They can say 1 year, but Australian consumer law protects you. A 98 inch tv should be expected to last at least 3-5 years.

        • ACL says 8.3 years, minimum.

        • I'm waiting for people to queue up talking of their successes on tv repairs long out of their 1 year warranty. Shamesung certainly weren't shining beacons with a tv I had some years ago (before I swore never to buy a 1 year warranty tv again, and started my TCL collection).
You shouldn't have to practice deceptive strategies to find out and ring the direct number of an organisation's marketting manager, and tell them about the 60 minutes story that's on tv…. in 2 weeks time unless he gets his company to act responsibly.
I haven't worked out the average lifespan of my tcls,… but I've only had to replace one that got a dodgey picture at 6 years old. The oldest in my fleet is nearly 9 years old.

          • @rooster7777: Dodgy picture at 6 years? Eek.

How long did it take to get used to the motion handling?

            • @eccaz: Motion handling? about as long as it took to turn it on.

      • Every tv gets 3+ years with ACL.

Imagine spending this much on a TCL

Imagine spending more than this and only getting a half the screen size because you're a sucker for marketing…

      • +1

Who is going to spend $2,220 on a 49" TV?

        • Who is going to spend $2,220 a 49" TV?

A 98" screen has a viewable size of about 2.75m2.
A 65" screen has a viewable size of about 1.2m2. ie less than half.

Also, 'spending more than this' means you are spending MORE than $4444 (on a 65" screen), not less.

I can only assume you must be drunk to get this so wrong…

      • -1

It also shocks me how many people fall victim to TCL’s marketing. Their units can barely display a moving image. Horrible quality.

        • +2

Their units can barely display a moving image. Horrible quality.

Is that what the Sony sales guy told you 🤣🤣🤣
Rtings gives the Sony x90k and the TCL835 the same score. So who do I trust, my own eyes AND an reputable independent reviewer, or some anonymous clown on the internet that is a sucker for marketing lies? 😁

          • -2

@1st-Amendment: Champ why do you have such a chip on shoulder re Sony?

Your eyes clearly can’t be trusted if you think any TCL is as good as an X90K in regards to motion. The TCL is a decent budget tv, similar to Hisense, Bauhn and Ffalcon. It seems you’re the sucker for marketing gimmicks.

And do you use so many emojis? Are you a simp?

            • @eccaz:

Champ why do you have such a chip on shoulder re Sony?

I don't. Strange that you think that though… I merely compared a name brand with no-name that have similar reviews to demonstrate that your claims are baseless.

Your eyes clearly can’t be trusted if you think

Or yours can't. And since Rtings agree with my eyes, I'll trust that over some anonymous clown on the internet 🤡
              https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/tcl/8-series-2019-q825-qle…

Hmmm, Rtaings or clown, who should we trust?

And do you use so many emojis?

Because people like you are so easily triggered by them. Watch this 😎😎😎

              Are you a simp?

Simp? 2015 called and they want their lame insults back 😁😂🤣😅😆

              • @1st-Amendment: Yes I’m sure that’s why you love your emojis so much, you are very deceitful, dishonest and inaccurate.

Rtings has never actually reviewed the C835.

Vincent from HDTVTest has, and he covers both its good and bad points. https://youtu.be/ORg5dkb_ggs

I reiterate, I’m not saying the C835 is a horrible tv, what I’m saying is that its motion handling is poor. If you can’t notice it for yourself in store, here are some reviews supporting my claim:

"Motion handling is good for high frame rate content but if you watch 24fps content (almost all movies) you will notice a lot of jitter."

"Next stop was to watch some F1 on Kayo - this is simply an awful experience - in all picture modes except 'game' the static leader board text on the left-hand side contains jittery artifacts when next to fast motion - and ironically this effect is particularly bad in when in 'sport' picture mode! When in 'game' mode the text doesn't tare, however the motion jitter is just too hard to watch. With some adjustment of the ‘motion' settings I could reduce this issue but not eliminate it. Will TCL fix this with a firmware update? If not, F1 fans should be issued with a seizure warning. My 10-year-old LG 4K TV with a Google TV plugged in the back is much better than this TCL to watch F1."

                https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/tcl-c835-55-4k-full-array…

The C835 has a 100 Hz panel. However, a slightly blurred border around moving objects prevents the visibility of the finest detail when moving. By activating the “Motion clarity” settings, you do improve the stuttering of film images, but that slightly blurred edge remains. “Clear LED motion” is the usual solution for that, it uses backlight scanning, but operates at 60 Hz and causes some flickering in the image. It is less disturbing than on other devices, but we do not recommend it. The motion interpolation (“reduce shaking”) cannot avoid all stuttering in fast-moving images, so experiment for yourself what you consider acceptable.

      Cyrax Wins. Brutality.

