If I recall correctly, the promo code basically offsets the old RRP since there was a massive price hike as Meta were losing money on each headset?

    • +2

Sounds about right. I paid $479 for the 128GB model.

      • +1

These are definitely more expensive…at least 30% on previous years.

        • Yeah i paid $479 for mine aswell. offset price is pretty cool from amazon but ye

    • True, at least Amazon is trying to offset, else Mark wanted more money ! It’s same like PS5 where Sony jacked up the price !

  • +10

Free Beat Saber game included ?

Edited: if you activate your Quest 2 before 31/12/2022, Beat Saber game is included for free. More info: https://www.meta.com/en-gb/help/quest/articles/in-vr-experie…

    Oculus Quest 2 128GB $629
    Same as last deal

Hardly. I got one for $479

    • +1

Yeah but this version you get legs!

      • +6

        you get legs!

It's almost Xmas and I'm planning on being legless…

        • Welcome to Metaverse, where it's Christmas every day.

  • +4

Yesterday Meta announced a 7% GPU increase… impressive on a 2+ year old device.

    https://www.theverge.com/2022/12/21/23521349/meta-quest-2-gp…

    • never use the mobile parts of it I only use it with the PC because I like reals games like half life alyx lol. The quest with the offical cable and wifi 6 playing is so good on a PC had it since launch still works great.

      • I've got my beatsaber copy on quest so i run it off there. i do like it and it runs super well and looks good. some updates though beatsaber stutters a bit when launching or restarting songs unfortunately. I've tried a cracked version of beatsaber on pc and not much noticeable difference. if there's a big sale or a need for me to play on pc then I might get it off there.

vrchat runs pretty iffy on quest indeed though definitely use my actual desktop for that w either airlink or quest cable but the cable is pretty annoying tbh..

vettinf a wifi 6 802.11x from that asus router deal $180 ish router to $65 so that should help right?! wait but does the quest even support that lmao.. and air link is it based on ur intern speed or local router speed right

        • for beatsaber on PC I always use the offical oculus cable so I dont' get latency issues ever. I only use the wifi 6 wireless option for games like FPS games. So I have 360 degrees of turning. I used to use virtual desktop I bought it back in the day but when airlink was sable and got better I just rolled with it and it works great now. Yeah as long as your wifi connection is near and nothing else interfers with your connection you should be fine.

If this is your first Oculus/Meta headset don't forget to use a referral link to get an additional $47 Oculus Store Credit (both the referee and referrer get it!). You have to use the referral link before creating your account. Do it before it even the package even arrives, then it'll award the credit once you sign into your new headset.

    • +2

Praying to the referral gods that someone actually clicks on my referral link!

    • +1

Did all this from last deal and still no credit for either of us. I need to put in a support request.

  • damn you can't get the oculus quest pro controllers on amazon…. ready wanted those.

  • +3

Can't believe the price hike on these… I remember paying $420~ around 2 years ago for a Quest 2 on Amazon.

    • I know but I'm confused… did they simply jack the price or do these have better hardware/features over the older quest 2?

      • +1

Apparently the model was/is being sold below cost, so they’ve just stopped subsidising it (as much?).

    • Yeah I remembered the $429 price as well.
Someone corrected me though that price was for the 64gb model. It was before they made 128gb the base model.
Lowest for 128gb model is $479 before any promo credit or cashback.

  • Meta will slowly kill their sh*tty Meta universe will be the biggest failure.

If you're buying one of these and have a capable PC, get Half Life: Alyx and Half Life 2 (either by itself or as part of the Orange Box / Complete collection)to play via PCVR from this other deal:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/747001

    You won't regret it.

Also for those who don't have a PC capable, you can still jump into Doom 2, Quake, Return Castle Wolfenstein, and others via SideQuest:
    https://sidequestvr.com

    • Apparently motion-sickness aplenty with those SideQuest FPS games.

    • Does Half Life 2 work with VR?

I'm going to get an Oculus Quest and Alyx. But never heard of HL2 being VR too.

    • +1

I hope to not have to invest in an entire PC and graphics card to use this thing, but what do you guys think about the built in VR games and experiences?

I won a Vive recently but when I realised that it was PC only (which wasn't what they thought they were giving away mind you) I got paid out and so I can now buy one of these, but I'm in no rush so my second question is what are the chances this will get cheaper again? I would be totally putting the trigger for under $500, but for $629 I'm not sure how much I need the additional storage, and I heard that you need to invest in some decent accesories like headbands etc. Conversely do people think the price of these will just keep going up?

