    That's a great price

Have you seen the gift cards available anywhere in Woolworths?

    • +2

Sightings are as rare as Tassie Tigers 😉 All recent 10% GC promotions at WW, it was impossible for me to find any at multiple Shopping centres I went to. Asked the staff, was told they sold out with no idea if they will get restocked. As soon as promotions ended, they magically reappeared LOL.
You would have a lot more chances by price matching @ Sony store and wait for CR 12% cash back which happened several times this year, stack with Amex/Sony cash back offers.

      • exactly my thoughts, the $2672.19 is with the "mythical" Woolies gift cards…

      • Great idea!
Not in a rush to get one so just got Sony to price match it and is sitting in my cart.

    • Had plenty of $100 Him cards on wednesday evening (barkly sq). Not sure if its still available. But, havent seen any $500 GCs.

  • whats the best all around lens for this?

    • The Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 is a solid all-rounder. Tamron makes a similar lens that's lighter but doesn't go as wide and is slightly lower quality while Sony themselves make an extra heavy and more expensive, but arguably no-better 24-70.

      • +3

You seem to be describing the GM V1, the GM V2 is a big improvement over the V1 in basically every way. That being said there are diminishing returns, paying a lot of extra money for that small edge over the Sigma/Tamron.

    • Honestly I reckon it depends on what you shoot. A 24-70 is a good option but depending what you shoot more I think an argument could be made for a 35mm prime (in terms of price, size and bokeh/large aperture).

    • +1

You would only need Sony 24-70 f2.8 GMII (from personal experience).
Got myself A7iv and this lens a couple of months ago. Definitely not the cheapest/best value lens, but after using it, can't complain and couldn't be happier and forgot how expensive it was compared to the third-party ones.

      • didnt realise its more expensive than the body😄

        • Lol, in this case it is.
Paid $3150 for the camera in September and thought it was a good deal.

        • +2

The thing is you can have 10 lenses for a single body so the lenses quickly get more expensive than the body.

The good thing is though a good lens will depreciate much less than a body so as long as it's in good condition, you can buy/sell lenses.

          • @dust: Buy once, cry once.

Camera bodies may change hands but lens last longer. At one point I was using a 20-30 something year old Minolta Beercan with autofocus on a Sony DSLT camera body.

If the lens is really good, resale prices can maintain close to purchase price or if you can snag it at a big enough discount it may even increase. This usually applies more so to in demand first party lens than third party.

I would suggest a few depending on your liking,

Tamron 20-40 mm F2.8 (if you're more into wide angle)
Tamron 28-70 mm F2.8 mark ii (middle ground)
Sigma 24-70 mm F2.8 (middle ground but heavier and a tad more expensive, better build than Tamron but picture quality would be pretty similar)
Tamron 28-200 mm F2.8-5.6 (if you like super zooming without sacrificing too much on picture quality)

There are so many primes as well depending on your preferred focal length, top of my list (light/portable, affordable but without sacrificing too much on optical quality)
      Samyang 24 mm F1.8
      Samyang 45 mm F1.8
      Sony 35 mm F1.8
      Sony Zeiss 55 mm F1.8
      Sony 85 mm F1.8

All above are pretty sharp and produces really nice bokeh balls..

      Surprised no one's mentioned.the Sony g 24-104 f4

      • +1

yep that's the centerpiece of my kit. very solid and dependable lens for travel and whatever else life throws at you. it can get anything done well enough

when I want dramatic portraits with dreamy bokeh I switch to Sony 85 1.8. cheap, solid, and fantastic IQ. best portraits ever, and doesn't weigh you down like 85/1.4 or 135/1.8 would

when I want to travel light, I take Sony 40/2.5G. amazing IQ, light and built like tank (however that doesn't compare to Fujifilm WR primes, those can take some beating and I shot Fujifilm setup in pouring rain, no issues, with Sony I wouldn't dare). has great bokeh wide open for nice portraits (tight enough for great head and shoulders or from waist up), or stop down to 5.6 - 8 for fantastic daytime atmospheric shots.

      • Exactly. Its one of the sharpest lens I have used and so versatile.

      • I had 24-105 and compared that with my Tamron 28-200 before I ended up selling the Sony. They both were equally sharp (at 28 Tamron was sharper also F2.8 too, but Sony closed in by 50 mm, though Tamron held up strong all the way to 70 mm where they both were around F4. Then Sony takes the lead -albeit slightly - up to 105. Obviously Tamron goes all the way to 200 mm (still decently sharp). I sold Sony mainly due to dull colours it produced (Tamron colours are nice and contrasting). Also Sony doesn't have great close focus distance hence Tamron almost always had better bokeh even at 105 mm. Sony doesn't have F2.8 either, therefore can't beat Tamron at low light.
Basically Tamron is sharper, lighter, had better colours and contrast, cheaper, better range and F2.8 so for me Sony had no appeal. 24 mm wide end is the only thing I miss about that lens.