  • +1

Obviously an RBA ploy to get people to part with their savings :D

  • Man, that'd be so awesome as a classroom TV. We are updating our classroom AV and will probably settle for 85".

If only they sold them commercially for that price.

    • -2

If only they sold them commercially for that price.

There's no reason you have to buy it commercially?

    • Get them to price match.

    • How much TV do kids watch in classrooms these days?

  • Huge TV

  • What would be the minimum viewing distance for this sized TV?

    • 3 meters

      • He said min not max

    • Just close enough that your peripheral vision is filled up with screen

These look promising. Has anyone tried a 2 x 2 video wall?

QLED is just another marketing gimmick for an LCD screen. I would rather go for OLED TVs than spending this much on a QLED.
I cannot afford to spend $4000 on tv, but that's another story

    • -1

LCD displays have got so good, it is hard to tell the difference. Even though OLED has improved too.
I recently compared a few phone screens, and was shocked to discover a good LCD display was easier to read outdoors than my fancy new OLED phone.
OLED is easier on the battery though.

The point is, compare how the screens actually look in the conditions that you watch. Don't get caught up in tech buzzwords. OLED is not automatically better.

      • +3

Don't know what LCD you are talking about. Maybe a full array LCD like this "QLED" TV from a big name brand but not a edge lit LCD. An OLED is very obvious when side by side. The colours pop out immediately.

A mobile LCD =/ = TV LCD. You won't be looking at a TV at home in direct sunlight. That why we have curtains.

There is a reason why there is a abit of a price premium on buying an OLED. It a far superior technology than LCD, even QLED TV. Don't be confuse from Samsung marketing fluff of the "QLED" moniker.

        • -1

          The colours pop out immediately.

Well that's no good. Try turning down the saturation, as the default setting may be garish, intended to impress the naive.

          That why we have curtains.

If you have curtains and want a big screen, I still recommend a good projector.

price premium on buying an OLED. It a far superior technology than LCD

By that logic, CD players should be far more expensive than good turntables. Transistors should cost more than vacuum tubes.

      • Some good comparisons with the 83" LG OLED but the reality is, this TV is in a different size class.

The reviewer made a good point, is the TCL the best quality LCD technology? No but it would be better than what 90% of the population owns.

And when you have a TV at home with nothing to compare to he was saying you would find it hard to fault.

It's pretty simple really, it's a massive good quality TV for a great price.

I would love an OLED but theirs nothing this size at a realistic price and my viewing distance is like 4.5 metres.

I haven't pulled the trigger but seriously thinking about it, the only thing stopping me is there might be cheap mini LED TVs in a years time.

        • I think Mini LED at this size would be so power hungry it would be insane.

We have an OLED and a really good LCD, I would always prefer to watch the OLED, but if you only have an LCD you really only notice issues when watching really dark stuff and the backs being all grey and a bit muddy are really noticeable.

98" is so much bigger than 83" though, it's surprisingly so, but I'd rather move the couch a little closer and get the OLED.

    • It's a really clever gimmick though, most people confuse it with OLED. Borderline deception.

  • -4

Why does anyone want a 98" television? Pretty ridiculous for 99.9% of homes in Australia.

    • If they were easy to move, a 110" would be perfect for our loungeroom. We really only watch movies and a lot of those aren't as big due to the cinemascope framing, so for the cinema experience I want as big a screen as possible. We ended up with an Epson short throw laser, and an automated motorised ambient light rejecting screen. Total cost was about the same as this TV. It's super bright, the colour looks amazing and it's much easier to move (we rent) and when it's not on, there is just the normal wall, not a giant black square.

Certainly a lot of homes a 98" TV would be too big, I'm not sure we would be able to get one that size into our lounge room. The motorised screen was tricky enough. Unless watching 4K UHD discs or rips though, things would look chunky on a 98" LCD I reckon. Can't imagine broadcast TV is watchable on it, but I could be wrong.

      • What projector and screen did you end up getting? I’ve been toying with that idea but there’s so much choice I’m a bit baffled…especially since ALR screens can cost a few grand alone!

    • Plenty run bigger projectors at home.

    • I have an old 1080p projector with 110 or 130 inch screen and bought a new 75 inch TV last year. Picture quality and convenience TV all the way, But for movies and sports, everyone in my family still prefer bigger screen at night.

    • Said no one ever

  • +1

I have a Sony 75” LCD , and I love the picture quality , but it’s a bright room with 2 walls of floor to ceiling windows , so I prefer a bright tv for use in the day time, and Sony LCD gives me that… Sony image processing is certainly worth the premium…98” is certainly a great size for a TV

Using the term QLED to confuse people that they are buying OLED seems a bit cheap though …..

However OLED tv’s are great for use in a darkened room
at night…. However, for my movie room downstairs, I still prefer my 120 inch projector over a smaller OLED TV.

