Very happy with my Charge 5. I’m not entirely sure how the durability would compare to a UE Boom with the Charge’s side woofers but the sound is pretty good and it doubles as a powerbank

    • +2

I've own the Megaboom 3 (which I returned because I didn't like the sound) and Charge 5. I use the Charge 5 like a worksite radio building my workshop out back - saw dust, brick dust, paint, wet mortar, accidently dropped, all sorts of abuse. I hose it off once in a while and still going strong. Megaboom felt flimsy in comparison.

      • I have a mega boom 3 and that feels like a brick.

The only part of the Charge 5 I was concerned about was if you got really unlucky and dropped it on a stick, I wonder if that would puncture the side woofer but I’m not going to be doing any testing of my own lol

        • Yeah, the sidewoofers are the only weak spot, but the rubber is pretty thick and it's reasonably protected.

What's your opinion of the sound quality of MB3 v JBL C5?

          • @rosebank: I really should do a side by side but off the top of my head the JBL. I use the mega boom in the shower in a holder made out of a hair dryer hanger and the JBL when I’m out at the basketball courts so hard to get a one to one comparison

    • Ditto to this comment. The sound is quite decent, I personally have found it enough even for small outdoor events, and it definitely fills a large room with sound easily. Also the battery seems to last quite a while from my personal use.

  • Already have a Charge 5, love the big sound. Night and day better than our old UE Boom 2.

Bought a couple of Flips as gifts, cheers OP

    • +7

Do you, like, need anymore friends to gift?
We could be just like that Placebo song:
      A friend in need's a friend indeed
A friend giving Flips 6 is better.

      I’ll see myself out…

  • Good price. Charge series has been solid so far

  • Clips on sale also. $47.50

  • Thanks OP! Great find, bought the Flip 6.

  • Which one is better for outdoors Flip6 or Charge 5

    • +1

Charge 5, it's like triple the size of my Flip 4. I don't think the Flip 6 would be much larger than the 4.

  • Bought the 6 cheers OP will make a good xmas present

  • +2

    Certified bargain

I got a Charge 5 a few months ago (mentioned it when another JBL product was highlighted on OZB back in October), I paid $159, $125 is an absolute steal. The speaker isn't small (yet it's not big either) but the sound is enormous. Can really irritate the neighbours lol.

  • +11

Perfect, needed this for my peak hour train commute

    • -1

Emergency flashmobs? Or sudden rick rolls? Because I usually find that headphones are enough.

      • +3

No, he means for some eshay n chill

  • Practically giving em away. Great price

  • +2

Worth updating from the Charge 2?

    • +1

I have a charge 2 as well. It’s been so good over the last six years. I’m going to keep using it till it dies. I don’t know what a charge 5 does over a 2?

      • +2

Better sound and battery life? But tbh mine still going strong so found it pretty hard to upgrade.

  • How do these compare to the Bose Soundlink Mini II SE.

There are internet reviews but re there any ob reviews?

    • +2

Better imo. All my Bluetooth speakers are JBL

  • Bought the charge 5 for $199. 2 days ago. Would they give me the price difference or would I need to buy and return the other one?

    • +1

If you go in-store they might be able to refund the difference

    • +6

Yes, if you go back within 2 weeks they are required to refund you the difference.

      Source: I've done it.

    • Just buy the same exact one, and take the unopened one back on the old receipt.

  • Also seems to be all-time low on JBL Clip 4 https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/jbl-clip-4-portable-bluet…

Bought one on Black Friday, will return and get a new one for this price! $42.84 with the coupon

  • Anyone able to recommend a portable speaker with aux input and usb-c charging?

  • Thoughts on which one to use in older car that has no BT options? Don't need audiophile quality but clear dialogue for audiobooks, podcasts etc.
Pity they dont have a mic for incoming calls etc.

    • +1

Would a Bluetooth receiver into your car's 3.5mm Aux jack be possible for you?

      • +1

$20 amazon adapter worked wonders for me

    • Look for a bluetooth FM transmitter. Sites in your 12v socket, connects to your phone via bluetooth, plays audio to your car via FM. Usually with buttons for play/pause/next/back, and USB sockets to charge your phone.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/tag/bluetooth-fm-transmitter

    • What year/make/model car? Reason I ask is there might even be cheaper options to get BT streaming/calls in the car.

      • Its for an 06 Subaru outback, no aux in unfortunately and no standard din to swap out the head unit. Its basically a backup car so not frequently used or worth spending $ on. I've used the BT to FM transmitters in the past and found them problematic but yeah maybe I should have another look at options.

        • +1

Ah damn, yes no standard DIN.There are fascia kits available for the upper section between the vents, but that won't be economical.

How good's your soldering skills? There's a YT video of a guy adding an aux-in to an Outback (or Liberty/Legacy).

  • flip vs Bose soundlink flex v wonderboom 3. Who wins?

    • +1

I was heavily considering Wonderboom 3, but it didn't impress me, and it's still got micro USB charging in 2022…

      • I am thinking wonderdoom too and Just travel with a 3 in 1 cable

  • +2

Amazon seem to be price matching JB on the jbl range but without the extra 10%. Still could be worthwhile if you buy one of the cheaper ones and want it shipped for free (if you’re a prime member)

  • Thanks OP, was waiting for the charge 5 to go on sale

  • I bought the flip 6 at officeworks for $127 a few weeks ago. Anyone know if they’ll easily refund the difference, or do i need to return and new pricematch?

  • damn that's better than the blackfriday deal from Amazon

    • +3

      Prob fake

    • +2

This one is clearly fake. Genuine came with orange cable

      • Ooh ok, thanks for the info!

