Thats not much profit for a lot of risk of the card being hacked.
Lots of ppl here have had issues.
Only buy if you have something you can buy immediately.

    • It blocked the payment to my local council (maybe all NSW councils) after the ATO relax.

      • after the ATO relax.

So they started working on ATO now ?

      • Central coast council still works

        • It may be due to my local council. I tried Activ VISA, Aupost MC, but to no avail recently.

      • Lodge another complaint to AFCA (https://www.afca.org.au) as they seem to block cards as/when they feel like it. They could in theory relax ALL the restrictions, but they are choosing not to.

    • +11

      2000 point = $10
      Minus activation $7

      Profit $3

      Not even slightly worth it.

      • +1

        $100 is preferred here.

      • +6

But when there is a $3 cashback on amazon giftcards on cashrewards/shopback, pple go crazy and up votes of 100+. Hmmm

        • +1

Those can't get hacked. Also digital delivery is more convenient.

          • -1

@itsfree: So people thought with deliveroo gift cards.

            • +4

              @ATangk: Amazon ain't going bankrupt tho šŸ˜‰

        • +1

It's the proportion as well. Only need to front $30 to get $3 back plus a small cashback. That's ~10%.

$5 profit on a $100 card doesn't make it as good.

  • -4

I have a feeling it will be 'limit one bonus per account'.

    • +2

      Why do you think that?

If you look at the image posted by the OP, it says in the fine print below the images of the gift cards:

BONUS POINTS can be awarded more than once for each Gift Card type including different denominations of the same Gift Card but can only be collected up to 5 times per Flybuys account.

    • Feelings
      Nothing more than feelings
Trying to forget the fine print of deals

  • Only 2000? That doesn't look like much

  • Limited to five cards per account.

    • -2

Only if you have an account and didn't forget to scan it.

      • +1

This one time I didnā€™t forget to scan something I almost didnā€™t remember. Now that I remembered it, Iā€™ll try not to forget again

      • +1

But if you forget to scan your account, you do not get the 2000 Flybuys points and thus making a $100 MasterCard purchase a loss of $7 instead of a ā€˜gainā€™ of $3.

        • +1

Obviously this would be a terrible customer experience, and so Coles create a new Flybuys account ā€œon the flyā€ for you, deposit your points, and the manager invites you into their office for coffee and cake to discuss the myriad of benefits now available to you as a newly minted member of Colesā€™ premium loyalty program. I didnā€™t have the heart to explain that I just forgot to scan my existing card, so now I have this extra account I hardly use

      • Cannot the coles CS add the bonus points afterwards with the receipts ?? if someone has forgotten to scan it ??

        • Not the bonus points. Would just refund and repurchase.

        • +2

CS can add you flybuys within 7 days and then you do receive the points. I made that mistake once.

  • With the last deal, my FlyBuys account had bonus 5 and bonus 10 times points so basically I double dipped so I wouldn't recommend going just for bonus flybuy points you're better off with the discount and then hoping for a bonus in your FlyBuys account

    • But they don't stack… can't get other bonuses anyway if buying gift cards.

      • I have points double stacking all the time. Sometimes i get lucky and get 2 spend $$ get bonus **** and they both get put on my card. On top of the other promos that may be running like 5Ɨ points. With gift cards. Not sure. I dont buy them

        • +1

Iā€™ve been able to double stack offers too but only on regular groceries, hasnā€™t worked on gift card deals (only get base points).

      • ???

I got bonus flybuy points and the 10% discount on the pre-paid MasterCards, so yes it double stacked

        • +1

Strange then, Iā€™ve tried before and they havenā€™t stacked, only got base points.

  • +1

hol up they charging a fee to purchase? I gotta buy somthing then pay to use it? Is this the pinnacle of capitalism?

    • -1

Activation fees are standard for EFT/prepaid credit cards. Probably helps deter laundering?

      • +4

Those with money to launder would just count the activation fees as a cost of doing business.

  • +4

Bank saving rates going around 4.2% so why risk hacking gift card for 0.8% profit?

    • +6

      $110 for $105 output = 4.8% profit.

Also takes a year to get 4.2% from the bank, 4.8% available here as quick as you can spend the card!