    • Another vote for the tamron 28-75mm 2.8 g2. Value wise and ergonomics is bang on. Optically great and not a heavy beast like the sigma. Half the price of Sonys 24-70 v2.

Can’t beat it really. Love using it for video work as well.

Agree the Sony 24-70 f2.8 GMII would be a good choice.

Looks like at JB you can get further 15% for Sony lenses if you buy a Sony camera, which makes the deal even sweeter.

But can't find the Sony 24-70 f2.8 GMII on their website or the 70-200mm GMII.

How long is a piece of string?

I've been happy with the FE 24-105mm f4 G OSS. Compared to the 24-70 f2.8 I would prefer the extra reach and if I was shooting in low light I'd just bump the ISO up.

      That said, I wouldn't mind a prime like the 24mm f1.4.

      • "just bump the ISO up" 😂

        • +1

          Am I wrong?

          • @sickburn: Nope. Can definitely do that if don't care about the noise from high ISO.

  • There was plenty of gift cards at Merrylands in Sydney last night!

    Literally heaps…

WIth Coles giftcard, can down to 2524.5

    • question again. How can I use this code in-store? Show the code to the staff and get a printed price to check out?

      • I think it's best to do a click & collect, so you can use the coupon and the gift cards

      • Just go the cashier, show the cashier the code. The cashier will apply the code for you.

    • Aren't those limited to $200 per card, with the current Coles deal being a max of 5 cards? If you combine the Coles and Woolies deals it only takes it down to $2623.

  • +1

To me, making big purchases using gift cards is a dumb move, because you can only get back the money in the form of store credit or gift cards which strictly limits how you can use that money should you return the item. Unless you are certain you won't run into issues that require a return, but who can say that for sure?

    • If you can save $400, why not

      • It's a balance and depends on what you can accept. But consider the scenario you end up with $2900 worth of gift cards when you can put that money to better use.

Question: can we use multiple gift cards on JB website?

    • +1

      It's just a question gottadeal

  • What's the cheapest sigma 24-70, you could get atm?

    • +1

Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 is $1420 if you have ebay plus from DCXpert :)

  • I think I will skip again as it does do high frame rate at 4K

  • This or a near new A7 III with a 50mm 1.4 GM lens for $3000?

    • If you mainly shoot photos the A7III is almost as good as the IV so depends on what you shoot.

Personally I don't use the 50mm focal length that much though but I suppose you can flog it for another lens you might use more.

    • The 50mm GM is F1.2? The 1.4 is a Zeiss. If it was actually the GM it would be a no brainer to just buy it and sell off whatever you didn't need.

    • $3k isn't really "cheap/bargain". I'd not recommend spending that amount on 5 years old tech. Spend a little extra on the newer model and you'll be set for at least next 5-7 years.

      • The dude just kept saying that it wasn’t Wednesday 😂

        • Sorry to hear that mate, i've dealt with some weird guys at jb as well. Some of them have no idea what they are doing.

    • +1

Try a different store mate. They have a 10 gift card limit . But thats all the limit they should have.

    • Try buying online and click & collect!

      • Can you use the ultimate cards on the jb site? I thought they acted like CC’s and you need to go in.

        • You've already got the cards, try them online and see if they get accepted.
You've got nothing to lose, right?

            • @pmld: Mate did you try to use them online? What error message did you get?

              • @KirKoloft: @KirKoloftGift Card Number/PIN is not valid. I don’t see a number on the back that’s 18 characters long. These appear to be the visa ultimate gift cards… do they get entered in the gift card form field section @gayanmyte ? Cheers for your help

                • @pmld: Hopefully it worked out for you.
                  Let us know.

What lens are you getting for this camera?

                  • @KirKoloft: UPDATE: Found a store that honoured the code and used the GC instore. Grabbed a 24-70 GM2 with it also 🙌

                    • +1

@pmld: Nice, how much was the lens?

                    • @pmld: curious which store sell 24-70 gm2… and how much did you got the lens for?

                      • @chjj0809: & @KirKoloft got the 24-70 GM2 from Osbourne Park WA, was $2699 stacked with the 10+15% = $2141.23. An extra $210 off that would have been nice but I just wanted to finalise the sale 😎

        • yes. I used ultimate cards.

      • online has limit for number of gift cards to use. Be aware.

  • Does anyone know if I just wanted to get 15% off lens promotion am I able to purchase camera body and lenses bundle and return the camera straight away? Pretty happy with the a7iii I purchased on Black Friday