Just checking the promo credt, it reads to me that it's good as an amazon gift card almost, I don't know how often I buy "excluded items" but generally I only buy stuff that shipped free with Prime, is all my stuff typically sold by Amazon? or is that quite restrictive? Also couldn't see a time limit on the credit on the T's and C's

I'm also juggling using the money to put to either a Series S or a Legends Pinball, but the latter isn't easy to get around here

      • I think it all comes down to your expectations and what you want to get out of it. You need to keep in mind that you're not going to run PCVR quality graphics natively on the headset, with those expectations in check I think your next step is to look over the game catalogue and see if there are things you'll enjoy.

Some people get stuck into FPS games like Contractors and Pavlov, some get addicted to Beat Sabre with custom songs (need to mod it, it is easy), while others just like the social aspect with friends playing chill games like Walkabout Mini Golf or Real VR Fishing.

I've got all the above mentioned games and I find them all great fun for different reasons. My friends almost exclusively play Walkabout Mini Golf and they would all agree even just that for the social time we've had playing, particularly during the lockdowns etc. made the headset 100% worth it.

As for accessories, again this will depend on your preference. Between my 3 friends and myself with a headset, I'm the only one who has bought accessories as I wanted the halo style head strap and it only cost about $30 from AliExpress. My friends still rock the stock strap. Two of us use batteries that we had lying around to charge other devices to extend playtime when needed rather than getting something neat and custom for the headset. Sure some people go big into accessories but that is personal preference.

Meta has said the Quest 3 will launch in 2023, I would expect it to happen at their event around October, so whether you want to wait until then is up to you. I would not expect the Quest 2 to see much better deal until closer to the Quest 3 being released.

  • +1

Is this the best VR platform available? Have such difficulty buying into anything to do with FB/Meta…

    • +4

Definately the best in terms of $ value for my research, the next step is the HTC Vive or Steam Index which are both over $1000

      • Reviews of the Vive are that while it's higher res it's actually a lot worse experience overall, at least from what I read on here and reddit

        • +1

New HTC Vive Flow is coming out.
          https://www.gizmodo.com.au/2021/10/the-htc-vive-flow-is-a-li…

Haven't compared specs or anything, but they say it's a direct competitor to Quest 2 (too bad for HTC Quest 3 is coming out next year).

One thing I can see straight away though which is an improvement over the Quest 2 is the Vive Flow definitely is slimmer so it won't be as front heavy as the Quest 2 or 3. Quest 3 is also going to have the same front battery design, even though because of pancake lenses it is a bit thinner than Quest 2.

          • @harshbdmmaster718: So you reckon I should just hang on to my money for an extra year or two and I would either get a better unit or pay less? I am kinda in no rush, it would be nice and I like VR and am annoyed google dropped support for theirs, but like most people here I can probably play my back catalogue of 200 or so xbox games that I haven't had time to play

            • +1

@Jackson: ……and in a year or two there will also be another better model avail in a year or two, that's technology for you.
Oculus 2 is very decent as a stand alone VR headset with lots of games, accessories and software updates. It really comes down to yourself and interest in this tech as it stands right now rather than always looking at what may appear late next year and at a higher cost. Xbox games are a different thing altogether i.e. not VR.

              • @Borg: True, I think I just have too many hobbies that compete against each other, and it means that a lot of tech I buy I don't use much or for long periods, which has steered me towards buying retro tech when it drops in price. I really should find someone who has one to try out, but I actually don't know anyone who has one atm.

While not VR there can be still quite immersive experiences on consoles, I played a few levels of Star Wars Squadrons recently and it's quite immersive sitting in from of a large tv which takes up quite a bit of your field of view. I would like to see how much if at all it would be better on PSVR but again don't know anyone with one (and there goes a comment below saying they also played squadrons on this and it's like flying in space, so maybe it is!)

            • @Jackson: "So you reckon I should just hang on to my money for an extra year or two and I would either get a better unit or pay less? "

I can't promise it because they might tack on some kind of extra Australia tax but that's what I will be doing waiting for the Quest 3 when it's release is around the corner. Seems a bit dumb to pay the hiked price for Quest 2 when the model is on the way out.
One point that I would say makes the AU pricing most likely similar to US pricing is Meta relies on data collection for a chunk of profit with their headsets, that's how they can sell their headsets at competitive prices without much loss.

I learned of some news just yesterday though, turns out Quest 2 just got a "performance bump" through software. Most likely I think to stop those who buy it right now from complaining when the Quest 3 is released next year at a similar price range.

