431
THANKYOUPADRE10

Was looking at buying this kettle for black Friday.
I was tossing up between buying it from Padre and they sent me a generic code for an extra 10% off.
Seems like a pretty okay deal if you were going to buy anyway.

This is part of Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals for 2022

Great price on an amazing kettle.

I have this kettle and I love it for my coffee, but y'all should know how very very slow the flow rate is. Unless you're using it for pour-overs and such, then you're very likely to get frustrated making tea, cooking etc.

  • +4

Tbh this kettle looks good but I get frustrated by the impossibly slow flow rate which makes it impossible to use it as a general purpose kettle unless you take the lid off.

There’s also lots of other things which do the same thing with more versatility and mine hasn’t lasted as long as I would have liked. The temp sensor is a bit buggy and the display bugs a lot.

But it works - and I know lots of people who are happy with it. But just fyi fellow also released new kettles coming out in Aus probs early next year.

I think the whole point of the thing is you can max out the flow and it is extremely slow, rather than fighting to Goldilocks the flow between too slow and too fast.

This isn't meant to be a do-it-all kettle

    • +3

That's literally the point of a goose neck kettle - it's for filter coffee where a fast flow will ruin the distribution of the coffee bed. If you want a general purpose kettle then Fellow have the "Corvo" model.

    • +1

I use it as a daily kettle (as well as for pourover) and it is kind of annoying but oh well, not going to have 2x kettles on the counter.

    • +5

The slow flow rate is by design. These gooseneck kettles are designed for pourover style drink preparation.

The flow rate is designed for fine control.

I don’t think I made my point clear enough here.
I find the kettle is sometimes too slow for pour over coffee as well - and many other coffee professionals would agree with me. I often find myself wanting a faster flow rate to encourage more agitation in the bed.
Additionally, if you’re using it for other brew methods like tricolate, aeropress or clever, you find yourself wanting higher flow rates.
Additionally, this is exacerbated when you’re using a kettle as a kettle, like for tea or other kitchen purposes. Owning two kettles isn’t a solution for a lot of people.

I have used previous goosenecks in the past which allow you to pour equally as controlled but a bit faster as well which allows for more agitation. The main purpose of my comment was to highlight that if anyone wants to use this as a general purpose kettle or is concerned about slow flow rates, this isn’t the one for them - and to advise them about newer models (based on the same design).

    • There's an OXO gooseneck kettle that's "brewing" to take over with the enthusiasts. Heats up twice as fast, faster flow, just ugly as sin in comparison.

This beats the jacked sale from AB which is nice to see

  • qrd on this kettle?

    Quality is a problem.
The first kettle can't hold the temperature, because the switch at the back is not working.
I got a replacement kettle and used it for 1 year. The temperature sensor starts playing up. It shows 89 degrees when the water is boiling.
Now the temperature display is giving me random temperatures.

For this price, I expect the quality is at least better than a Breville kettle.
I wouldn't recommend this due to its build quality.

Someone needs to read the voting guidelines instead of getting butt hurt when their deal receives an appropriate neg…

    • That sounds rough. My one kettle has been great for about 3 years of almost daily use.

    • Yah there are certainly QC issues. I've got the infamous temperature knob problem - have to press multiple times to get the kettle switched on and off. Other than that, it's a great kettle for my Flair 58.

  • Thanks OP! I've had this in my cart a couple of times in the last fortnight over at AB…

    Great price.

I’ve had one for a few years - definitely not an all-purpose kettle - but if you’re into pourover brews or slow flow into an aeropress, or want a controlled pour for long blacks / americanos then this is a pleasure to use.

Note, there’s a new smart version that has just released but I’m not sure the features are worth the added price to upgrade for existing owners… but if you’re new in the market maybe also consider that too.

    • New EKG Pro not out in Australia till next year.

  • Is it super expensive due to the long thin snout ?

    • +2

      😂 “snout” - gooseneck.

You’re paying for design and PID control but also some specialty coffee tax. 😉

    • 🐽

    • I think the word you wanted was spout

For anyone interested in an alternative, the Bonavita one is $124.90 delivered at AB

Gives me the "form over function" vibes.

  • What's so special about this kettle to ask for this sort of price?? It boils water….. a pot can do that as well as a normal cheap kettle. Is it a made by Apple??

    • I don't get it either? Doesn't every Ozbargainer have a coffee machine which outputs hot water.

      • I remember a few years back there was a kitchen bin made by someone, had tons of upvotes too. Was over $350! I thought "the day my wife spends half a weeks wage on a bin will be the day i put her in it" and now a kettle, and there's been toasters around that price too. Some people can be so materialistic over a normal every day appliance, with a certain name tag on it, all for a fashion "look what i have" kind of thing and they're all made in China!

    • +2

It has very precise slow flow control and balance to be a pleasure to hold and use for the minutes it takes to brew coffee.

The temperature control is also very precise and easy to program, and holds/reheats to the target temperature when redocked.

      It also looks great!

That said I think this price should be RRP. Anything over is too much.

Good find OP. Been holding off on the AB deal for a while as their deal feels like a bit of a cop out.

  • +1

love this kettle. price is probably the best you'll get in this inflationary environment (pretty sure I got it for cheaper ~2 years ago)

Be warned that you have to descale it monthly and also that it can stay on warming for too long - so don't leave it on.

But the pour is perfect. I use a v60 and a chemex and a trinity one, aeropress and trinity zero. and it nails it every time no matter what.

I went full wank and got he wood handles for like 70 bucks extra. But the stock handles counter weight better. so I basically paid more for it to feel worse but look better on the shelf . so keep that in mind.

last point : i have never, ever played the easter egg game

  • Soo these are actually about. $150 on aliexpress for anyone that can actually wait for them to arrive.
