Yes there are cheap alternatives, as with most products. I saw all those when I was doing my own research but could not find decent reviews or recommendations. They may or may not be as reliable as the Promatas, which came highly recommended from 4WD users who have run these for years. Buyer/user choice.

      • Thanks mate. Do you happen to have any links to reviews?

        • +2

No detailed reviews, primarily word of mouth and forum discussions. Most mention Safety Dave, Masten and Promata (and a few others) as very reliable units. Plenty of kms on rough roads etc with no failures. Promata is cheapest of all the better known products from my research.

Mine came in handy on a recent trip when I didn't screw one sensor on properly after airing up!! Long story, but basically IO error.

    • I don't know anything about these, but here's a cheaper Pixel

Can vouch for the eBay one, been working flawlessly for years, with the added benefit of a usb port as well. Not worth wasting extra cash on this.

      • Claims 3 yr warranty. Might try one for the Mrs' car.

How long do your sensors' batteries typically last?

    • I'm still waiting for my item to arrive after a month wait.

Yes I saw all those also thanks. They are NOT Promata, although they MAY have similar parts. Plenty of cheap knockoffs of all sorts of products on AliEx- including batteries, spark plugs, filters…..

Which do you recommend based on years of use?

  • The cheaper ones are shit for people who go off-road and air down frequently. They only have 1 low/high set points which you would set to road pressures. Then as soon as you air down it constantly beeps because it thinks your tires are too low, unless you stuff around with the annoying set points each time.

This one sounds like it has one button press to learn the base pressure and then warns when +/-25% difference. So after you air down, you would just press one button to reset the baseline pressure and again when you air up.

The only other similar one I know that caters for on and off road pressures is the iCheck TPMS (Melbourne based company) which I have but it is more expensive.

This one actually looks better/simpler to use. Very interesting. I’d be tempted to try if I didn’t already have the iCheck but I would prefer a solar powered dash unit rather than the cig plug one.

That's how it works timbo. Also less monitoring should mean longer battery life.

Yeah nah that's not how it works…
The sensors are triggered by movement so the only way you'll save battery is by not driving.

        • Yeah, the tire sensors are always transmitting their pressure when they are moving and go into sleep mode if they aren’t moving for a while. The receiver plugs into the cig socket so probably doesn’t have any battery.

What makes this one unique is that this receiver auto calculates the min/max set points from the current tire pressures when you press the reset button. Pretty clever and simple.

        • Possibly but science suggests the sensors of the pressure/temp device will be working harder hence using slightly more energy ALL the time they're working. Same scenario as computer chips - the more work, the more energy, the more heat generally speaking. The sensors in the cheapie might be more efficient but somehow I doubt that.

The batteries are in the sensors as you know. Most quote about 2 year life probably based on "average" mileage. Some offroaders doing much bigger distances have said their Promata batteries are still good after 3 years.

  • Seems they've withdrawn the deal. Based on the deal votes they must have been inundated with orders lol.