Also my error for mentioning the HTC Vive Flow in the comment above. The article I linked is wrong in saying the Vive Flow a direct competitor to Quest 2. I just watched a few videos on it yesterday and Vive Flow is worse in most specs and is a weird "anywhere VR" design which relies on an Android phone to be it's controller. Not as exciting as a product as I first thought when reading that article.

If anyone is going to buy this, don't forget to use a referral link from ozbargain. This would give you and a random ozbargain quest owner $47 to spend in the quest store. Nothing to lose and pure profit, surprise an ozbargainer this Christmas ;)

Ozbargain Oculus referral page here - Click the "random link" in that page and accept referral while signed into your meta account. You need to do this before you activate your quest :)

Heads up re the $150 Amazon credit T&C's which I wasnt aware of when buying from previous deal. The credit can only be used on items sold AND fulfilled by Amazon Australia. None of the Quest 2 accessories I want fit this criteria. I think I just need to buy $150 worth of toilet paper and use $150 of my money to buy the accessories.

    • Yeap and I was about to post about that. Kind of silly especially anyone buying an Oculus 2 should definitely replace the headstrap ASAP for comfort reasons. None of the decent ones like e.g. Kiwi Design or BOBOVR can be purchased using the store credit as they are all sold directly via the Vendor rather than Amazon direct (last I checked). The $150 I suppose is good for those that shop for Amazon Direct only items.

    • What accessories would you recommend?

      • +1

To begin with a headstrap as the default one isn't comfortable. I personally grabbed the Kiwi Design one like this. I (using velcro) strap a powerbank to the back of it for extended power. Others prefer the BOBOVR M.2 ones but either are great. Other accessories can come later assuming you enjoy your new toy.

      • New foam is worth considering, probably either from Kiwi Design or VRCover.

    • Hey try this hack which has worked for me before with promo credit.

Add a shipped and sold by Amazon AU item to your cart first (something cheap or something you were going to buy anyway like food/drinks/laundry powder etc), then add a Fulfilled by Amazon item after and then checkout and buy both.
You should be able to see the discount apply before clicking "place your order". If it's not reducing the price of the Fulfilled item it's not working.
I have successfully used promo credit on Fulfilled items this way.
Not sure if they have closed the loophole but worth a try.

If not maybe try with a more expensive item sold by Amazon AU and make sure the Fulfilled item is cheaper. I can't remember exactly but maybe this is how I got it to work.

  • After paying like $400 after cashback I'm not going to be upvoting a quest 2 deal for ages. Price hike sucks.

  • +3

Im using this with Star Wars squadrons. It's like actually flying in space.

    • How is the game overall? Is there a VR version you can link to?

      • +1

Yep, you buy the PC version. The install oculus link on your pc. The game runs through the headset but your pc does all the grunt work. Connect the oculus via a usbc cable to the pc.

    • Could be worth also checking out Elite: Dangerous (needs to be played with mouse/keyboard, standard game controller, or ideally a flight stick or HOTAS), or possibly No Man's Sky.

  • Was going to buy as had X amount of hours left to get it before Christmas for delivery option

But looks like that has now changed in the last few hours to the 27th.

Saved myself some $$ for boxing day sales

  • How much do you think you'd need to spend for a suitable PC?

    • +1

(Just in case anyone doesn't know already, you can also use Quest 2 without a PC to play mobile VR games.)

I haven't been checking PC hardware lately so definitely don't take my word for it, but current PCPartPicker guides make it look like it could be approaching AU$1000. Sometimes you can actually get prebuilt deals cheaper than you can buy the parts these days.

    • Depends on the PCVR games you want to play and what sort of performance you want, as it does with flat screen gaming. I have a GTX1080 and it still handles most games to my liking so I'd imagine a RTX3060 or better would do the job. I haven't even bothered to try flight simulator because I've heard that is pretty demanding.

      • Thanks for the info. What's the cost on the PC you'd recommend?

    • +1

I don't think that's how the value proposition works.

To get the best value for tethered use with Meta Quest 2 you should already have a pretty powerful PC.
If you already have a PS5 then PSVR2 becomes the better option.

If you are like me and have never tried VR and don't have a gaming PC then it's probably best value to wait for Quest 3 release next year and use it as standalone all in one headset. Zuck leaked the price point is very similar to Quest 2's "new" raised price point so 300 to 500USD (before tax) depending on storage, which should be around $500 to $820 local Australia price (this is based on current conversion + 10% tax).

      • You can't get the new Half Life on PS5 though can you? I feel like you'd get a lot more options and better quality games with a PC.

Sounds like your saying a PS5 with VR2 ends up cheaper than the PC and OQ2?

        • +1

"You can't get the new Half Life on PS5 though can you?"

