5% discount is a good thing, plus everything should be automated and easy, I used the discounted eEbay cards with no problems.

However if you ever need to contact Blackhawk Networks (the provider of these and all the Ultimate Gift Cards) do not expect anything that resembles help, support or assistance.
The service provided via their telephone 'support' line is worse than any other than I can ever recall. (Others here have also described their support as abysmal).

Hi Wolfy, sorry to read this. We have been working really hard to improve our customer service processes and continue to do so, hopefully you will not have the same issues should you need to contact us again. Also you are welcome to message me and I will try my best to get you the help you need! Warm regards, Austin Black

The comment above is based on my experience calling BHN telephone support - 3 times - in the last 2 days.
I outlined those experiences here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/744157#comment-13114211
I actually can't imagine what your customer service processes were like previously if you've made improvements to them recently.
However, I will contact you with the name of the BHN Supervisor I spoke to earlier today and my personal email so you can track the details.

        • +1

Hi Wolfy, I am really sorry to hear this. I have replied to your message and have escalated your case.

          • @AustinBlack: Hi @AustinBlack, I have reached out to you regarding an BHN issue I am facing. Have contacted telephone support with no resolution so far. Hope you're in a position to help. Cheers

          • @AustinBlack: Sorry is nice, but it does nothing to resolve the situation.

It's been another two days since you 'escalated' the case but BHN Support have not even contacted me to acknowledge the concerns raised, let alone propose a solution.

While I understand that you are "not in the customer service team so can't directly help" making promises here that your Support Team are unable to keep just makes the situation even more frustrating.

Personally I have now resolved the situation via another avenue but the abysmal experience with your BHN Support means that I will be very hesitant about any Blackhawk Network product or deal in the future.

            • @Wolfy: Hi Wolfy, I was advised it was resolved by the retailer you purchased at? If that is incorrect please let me know.

        • Also had a problem with an ecard recently. Code wasn't recognised at Anaconda - they tried a couple of different options which failed - so contacted BH help on the phone as I sat outside the store 25km away from my residence. Essentially support (nice fella) wasn't able to see the actual card info to help so I had no remedy.

When I got home I emailed them and complained. Solution was to use https://exchangeyourcard.com.au to get an actual Anaconda egift card which I did. To say I was unimpressed by the experience is a gross understatement.

You made a giant mistake by purchasing the wrong gift cards to begin with. I'm surprised that Blackhawk support would even look into it. Also claims against ACCC and chargeback? Wow, you really don't sound like the type of person who takes charge of their own actions.
Good luck anyways, I feel your hurt still.

      • +3

I think that is a little harsh and I would ask you to reconsider your comment, because I would not really blame the commenter for this messy situation.

There are two separate Ultimate gift card websites:

The EFTPOS versions of the Ultimate gift cards have the following URL printed on the packaging:

        www.ultimategiftcards.com.au

The reason is that the EFTPOS version website previously used the URL now used by the Visa version website. EFTPOS versions of the Ultimate gift cards stopped being manufactured before the EFTPOS version website URL changed, but when the Visa version of the Ultimate gift cards was first launched, the existing website for the EFTPOS version had its URL changed to what it is now.

After the EFTPOS version was moved to gift.ultimategiftcards.com.au, there was a pop-up on the screen when you landed on www.ultimategiftcards.com.au website, asking you for the gift card’s BIN (i.e. the first six digits of the card number). If you entered 502125 (which is used by the EFTPOS version), it would bump you to the website for the EFTPOS version. The pop-up was removed sometime later and replaced with a black banner along the top of the homepage saying that if you had an Ultimate gift card starting with 502125, you would need to go to a separate website.

However, the black banner was later changed to notify users of an issue with the Add To Wallet feature on MyPrepaidCentre, so for a period of time, there was nothing on www.ultimategiftcards.com.au to indicate that the EFTPOS versions of the Ultimate gift cards were actually on a separate website. If you were standing at Coles last Wednesday morning and looked at back of an EFTPOS version of the Ultimate Him gift card and punched in www.ultimategiftcards.com.au into a web browser, you would have seen the Visa version website with a larger list of participating retailers and there would be nothing to indicate you were looking at the wrong website.

