FYI everyone this isn't USB C

    • +8

It is, just picked up from JB. I'm using it right this second

      • +4

I think they mean USB-C to USB-C which would be quicker than the USB-A to USB-C provided but thanks for clarifying, tempted to get one!

        • +2

Yea that was actually quite a useful bit of info thanks SpeedRunnerLink. Not sure why the negs. USB-C to USB-C is super helpful for those of us who use USB-C for everything. Thanks.

          • +11

@ritzaus: I'm using my own USB-C to USB-C cable. It works great with this connecting to my Surface. You don't have to use the supplied USB-C to USB-A cable.

            • @eddieaus: Ohh thank you…so it does have a USB-C port as well? Nice. Thanks!

              • +1

@ritzaus: It only has a usb-c port, the cable comes with an adapter to convert the other usb-c end to a usb-a for required devices.

            • @eddieaus: Oh cool, that's good info!

  • Bought one; thanks OP!

    • +1

This is only 520mb/s max. The new model is 1060mb/s (double) but also double the price.

  • +2

Good price, wish I could justify one

  • Does anyone know if this would work as an external storage with an Xbox one?

    • Yes, with a different cable if it’s USB C.

      • +2

looking at the pictures I think the SSD accepts a USB-C but has a USB-C to USB-A cable, should be right. I'll give it a whirl.

      • The older model of these drives had a removable A plug with a C plug inside – you can use the one cable for either port type

  • Thanks OP, got one.

  • +4

can this be used for Tesla to store dashcam footage are are there any cheaper options

    • +16

Tesla and cheap don't go hand in hand mate

      • +18

Unless you're talking about build quality.

        • +3

it's cheaper for sure but is it as good? only time will tell

      • -3

Well it depends on how we perceive value, I justified the value of Tesla purely for it Full self driving capability which is ahead of any car manufacturer readily available and if Elon is able launch robo taxi as promised then the car can pay off itself.
I didn't want to spend more on a piece of hardware that sits inside the glove box all the time so thinking whether I should get it or nah

        • +1

They don't have LIDAR, so it'll either never work, or when the real car manufacturers get involved they'll simply lobby to make non-lidar cars illegal. Watch.

In the meantime just remember : You're having to upgrade recording storage because Tesla couldn't throw you a $80 buck bone.

            They don't have LIDAR

They're bringing radar back. They really should have all three - vision, radar, lidar. That'll give it better abilities than a human who can't see through rain, fog, and darkness.

That said, their camera-only self driving is pretty impressive.

You're having to upgrade recording storage because Tesla couldn't throw you a $80 buck bone.

How much storage do other car manufacturers provide?

            • @eug: God musk spews constant horse shit. Add the smallest amount of fog and get back to me about how good vision systems are.

              • @[Deactivated]: People always doubt him and look where he is now.

They ridiculed him that Electric cars will never replace petrol but it's moving in that direct now.

                • @SpeedRunnerLink: 3.4 percent of new car sales, not all cars, just NEW car sales are electric.

A smaller and smaller fraction of those are Teslas.

In the meantime, yeah, look where he is now. Go and check teslas share price, and then calm down.

He was fired from PayPal and didn't found Tesla. Sure did sue the founders for the right to call himself one though.

3.4 percent of new car sales, not all cars, just NEW car sales are electric.

There was a time when all car sales was just 3.4 percent of all vehicle sales, with the rest being horses and buggys.

I don't think anyone can deny Tesla iPhoned the electric car industry. In the early 2010s before Tesla there were Nokia cars like the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, Smart EQ,Volvo C30, Ford Focus. They all had poor ~100km range with tiny batteries and lacklustre performance so weren't very exciting for consumers.

Then the Model S came into the picture in 2012. The performance was similar to a BMW M5 and CLS63 AMG, and the ~420km range made it more practical for more people. Suddenly electric cars weren't just a dinky little thing at the bottom of the market with limited appeal - they could now challenge the luxury car market. It stayed that way for years while the traditional car manufacturers, caught with their pants down, had to play catch-up.

If Elon didn't do it someone else might have eventually done it. But as weird as he is, the fact is he is the one who did it. It's just a pity he seems a little off the rails too, but maybe it takes that kind of person to do it in the first place.

                    • +1

@eug: Tesla's have literally never been a luxury car. They are poorly constructed dogboxes, from a car manufacturing point of view.

The manufacturers were waiting for the technology to Mature, and industry to be available to support it. Tesla jumped early, and their products didn't meet the standards of the majors. Like most things Elon, they weren't first, they weren't best, they were simply the loudest. Tesla itself would have been a catastrophic failure if not for almost limitless government subsidies/credits in the USA.

