I've been looking for this new lens lately, not much stock around yet

RRP seems to be $249 and even grey import places either dont have stock or is at same price so picked it up straight away.

it is for VIP clubted members though which you need to join in store after your first purchase. but you will then get a $10 off $20 voucher in the mail as well.

Reviews have been positive for this lense, sharp and good price/build quality for the price.

hope you like it :)

Fantastic price. But personally, what's the point in sticking a compact lens onto a not-so-compact DSLR?

Not to rain on your post, I'm just curious. Why would one choose this lens over a nifty fifty?

    • if you see this on a slr body, it makes the whole thing so tiny,

Its got better bokeh than the 50 1.8 and better build quality
also atm, I don't have any of the 50's and find my other lenses are too heavy to bring around when casual shooting

i sold the 50 1.8 a while ago as i might get the 1.2 later,
also i didnt shoot 1.8 much as it was too narrow for casual shots

      • DWI is selling at $239.00 AUD, so this deal is pretty good. I have a friend who got this lense, it pretty good lense if you need it, but not for me. I imported the 50mm for less then $100, its cheap and VFM and so I dont see the need for the 40mm. I would rather spend more to get a 24mm but thats me.

      • What do you mean by better bokeh? Better quality?

F1.8 compared to F2.8 would give you a much shallower DOF, especially with the increased zoom?

        • +1

the 40mm has 8 blades compared to 5 of the 50mm 1.8 so the bokeh balls are much rounder and smoother
better build quality - metal mount, more solid body compared to plasticky feel of the 50mm 1.8

the 50mm 1.8 is still a great lens, esp its value.
this just provides people another option

        • Ah ok I got ya.

I have the Sigma 50mm F1.4 - apparently that has 9 blades, so would this 40mm be similar?

        • +1

          yep

if you have the sigma 50 1.4 dont think you would need this 40mm

    • So it can also be put on the new Canon mirrorless camera that will come out later this year.

      • the shorty forty is still an EF mount so if the mirrorless can use EF lenses, it should be able to use the 50 as well.

maybe it would take advantage of the STM motor in the 40 though

    • +1

It's sharper, focuses faster, better bokeh, better build quality, closer to what our eye sees (about 43mm) on full frame than a 50mm, lighter, smaller and more portable, and everyone who has one seems to love it!

      • Assuming you're using it on a FF camera… On a crop it'll be 64mm effective..

        • "(about 43mm) on full frame"

      • Sharper? Yet to be determined. I imagine that it is more than likely similar to the nifty.
        Better bokeh? Perhaps.
        Better build quality? Definitely.
Closer to what our eye sees? Irrelevant. You could need 40mm or 50mm, but one is not better than the other. In fact you could argue that as a portrait lens the nifty fifty is closer to what is required.
Lighter and smaller and more portable? Definitely.
Everyone seems to love it? Sure, at $200 it is a great buy, I would add that the nifty fifty got its name exactly because of that same reason.

    • This is one of the first lenses with STM.
STM is Canon's latest autofocus motor and it helps the latest batch of cameras (currently I think only the 650D has this) to achieve reasonably good continuous autofocus for DSLR videos.
At $200 it is a fantastic buy, particularly if you need that feature, but the nifty fifty is still better value IMHO.
I find the Nifty's bokeh to be really quite good, the picture quality is amazing and lets not forget that it opens up to 1.8, all for a hundred bucks.

  • anyone can find a good price for nikon 24-70?

    F2.8 ?????

    Yuck.

    • The lens is tiny so expecting F1.8 is going to be tough (esp. at this price). Don't forget, this is a 40mm, not a 50mm.

It has improved auto focus for video. Probably one of the best pancake lenses this year (these aren't common for DSLR).

      • What's with all the neg votes?

I just dont see the use of such crap on a good quality DSLR. You go to the expense of buying a camera that has the ability to have interchangable lenses, and then you put a tiny crappy little lens on it like this.

For a fixed lens, F2.8 is horrendous.
The Canon 50mm is F1.8, and considering you can pick that up for around $50 if you shop hard, this 40mm at a $200 'bargain price' is anything but.

I didnt neg the deal, but maybe I should have?

  • Good deal btw, grey import is a little bit more after you factor in shipping.

  • Great deal! Thanks OP!