No you are right if you are after specific content then you are restricted to what's available with a particular headset.

"Sounds like your saying a PS5 with VR2 ends up cheaper than the PC and OQ2?"

No not at all. Actually when I was reading comments in a PS5 deal or PSVR2 forum post, people were giving examples and seemed to be suggesting PS5+PSVR2 solution actually costs more.
But it really depends on the specs of the PC you get. I think the examples given by users were "good enough" PC's, but if you wanted to get the TOTL PC system I am pretty sure it would not more than a PS5+VR2 system.
But if you have neither a gaming PC or PS5 it's not good value either way that's a lot of money you will need to spend to buy either combination of 2 expensive products.

What I was suggesting in my original comment above was, if you already have a good gaming PC then Quest 2 becomes good value proposition. If you already have a PS5 then PSVR2 becomes good value proposition.
And if you have neither, than Quest 3 will probably be good enough as a standalone all in one because it's the first time you are trying VR.

          • @harshbdmmaster718: … how much do you think a decent rig to run this VR would be? That's what I was interested in finding out.

            • @Coltrainz: Not an expert myself. Just have been reading and watching up on it a lot because I am interested myself.

Haven't done much research on the tethered side of VR. I am just keen on the Quest 3 when it's released next year since I am in no rush.

        • There’s a chance they could announce a port of Half-Life: Alyx in the future, since Valve released console ports of many of their past games, but it’s completely uncertain. Even if we knew Valve had plans to do it it wouldn’t be guaranteed.

(A PSVR1 port would have been too difficult due to the PS4 power and controllers functions.)

  • Just checking on desktop - how funny…….the Amazon App shows 27th for delivery and Desktop browser shows 24th for Delivery
    No…now the apps also shows 24th too….geez

  • Got the 128gb for my son and he used it for max 5 times. Thinkin of selling it. How much should I advertise it for 🤔

    • +1

If you consider the discounts as cash then you are already down to about 470 new, but I just checked marketplace and there's someone selling 256Gb sealed new for 450, so realistically if you want to move it quick you will probably have to sell under 400, and further down if you didn't keep the box etc.

      • There is an offer for free the Beat Saber game which is additional value when you buy a new product.

        • Do you know what's that's worth? You will also miss out of the referral credit mentioned below. If it all add up 300 could be reasonable

  • +1

Must Haves on PC: HL: Alyx, Boneworks, Walking Dead S&S.

Must haves on Quest: Walking Dead S&S, Pistol Whip, Beat Saber, Resident Evil 4. I also really liked The Room and The Climb

And rec room of course haha.

  • My son is really set on getting one of these, am I better off getting the 128 or 256gb version?

    • +1

128 should be good, unless you are going buy lots of game from oculus store. At least I am good with 128 with games like ibcricket, moss, tennis 11, beat saber, golf, boxing, and many others

  • Expired 😬

    • Showing in stock now.

Edit: I see if you meant the promotional credit is no longer available.

      • Yeah the price is the same but no more promo for store credit.

  • Why was "This is part of Boxing Day Sales for 2022"? Surely should only occur on Boxing Day and after?

  • As someone who is considering getting one over the Christmas break, this really isn't enticing at all when you know how much cheaper they were, how long they have been out and the fact they will be superseded in the coming year.

    • And this is the best value well-rounded VR headset you can get at the moment, others are a lot more expensive, so you don't really have many choices.

      • Very true. I don't think I can bring myself to fork out that much for new so it will be second hand or bust.

        • One consideration if buying secondhand is warranty. I don't believe they are transferable from original owner.

          • @Borg: Fair point. Is that even allowed under Australian consumer law? I actually don't know.

  • Does anyone know - with the promo credit, does it all have to be used in one go?

Meaning - do I need to purchase a $200+ item to maximise it, or can I use it over several orders:

    Example,

    $50 on one order
$100 on another order a week later
$50 on another order another week later

Also if I use it on a preorder that doesn't ship until several months later (e.g. Sony PSVR2 for example), then I cancel the preorder, do I lose my promo credit, or will it be available for me to use on another order?

    • "with the promo credit, does it all have to be used in one go?"

In my experience no. But I have never gotten $100+ worth and all the promo credit's I have gotten usually had a minimum spend limit otherwise the credit didn't apply.

Usually all these details should be in the T&C's, but OP didn't copy paste them in the post. And the promo is over so I can't find them.

e.g. it will say $X minimum spend, or non refundable credit etc.

    • One you get the Credit, you can use it for multiple transaction till you reach the limit. For preorder, if you have placed the order it’s fine, if you will cancel the order then it will come back in Amazon credits