      • +3

Also takes a year to get 4.2% from the bank,

Actually, if you ask the bank nicely, theyā€™ll give you 100% on the spot! Better bring a briefcase, or a few duffle bags.

4.8% available here as quick as you can spend the card!

Tell me again that inflation isnā€™t a self-inflicted injury

      • -2

Well what you need to know is whether you have immediate need for spend is there or not.

So people here talking about council bills which you can pay over the years and no need to pay upfront for 5% discount as you closer to that discount if you pay over the year, same applies to all utilities payment.

But if you say want to buy something now and use now then probably what you saying is worth not for hoarding groceries or gift cards. That you eventually use over longer periods in my opinion.

If it was 10% like last time then it is worth buying and spending over year.

I might buy 1 or 2 that I need for something now but not going crazy over it..

        • That's some rambling nonsense sir. Tighten up your wordgame.

    • In addition, your savings you gain from bank interest on savings account will get taxed at your tax rate.

      • that is good point .. but hackers can take away 100% from card …. is the risk you need to use to decide where you invest !

  • +1

It's not worth to risk considering that there is just around 4.55% profit for $100 and 3.75% profit for $250. Not a deal for me.

    • How it can be 3.75% for $250 card?

      • i assume it is $10 off, not 10% off last previous offers

      • -1

You are spending $257 for getting a total value of $267. So do a simple mathematic calculation to get the discount rate: 1 - (257/267) would result in 3.75%.

        • +5

I would not consider the $7 purchase fee as ā€œvalueā€. Maybe not until one of my Coles Mastercard gift cards is hacked and I have to get staff to help raise transaction disputes. Even then, based on conversations with other OzBargainers, I very much doubt you really get $7 of ā€œvalueā€ when interacting with InCommā€¦

The ā€œcorrectā€ way to look at this is:

          • You pay $257 upfront. $250 is loaded onto the gift card, and $7 is kept by Heritage Bank (the gift card issuer) and/or InComm (the gift card scheme owner) to do as they see fit with it.

          • Through this deal, you will get 2,000 bonus Flybuys points on top of the 257 Flybuys points you will earn everyday when purchasing a $250 Coles Mastercard gift card.

          • Therefore, through this deal, you will spend $257, but you will get $250 on a Coles Mastercard gift card and 2,257 Flybuys points (which is equivalent to $11.28 in Flybuys Dollars).

Flybuys points do not have monetary value associated with them (at least according to the Flybuys terms and conditions), but if we ignore that and treat the $11.28 in Flybuys Dollars as having monetary value, the calculation you did previously would actually be:

          ā€œPercentage profitā€ = 1 - (gift card cost / (gift card face value + Flybuys Dollars value))
          = 1 - (257/261.28)
          = 1.64%

          • @WookieMonster: Yes, you are correct. It would be only 1.64% profit for $250 then…

          • @WookieMonster: So 5.00% profit for $100 card.

            • +7

@alphaoasis: 4.99% (and I did see you say 5.65% before!)

              • You pay $105 upfront. $100 is loaded onto the gift card, and $5 is kept by Heritage Bank (the gift card issuer) and/or InComm (the gift card scheme owner) to do as they see fit with it.

              • Through this deal, you will get 2,000 bonus Flybuys points on top of the 105 Flybuys points you will earn everyday when purchasing a $100 Coles Mastercard gift card.

              • Therefore, through this deal, you will spend $105, but you will get $100 on a Coles Mastercard gift card and 2,105 Flybuys points (which is equivalent to $10.52 in Flybuys Dollars).

              Doing the sums…:

              ā€œPercentage profitā€ = 1 - (gift card cost / (gift card face value + Flybuys Dollars value))
              = 1 - (105/(100+10.52))
              = 4.99%

              • @WookieMonster: I think the cost is $105, cashback as FB points are worth $10+0.52 = $10.52 , so net cost will be $105-$10.52 = $94.48 which gives you ability to spend $100 so savings on $100 is $100-$94.48=$5.52 so % saving is 5.52/100=5.52%

                • +1

@SydBoy: That assumes the Flybuys points you receive from this deal are as good as cash.