This was rectified by Blackhawk Network about a day after this forum post, where they did two things:

        • Had an image on the front page saying that if you had an Ultimate gift card starting with 502125, click on the image to take you to gift.ultimategiftcards.com.au

        • Brought back the pop-up asking you to input the BIN for the Ultimate gift card you have.

Having said all of that, if you go to the EFTPOS version website right now, go to the FAQ page and expand Where can I use my card?, it tells you to check the Visa version website for the most up to date list of participating retailers!

Mate you have done an excellent job explaining and clarifying everything numerous times. Whose fault is it to buy the wrong gift card? The person who paid for it of course. I feel sorry for the person but how is it the vendors fault if the customer has purchased the wrong variant of the card? I hope they help but if I was threatened with charge back I'd be a pretty peeved off support rep and tell them to bugger off. Being polite and requesting assistance is a better way forward, whether it works or not.

It is also made very clear that people double check before they buy gift cards in general because they are almost never refundable.

          • @thousandsuns: WookieMonster's information and the Gift Card FAQ is amazingly useful.
However some of the information there has only recently been updated and without the very specific details, the 'new' and 'old' gift cards look virtually identical when you are in-store. The updated FAQ now has useful detailed information about how to differentiate between the two types for anyone looking to make a purchase in the future.

            @thousandsuns:

Whose fault is it to buy the wrong gift card? The person who paid for it of course.

I would argue that is a very narrow way of viewing the situation, because you are essentially saying that Blackhawk Network is blameless and can get away with screwing customers over.

If we want to assign blame, it would be shared between:

            • The purchaser - the purchaser obviously did not dig deep enough into this area. However, if it was a percentage out of 100% of blame, it would be very small, because how on earth is the purchaser supposed to know where to dig if the packaging told them to go to a specific website for details and terms and conditions of the gift card, even though it was actually the wrong website all along and there was nothing on that website to help redirect them?

            • Blackhawk Network - Blackhawk Network were the ones who made the choice to use an existing URL for their new product, and created a new URL for the existing product. They also chose not recall the EFTPOS versions of the Ultimate gift cards once the Visa versions were released (which is what Apple did with the old App Store & iTunes gift cards when they launched the Apple gift cards in July 2021). They also removed the controls they had to mitigate the risk of someone with an EFTPOS version going to the Visa version website and being tricked into thinking their gift card now had a lot more participating retailers.

            • Me - I did not get around to updating the FAQ with a question that was literally asked frequently until a number of people got caught out and posted about it here, even though I have known about this issue since the Visa version was introduced around September 2021. I’m more than happy to take responsibility for the (admittedly small) role I played in this mess. Although I did post a warning, it was buried in the comments section, out of sight for a lot of people.

If we think of this in terms of airline crashes… Imagine if a pilot was incorrectly trained by an airline in reacting to a stall warning (i.e. the plane is about to fall out of the sky) and they did not react correctly and eventually led to the plane crashing. By your view of the world, you would only blame the pilot, because they made the mistake. However, it does not go to the root cause, which is the fact that the airline trained the pilot incorrectly in the first place, which misled the pilot into reacting to a stall situation the wrong way. You could go a layer deeper to see who or what caused the wrong training in the first place, but you get the idea. Hopefully.

It is also made very clear that people double check before they buy gift cards in general because they are almost never refundable.

You do realise the two problems with that statement, right?

How were you supposed to double check the gift cards?

Punching in the URL on the back of the gift card packaging for the EFTPOS version took you to the wrong website. The packaging also tells you to go to the URL on the packaging

There was nothing on that website until a few days ago to warn you on that you were on the wrong website for the EFTPOS version.

You could search “Ultimate Him gift card” in Google, but the first result leads to the Visa version of the Ultimate Him gift card, and there is nothing on that website to indicate you are looking at the Visa version, not the EFTPOS version. The pop-up that asks you for the gift card BIN does not appear unless you go to the homepage.

