Apple MacBook Air 13", M1 16GB/1TB Gold $1897 + Delivery ($0 to Metro Areas) @ Officeworks

450

In parallel with the deal on the M1 Macbook Pro, the M1 Air is 300 cheaper. I've had both and found the Air to be a little more portable and comfortable. YMMV :)
For comparison, this is 500 cheaper than direct from Apple, and you get the 8-core GPU (instead of 7). Only available in Gold though. The M2 is a little bit faster and maybe better in other ways (Magsafe, a bit brighter), but if you need 16GB/1TB I think this is the best you can do from Apple right now (?)

Yeah I saw this too. Value is good but that colour…
I'd have to put a skin over it.

    • Well… yeah. Hopefully I'll get used to it!

    • Why not get the 8gb ram and spend about $350 on 2TB external storage? Will it not be cheaper?

I do imagine that 16gb may not be a huge boost as people using the Air are not going to be doing 'pro stuff witth the laptop anyways.

You hit the 8gb limit really quickly if you do anything other than light browsing. I'm still amazed how memory efficient Apple Silicon is, especially as devs had a bit of a kick in the pants to support arm64.

Honestly the Macbook Air M1 is probably one of the best laptops made so far. I also ended up putting a couple of thermal pads under the CPU and GPU which helps for heavier tasks (which is pretty rare). And I really dislike Apple.. but they won me across with the performance, battery, screen of the m1. Just wish their software was better.

The 2020 air is quite powerful, actually, it's easily suitable for "pro" work. For me the 16gb is for running virtual machines.
Re external storage, it's possible they fixed it but it used to be that performance with external drives was quite poor, unless you went Thunderbolt which costs a lot more. Plus the hassle and only two ports one of which you need for power. But the 8/256 is a nice machine too if that's all you need.

i've got the 8gb/256gb m1 air and i am constantly amazed at how beefy it is.

i've been abusing it by having 2-5 safari windows with 5-50 tabs open, QGIS, Spotify, MS remote, and football manager 2021 open on it pretty much 27/4 with few restarts or downtime, ever since i bought it.

it's madness how capable it is. it's only ever slowed down on me when i've realised it's trying to hold like, 10 youtube tabs open in various windows WHILST running football manager's match engine. my simple fix then is to quit and restart safari so that it no longer 'knows' about all those tabs it hasn't loaded yet lmao.

yes i am aware this is a maniacal way to use a computer. it's my workflow and it uh… 'works'… for me. sort of.

you should see my work pc.

You can always offload things to USB/network/cloud storage but when you spec a Macbook the ram is forever. If I was spending close to $2k on a machine you would hope it comes with 16GB minimum, 8GB doesn't cut it these days, especailly on a Mac with the high res screen the 4K+ highdpi assets for the apps will chew up your ram.

If I had to choose to save money I would pick 16gb/500gb over 8gb/1tb.

I have an 8GB M1 mini that always chokes with lots of tabs, RSS and Mail. My 16GB M1 Air is fine with a similar workload.

  • Where’s the M1 Pro deal?