    • I have a 2018 Sony 75" X90F TV as well, but it is starting to feel small in the last year or maybe even 2! This 98" TV at $4444 is really tempting! The only thing I am unsure about is whether 720p content, which my wife watches, is watchable or not. Does anyone have any experience viewing 720p content in this size TV?????

      • +1

Fam member's got a 100" tv. TBH the answer to your question is very subjective and boils down to what your wife would deem acceptable. For me personally most youtube stuff at 720p sitting on their sofa which is around 4 metres away is barely watchable, because we also watch 4k netflix on it so the difference is just too discernable. However at 7 metres when standing in their kitchen watching old music videos etc is not so bad as its all smoothed out anyway. I have noticed however that if the 720p content (old rips) is encoded at a high enough bit rate AND played through a good upscaler eg nvidia shield, it doesn't look so bad. HTH. YMMV.

      • 720P via an AppleTV to the 110inch screen doesn't look that bad. Broadcast TV at 720P though is probably ugly.

  • +2

For anyone actually looking at buying on of these, this is a great price! TCL recently updated the software as well which has removed id say almost all of the stability issues and lag with the software.

This isn’t as good as the Samsung 98” - but you can buy two for the same price… (which was my deciding factor when I got one around a year ago).

This also has side mounted feet (compared to a central stand on the Samsung) so you’ll need a long cabinet or a solid wall mount.

In any case for the price and size - highly recommended! Not the best for glare reduction so it’s a bit of a challenge in rooms with lots of windows but obviously works great once the sun sets!

  • Shame, they won’t deliver to Cairns :-(

  • Most chinese will buy the numbers meant good luck

    • Really?? What alternate universe are you from??

    • You are clearly not chinese? For those that don't know why chinese don't favor the letter 4. This is because 4 in chinese sounds like "dead" or "die". So 4444 basically sounds like die die die die.

      • Even 4,444 sounds like that or would it just be 4,4,4,4 ?

    • Maybe palover means, most chinese will buy the number(s) that mean good luck

      • That's why number 8 houses are usually more expensive

  • Does anyone know if there was a 98" 2022 model? Are these being updated every 2 years? That size, that price but mini/ micro led.

    • Not TCL - if you want 98” MiniLED on sale is Aus is the Samsung. It was around $10k Boxing Day sale (Less if you had Samsung EPP).

  • If I could swing $4k at the moment I wouldnt hesitate. I own a couple of TCL TV's. If only I didnt have gaming PC's for the kids to go under the tree tomorrow night.

I was trying to do the math on affording this and the only way it could have happened was if I didn't build the PCs. Kids better enjoy playing on what could have been my 98inch TV

    • +2

Return the gaming PC for a refund, and tell them they can play their games on "everyone's" new 98" TV :)

  • Anyone has any thoughts on how the TCL C735 compares against the Hisense U7H series? The 98" Hisense is on special for $4995

    https://www.domayne.com.au/hisense-98-inch-u7hau-4k-uhd-uled…

    • +1

the Hisense is technically a 2022 TV but upon comparing specs the biggest difference is that the TCL uses a VA panel (6500:1 specified contrast ratio), whereas the Hisense uses an IPS/ADS panel (1200:1 specified contrast ratio).

Both these TVs do not have a wide-angle viewing layer, which means the Hisense would likely have an advantage for off angle viewing, but for straight on viewing would not be as good native contrast wise.

I believe the TCL has 192 dimming zones, around 700nits peak brightness, and 95% DCI-P3 Colour Gamut. Not sure about the Hisense.

TCL Just released a Mini-LED 98" in China for under $5000 AUD with 1600nits peak brightness, 672 dimming zones, and micro lens technology. Maybe in 2023 we could see it in Australia.

  • +1

You can get this for $3999.6 from Harvey Norman - that’s after their 10% Store discount gift card. I think the offer of 10% is only for today

    • +1

You are still paying $4444 though, but will end up with a $444.40 GC that is only valid for 1 month I believe?

      • Wish I had read your comments earlier. Ordered from JB and now scheduled for delivery on 30th 😞

        • How are you liking your new TV? Mine arrived 3 days ago. The factory sharpness was set WAY too high. Everything looked like an oil painting.

          • @Jinster: Sorry, not yet opened. I had opted for wall
Mount installation as well from JB. So they have scheduled mounting appt for 11th Jan.

Hopefully can update you on the 12th. How r u liking yours? Did you do some specific settings to work and look excellent?

I have been investing in 2.1 certified HDMI cables. I know once this TV is on wall, would be impossible to do certain physical changes. So put all wires behind wall, 4 HDMI cables as well.

  • Was looking at this for my theatre room in the new house build but still got a year minimum until its done, i best hodl incase something better or cheaper comes next year.