I personally do not consider Flybuys points (or Flybuys Dollars) as good as cash for a number of reasons:

                  • Flybuys points (and by extension, Flybuys Dollars) are not actually cash sitting in a wallet or in a bank account. Flybuys could shut down your account at any time or the entire scheme could be shut down one day, which means that until you redeem the points (much like you redeem a gift card), your points are really just digits on a website or on a receipt. (I'm sure someone will point out that you can say something similar about fiat currency or a bank account, but I think it is more likely that Flybuys will shut down my account or the entire system than a government withdrawing fiat currency or a bank collapsing. I mean, Woolworths shut down the Frequent Shopper Club in January 2021.)

                  • If I redeem Flybuys Dollars at a participating retailer, I do not pay GST on the amount paid for with Flybuys Dollars.

                  • If I purchase an item from a business accepting Flybuys Dollars and then return it and manage to get a refund, the refund amount goes onto the store's own gift card (e.g. Coles Groceries & Returns gift card, Target gift card, Officeworks gift card). I don't think gift cards are as good as cash, as they're really a pinky-promise from a business that in the future you will be able to redeem a certain dollar value from them for goods or services.

                  • Not everyone uses the 2000 points = $10 in Flybuys Dollars rule of thumb. For example, if you convert your Flybuys points into Velocity points, any valuation goes out the window, because a value of a Velocity point will depend on how you redeem it. Yes, people will usually give a range as a notional value, but there is no one universally accepted dollar value of a Velocity point, which therefore means that any Flybuys points you converted into Velocity would no longer have a specific dollar value.

                  • If you redeem your Flybuys points for a TCN gift card being sold at a discount (or offering bonus Flybuys points) on the Flybuys Rewards Store, what was the actual value of the points?

If I had to treat Flybuys Dollars as anything in order to determine "profit", I would treat it as a gift card, which is why I rigged up my formula above to show this. In reality, my expenses tracking system does not consider any Flybuys points on the purchases at all. The Flybuys points that I convert into Flybuys Dollars are actually treated separately to any gift cards I may have purchased that earned the Flybuys points in the first place.

                  • One line in my system records the purchase of the gift card, noting that I paid $5 or $7 as a purchase fee at the time of purchase.

                  • When I convert my Flybuys points into Flybuys Dollars, I record this on my expenses tracking system in a separate line as me gaining $10 (or some multiple) for future redemption(s) at participating retailers.

This whole argument is academic anyway (which is the reason I usually stay away from them). Everyone sees value in Flybuys points (and by extension, Flybuys Dollars) differently and I get it! As long as you think you are getting value from this deal, I think that is the most important factor.

                • @SydBoy: That's a different way of analysing it. Like your calculation @WookieMonster's formula calculated the relative saving rather than the return on investment or percentage profit. The absolute profit or saving is the same, where your methods differ is whether the value of your FlyBuys increases your return or lowers your cost base. Lowering your cost base makes the relative discount or profit larger even though it is the same in absolute value.

I take the view that the FBs should be on the return side of the ledger. I might take a different view if they were immediately credited to the account and could be spent in the same shopping trip. Actually, assuming the card is quickly provisioned with the credit amount you could take the view that the card is as good as the original funding source so ignoring FB's your cost base is $5 ($105 - $100.) For that cost of $5 you have bought at least 2105 FBs and the drawback and benefits of having funds locked in a credit card. It is a cheap way of buying FBs but on the other hand you can usually get them for free without any special effort.

          • @WookieMonster: That formula is inverted: It should be: (face value + rewards value) / cost - 1 (multiply result by 100 for percentage rather than a ratio)
If you don't believe me, use your formula on a gift card with a $200 face value bought at a $100 cost.

What your formula calculates is the effective relative discount.

Some people will of course earn more Flybuys or some other reward points depending on what payment method they use or place a higher value on the points they receive

  • +3

Too much effort for not much reward.

  • +1

    I will buy them all.

    • +1

Limit 5 Gift Cards per Flybuys account

      • +1

        The user name checks out.

