    Nice amount of usb ports.
    Good for running home assistant

    • +2

Second hand thin clients are perfect for Home Assistant.

      • Examples/links please? Just wanting to make sure.

        • I am currently using an HP T620 (~$40 second hand with power supply from memory) as my Home Assistant server. I used the Generic x86 image to flash it:

          https://www.home-assistant.io/installation/generic-x86-64/

These devices are fanless, and come with lots of USB and other ports that may be needed. The T620 was the cheapest I could find at the time. Any Intel-based thin client with an Ethernet port should work.

good for retro gaming emulation or arcade gaming.

  • What do people use this for? Thought it might be good as a USB NAS for the price.

    • I'm looking at low power NAS, but there are way too many options though. Like this one below, which is much better with $50 more.

      • got 128GB model around black friday for $245
        fits a shucked 5TB Seagate 2.5" being 15mm
tight squeeze puts pressure on LAN port
and screws don't go all the way in
now it's a little lopsided, few millimeters extra ventilation
toasty running ubuntu or windows 11 with docker
no problems using it as web server

I had a similar one I used to run sabnzdb, sonarr, plex server, Minecraft server, homeassistant, vpn server, calibre library and a few other apps (maybe a adblocker dns server?). And it still twiddled it's thumbs most of the time.

If you need to run windows apps, they're really good.

    • I use it a stick j4125 for parsec display…

  • why would u put a vga port on anything in 2022

    • I don't know maybe to hook up old monitor collecting dust in Garage, like some of my friends do ;-).

i suspected this much. ozbargainers hogging onto their shiny 19 inch lcd from 2005

        • I still got a 2007 19" Dell monitor with VGA. I just can't bring myself to throw it in landfill as e-waste yet lol.

LCD? Psssh. CRT is where it's at.

      backward compatibility

    • Reliability

    • +1

As per the Amazon product photo "more ports, more useful"

Good if you want to connect it to a projector or if you want to hook it up to an arcade machine since it's far easier to pinout VGA than it is to do a DVI / HDMI port.

  • Would this replace an apple mac from like 2015 or so for an old dude who after 7 years of using MacOS still doesnt think he can use it?

    • +1

Just use boot camp to install windows on the mac

    • +2

I wouldn't use this as your main computer, your Mac is probably much faster than this even taking into account the age.

  • Would the Intel N5105 version be worth the extra $20?

  • +1

The 5105 version would make a pretty nice little router or Proxmox machine.

Look at some of the refurbished 8500t usff that have been on here in the last few weeks. Significantly more processing power - CPU mark showing 7727 for 8500t vs 2987 for J4125

  • It’s advertised as low power energy efficient, but I can’t see any indication of typically wattages??
A raspberry pi 4 is 2.7 watts idle and ~6.4w under stress

    • +2

The J4125 is rated at 10W TDP so under max CPU load should pull close to 10W, then add the SSD/mobo/ram probably looking at around 12-13W under stress.

    • Although it depends on what you're asking for.

      10w @ 25c/kWh = ~$22/yr or under 50c/wk
Pretty cheap to run if that's your concern.

      • Yeah that’s not bad. I use a pi 3b as a web server and it sits at about 4w so I’m just curious how this compared. In the scheme of things 10w isn’t bad.

  • This or NVIDIA shield?

  • It might be hard to get a bigger M.2 drive for it. First of all its 2242 form factor. Which there's only a limited range of, and no bargains. And secondly its "FATA" interface according to the specs. I've never heard of that one.

    • Damn…That's a killer deal right there! You should have posted it here bro.

      • +1

Only lasted for 30 min - 1hr or so.

  • Now $229 with coupon.