        • +2

Just be careful as there are lots of fake JBL out there

      • I picked up the Flip 6 from JB today and it has a black cable. cc @Peteroz

        • Oh they might have change it for this. But ebay listing the color is off, especially the camo version

  • +2

Just bought the JBL Xtreme 3 for $188.37 post 10% discount. Probably overkill compared to the Charge 5 unless you want to have a party every weekend, but I couldn't help myself. Seems to be ATL for the Xtreme 3.

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/jbl-xtreme-3-portable-blu…

    • Great deal. You will not regret, as long as it does not need to be carried around too long.

I have one of each, assuming they would pair up and play in stereo.

They can both play simultaniously, but to play in stereo they need to be same speakers, so I ordered

another charge 5 at this great price. The Extreme has deeper and louder bass, but I need portability too.

  • I have been looking at the edifier options for listening to music in my home office, which is a largish space but also has my gym.

Normally using headphones but nice to sometimes do not have to, thoughts on this vs edifier or similar options?

  • Thanks. Needed a Bluetooth speaker. Watched lots of comparison vids and although the charge is better at high volumes apparently the flip is better at low volumes which is perfect for me. Got a flip. 🤙

  • +3

Thanks. Thought I needed AUX because my projector doesn’t have bluetooth. Realised I can connect bluetooth speakers directly to the Chromecast. Just bought the Charge 5 for outdoor movie nights. Extra 15% off with Ultimate cards from Coles converted to JB gift cards, so $106.56

    • +1

The JBL range is very good audio wise especially for music. However, I can't fix the bluetooth delay issues for movies which seems to be a common problem for most Bluetooth speakers.

      • +1

Thanks, I'll see how I go. If it doesn't work out I'll just have to blast my music.

        • There is a sound delay feature on sound bars but I can't find the same feature on Bluetooth speakers. It gets annoying when their mouths move first and the sound comes a second or two later. It's like those 1980s kung fu movies with the english dub lol

          • +1

@cynical17: The issue is Bluetooth has an average processing delay of 200ms - it varies greatly between device to device, including being dependant on the source and device itself. But 200ms is about the average.

To fix the lip sync issue you'd need to somehow delay your video source (TV, projector or whatever it is)
This is quite rare in these devices and often the delay setting is for the audio which isn't going to help you in this case…

This is because usually the video is the longest thing to process, so delaying the audio output helps sync it up.

So ultimately unless you can delay your video to match the lengthy bluetooth delay you're out of luck using bluetooth devices…
A 'hack' might be to enable more video options on your TV to process the video, as this adds more processing delay, however we usually turn stuff off for a better picture (and lower input lag) :D

          • +1

@cynical17: My Chromecast (4k with TV) with Charge 5 seems to be going well. It could well be out by up to the average of 200ms mentioned by chickendog, but at a guess it's less than that.

I did have the effect mentioned when I tried to pair a projector with a different bluetooth speaker, I would guess it was out by 1-2secs and it was difficult to watch. This isn't noticeable to me and when I was watching carefully it seemed near spot on. I'm pretty happy with it, so I'll stick with the Charge 5.

    • @ Miss B How did you covert UGC to JB GC?

      • Short version: I bought JB gift cards on the JB website

        Long version

        • Thanks, read some comments saying only one is allowed, even wookimonster confirmed it.

          • @deals4amar: Yeah, I saw that, which is why I tried to be sneaky with my second one, but was able to do 5 all on the same account without any issues. Just the one where I tried to be sneaky didn't work.

    • +1

FWIW the charge 4 has aux

      • The Charge Essential also has it. That one is available as part of this. Xtreme 3 seems to as well, but a bit more expensive. Wondering if I should get one of them instead.

        • Go the extreme, love mine, a well behaved beast.

  • Thanks so much, great price! I would've been happy picking up the previous model flip for $80 so this is a real win

  • +1

How did you get Flip 6 $80.37 Delivered (RRP $169), delivery isn't free, so I did a C&C.

  • Don't forget to combine it with the Commbank rewards offer, if you are targeted and haven't used it yet. Mine ends today.

Charge 5 going for $117.99 on ebay plus $2.99 Postage. just slightly cheaper

    • +2

FYI that’s fake, it’s an unbranded rip off.

      • +3

i just noticed the author joined less than 2 months ago and this is their only post. I wonder if they are the seller!

      • Good to know ppl's thought. Yes, I've recent just joined and it is my first post but i am not the seller. I was just googling the JBL speaker and came across this ebay ad. Everyone else as 'doweyy' stated the ebay item can be fake, please stay away and since the price difference is not much from JB. It would be wise to go to JB HIFI for warranty etc. Cheers

    • +3

Nothing about that one looks genuine. Stock photos from online, most positive ratings are on other sales, and there are multiple ones saying some of the JBL and other electronic products are fake.

  • Finally a sale for the flip 6. Needed something small to bring around overseas.

  • Which one of the 2 is lighter, for travelling purposes?

    • +2

      The Flip 6 is lighter

  • Flip 6 and the charge 5 same sort of size?

    • No mate, Charge is almost twice the size and weight of the Flip. It's a more powerful speaker.

  • Charge 5 Black 404 on JB's site, Ozbargained?

    • +1

I got the blue because black wasn't available at my local, and I quite like the colour.

  • Thanks, grabbed a blue charge 5. Note: Thomastown store had no black available for click and collect but had plenty of stock in store when I went in to pickup my online order today.

  • Sad I missed this