If you went to the second result of the aforementioned Google search, it leads you to the correct webpage. Well, I know it is the correct page, but it does not mention anything about specifically being for the EFTPOS version unless you go to the terms and conditions page by clicking on the T&Cs button. Even if you do that though, the terms and conditions literally say the following above clause 1:

For a full and updated list of participating partners please visit our website www.ultimategiftcards.com.au.

… which of course is the URL for the Visa version.

@WookieMonster: Mate perhaps I have been around long enough and have purchased plenty of these cards to know which ones are the right ones. Always when buying a bulk amount of anything, I always do my research. I have been on these forums day in and out and I understand that people can make mistakes but I believe majority here did their fair part to ensure they secured the right cards. In my view I do not think it warrants a legitimate chargeback. In most cases being patient will result in the vendor refunding cards anyways since they are unused.

I however get your point and the amount of patience and effort you have shown in the forum is excellent. I suppose my view is just different but all good.

Thanks for posting the deal and previous ones. I have always managed to secure the necessary amount of cards during the promo!

  • Oh my days. Sofitel is on it

  • Perfect for new content in the forum's.

      just buy em now lol

      • Well I'd prefer to know I've won the auctions first lol. Around $1K of stuff so don't really want to have that much sitting on gift cards without a use straight away. Be good if the deal went a bit longer though.

        • +1

i suppose so but there is always stuff to buy on ebay and long expiry its not too big of a hassle

    • the end date revised to 18th

  • some hard to pay … seems all virtual cards are not accepted
    * zip one-off visa not accepted
    * coles mastercard not accepted
    * I used bundll to buy ebay cards 2days ago that was fine, but today failed

As warning to others, don't buy anything from giftz.com.au with a commonwealth card. It will be considered as cash advance and they will charge 3% fee (min $3) + high interest.
You won't see it immediately but only a few days after the transaction.
I just opened a dispute, and they say too bad we can't reverse the fee as the T&Cs indicates gift cards are considered as cash advance.

    • Yes will never buy again.

      • Also with commonwealth, or did you use CC from another bank?

        • I am also CBA. This is crap as I am not aware buying a gift card is going to use cash advanced due to I bought many gift cards before from other web sites and they are fine.

          • +1

            @test123123: I agree with you. It's BS.
Bought multiple gift cards in the past, it should be clear when they will and won't charge this fee. I'm super annoyed by this.

    • How is that possible? Are they putting credit cards through as a cash payment instead of a credit payment?

Is this happening with all credit cards?

      • I got the following response:

An online purchase can still be considered a cash advance when the payment being used to load money to a 3rd party such as for a transfer or the purchasing of Gift Cards.

        • +1

Very strange! I've been purchasing things online (including gift cards) using credit cards for 20 years now and have not once had a purchase go through as a cash advance. Seems sus.

Would this be Giftz.com.au putting them through as cash sales? or something on Commonwealth Banks end?

      • mine paid by 3 non-COMM cards, didn't see charged as cash advance so far.

        • +2

Possible, I'm just warning others with CBA cards.
It's just very disappointing to see it's considered cash advance. If gift cards is considered, they should add it in the T&C's explicitly.

    • +2

Outrageous! I just discovered the fees on my statement and checked OB to see if anyone else was hit. I'll open a dispute with CBA but doesn't look promising.

Hi Johnmelb, this is very strange and I would like to investigate this. I will send you a private message to discuss further. Thank you for letting us know this is happening.

    • +1

CBA refunded me in full. I opened a case in the app. They said refund was a gesture of goodwill and may not be able to refund similar charges in the future.

  • This is bad. As I bought gift card from other places and they do not charge cash advance fee. I did not know they charged cash advanced fee and bought Amazon gift card. The saving is like 2%. Will never buy again.

    • Hi Test123123, as I mentioned to Johnmelb above, this is very strange and I would like to investigate this. I will send you a private message to discuss further. Thank you for letting us know this is happening.