      • +1

Im wealthy. I dont care about bonus points

        • -1

most wealthy people don't buy gift cards

          • +1

@Poor Ass: Just trying to burn some cash*

            • @BurnSomeCashs: money laundering

              • @Poor Ass: Lmao. Seriously?. Does money laundering people exist on ozrrp

                • @BurnSomeCashs: yeah of course

                  legal form of laundering

Coles Mastercard gift cards were infamous for buy then wash and repeat… people went to the effort of buying them before just so that they can buy the same thing again and again trying to squeeze as much money out of it as possible…. lots of effort

  • +1

It was 10% off just before, now that was a good value.

    • Ahh but was it really 10% off?

      • Well it's just the reference. Sure was around 8% in the end.
But this one is not really 2000 points then.

  • +1

might want to peruse https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/724029 before buying. very risky for little reward

    discount locked to coles
    interest rates increased substantially
risk of fraudulent transactions on card is high - people are waiting for replacement cards for months
it has been reported that the places where you can use the card are being restricted

  • This needs a stackable promotion or the ability to bundle the registration fee… what a ridiculous return for the consumer.

  • +1

There's currently 10% off Google Play gift cards at Woolies until Tuesday, including $100 ones (I just bought one today).

    • +3

ā€¦ and if you visit or call Officeworks, you can get them to price-beat the Woolies offer and get the Google Play gift card at a 14.5% discount (assuming you get an Officeworks staff member who will actually follow the price-beat policyā€¦)

  • +1

Oops… I saw it in my store and thought it was an ongoing deal.
Have just bought 5, what should I do?

    • Gift them as xmas presents.

      • Could I refund them?

        • +1

No because they've already been loaded up

    • Send flybuys a message with a photo of the promotional material advertised in store. They might credit the points as good will

  • -2

Only use i see is using these cards to pay your council rates.

Therefore earning FF points for the spend, and or making up a required spend for bonus points (ie spend $3k in 90 days for 80 000 pts).

Other than that..it's a rubbish deal.

*Obviously only buy if you have a second Flybuys card, otherwise your spend requirements for bonus points will be heading north.

    • otherwise your spend requirements for bonus points will be heading north.

Hasn't affected spend requirements for a while now, seen plenty of people in previous deals say it hasn't.

    • +2

Last lots I paid prepaid ATO debt, HECS debt, rates, water and electricity. They blocked ATO for a while until ozb put in a complaint. Who knows if it will work this time around.

  • +2

Another reason to buy may be to meet a new Credit Card purchase requirement. EG $5000 in first 3 months sort of requirement.
Note: You will need multiple Flybuy cards though.

  • thanks for sharing!

  • $100 would be the better value vs $250 if 2000 = $10 points is the bonus

  • And 5 free $1.50 coffees and an almost free ps5

    https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/real-life/news-life/how-saā€¦

    • -1

The best thing about a strategy like this is that Everyday Rewards points are almost unhackable

      • +2

You mean Flybuys are almost unhackable.

    • +3

I love how they consider the value of the everyday rewards to be $0, when they are functionally 2000 = $10. Clickbaity idiots.

      • +1

In my mind, when I buy something with a gift card itā€™s free!

        • +3

          That is dangerous.

    • +1

You won't receive 4c off for a $1.50 coffee when you purchase the GC.
It seems didn't work since last promotion.

      • Thanks for the heads up. If so, pointless to buy them separately now.

One of my local serves disabled small coffee option for weeks. I think it did it on purpose.

        • Maybe they are giving you a free upgrade to medium? When my local runs out of small cups that is what they always do.

  • Anyone know if you can use the Google Play giftcard to pay for YouTube Premium? You used to be able to use them for Google Play music but no idea if you can use them for YouTube music / YouTube Premium.

    • +2

Yes you can. You will need to make sure you update the payment method on Google Pay so it goes off your GC balance. Iā€™ve been doing this for years.

  • Can someone please remind me, do these activate immediately or do they take 24 hours?

    • I havenā€™t had recent experience with these prepaid gift cards, but they usually activate immediately after the purchase request is approved at the Coles checkout.

It took up to four hours to activate in some of the past 10% off deals, but that was only during that dealā€¦

    • My recent personal experience was activation within minutes. IE Bought the Coles cards then by the time I walked across the road to Woolworths to buy the 10% off Ultimate gift cards, it was activated and my purchase was successful.

  • seems Coles Mastercard is not accepted by Shopback any more?