Now that the majors are happy to pull the trigger, Tesla's completely (profanity). People are already selling them to upgrade to marque brands. Who, by the way, have literally billions in R&D budgets per year (go and check financials), that haven't been sitting idle.

In 10 years the only thing left of them might be their battery factories, if they were smart enough to spin them off from the main company with their own assets.

Tesla's have literally never been a luxury car.

In your opinion, sure. Plenty of other people have a different opinion to you though.

The manufacturers were waiting for the technology to Mature,

That's like saying Nokia was waiting for technology to mature. The technology was there, they just didn't have a big enough reason to rock the boat.

Tesla didn't invent 18650 batteries or motors. In 2012 there were other electric cars too, the difference is that traditional car manufacturers had little motivation in developing electric cars at the time.

and industry to be available to support it.

Tesla created their own supercharger network. They didn't wait for the industry to agree on standards - they just went out and did it because they were the first.

Like most things Elon, they weren't first, they weren't best, they were simply the loudest.

What commercially-available Model S-like car was there before the Model S?

People are already selling them to upgrade to marque brands.

What is your source on this?

Who, by the way, have literally billions in R&D budgets per year (go and check financials), that haven't been sitting idle.

It has been 10 years since Tesla came out with the Model S. It's amusing that it has taken billions of dollars every year for about a decade to finally get to the point where they can compete with Tesla.

You're clearly anti-Elon and anti-Tesla. That's fine; I don't care about either one of them either - but you absolutely cannot deny the fact that Elon and Tesla single-handedly kick-started the EV market just like how the iPhone kick-started the smartphone revolution. If they didn't do it someone else probably would - but the fact remains - Elon and Tesla are absolutely the ones that made it happen. What happens to them after is completely irrelevant - it doesn't change the past.

                        • +1

@eug: Tesla aren't iPhone. They're the shitty capacitive nokia touch screen phones that came before the good products.

Literally any of the majors are bringing iPhone's out. But they aren't stupid enough to do it before the infrastructure was there, the tech was feasible, and grids could cope.

  • Can this be used to store the footage from Blue Iris? My PC HDD is only 128 GB and hence thinking to buy this to expand the storage?

    • It’s no different than any other external SSD/HDD. You need to research if Blue Iris, what ever that is, supports external drives.

  • Would this work with a PS5?

    • Yes but will only be able to play PS4 games and apps.

      • Oh really, damn thought that was only if it was HDD. Cheers for the info

        • +1

What you would need for PS5 games is a PCIe 4.0 NVME drive with at least 5000MB/s read speeds.

          For example https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/745195

          • @enaz: Cheers atm I think this will do until I can afford a decent internal SSD. Its still better than redownloading the games and I still play a lot of PS4 games on it anyway.

  • Good to be used as time machine for Mac?

    • +1

You'll need to format the disk to Mac OS Extended by using disk utility. This drive defaults to exFAT.

  • Better or worse than T7/T7 shield?

    • +5

Far far far worse. This is the el cheapo version from WD/Sandisk line.

  • Would this work with S22U OTG?

    • uses exfat which is supported by samsung phones/tablets, so yes. I have an exfat portable ssd and it works fine with my Galaxy Tab S6.

  • Is this a good sdd for holding games? Will it have decent load times?

    • Compare the read speed to other drives you’re considering.

    • +1

      For PC games,yes.

  • +2

Apparently these have been revised to be less shuckable. Glued drive, case hard to non-destructively disassemble.

From the sounds of it, people were returning empty cases. That's not nice kids.

  • So can this use usb c to usb c cable?

    • +1

This one has a usb c input. So it should work if you have spare cable

    • Can we add one more $10 member perks when check out in store?

      • +2

If your associated with JBs, wouldn’t you know this?

  • Curious to know why this is so much cheaper compared to the samsung t7? Is there a big speed difference? Just want to use this for a long term backup.

    • SSDs not ideal for backup drives

      • Want something that i can store for 10 years without worrying that things will break.

        • Yeah you’re much better off with a platter drive

          • @0jay: A bit hesitant given the lifespan is 3 to 5 years

            • @overule: There are enterprise grade drives but lifespan estimates are around spinning drives ie in use as distinct from sitting in a safe or whatever.

I’m not up to date on the reasons SSDs are problematic for storage, it’s possible some are available now that address those historical issues but if your data is important to you I would look into it further.

    • +5

I have both. From my test, T7 has twice the writing speed (360MB/s) vs E30's 180MB/s.
T7 has aluminum casing. E30 has plastic casing.
      T7 comes with 2 cables, USB-C to C, and USB-C to A. E30 comes with one cable USB-C to A.

      • Thanks. Couldn't find any benchmarks on the E30.
