  • Nice. Do people put heatsinks on these in their PC?

    • +1

Consider a heatsink mandatory for this drive to sustain write performance and also general drive longevity

      • Don't many motherboards include heat sinks for m.2 drives? Would they be enough?

        • +1

Yes - you can use the heatsink bundled with your mobo if it comes with one, or buy a seperate one like this

          • @Look Up: Hmm I installed this yesterday, so I should use a heatsink?

My motherboard has a heatsink, but only on the second m.2 slot, which I believe is the chipset one rather than the CPU one. I thought it would be better to connect it to the CPU one for performance

        • More than good enough. There is little difference between what comes in the mobos and the manufacturers ones. Save money and don't bother, if you really want buy those strip things you can replace between the drive and the heatsink, but it makes little difference.

    • +1

Odds are the MB will have its own heatsink - mine did at least.

  • Nice price on P5. With this capability, would it be too large to use as system drive?

    • nothing wrong with using a large drive as a system drive.

    • You could always carve off a small partition for Windows, say 200GB for the C: drive and the remainder as D: (or split it up even more if that helps you organise things).

  • 1 day too late…. :(

  • pretty sure this will work in a ps5 it just meets the requirements I think, just buy a heat sync and your golden.

    • Yeh just need a heat sink.. Fine for PS5

  • Hi , bit of off topic but any reliable external ssd drive you guys recommend for backups. 500gb is enough for my backups. Always had few ssd cards but don’t know if a drive is better? I guess it’s more secure than a ssd card ? Thanks

    • +1

SSD is better than SD card (because SD cards tend to have lower grade flash and flooded with QLC based NAND). A good external SSD is T7 Shield (note: T7 Shield is a lot better than T7). The BingLee eBay deal for 1TB T7 Shield is really good (except I think it is limited to NSW and pickup (or could be gone by now). OfficeWork's clearance on WD P50 was an even better deal, but those are long gone.

Hard to find a good 500GB external SSD deal because it still needs the same chipset and enclosure and the SSD maker generally wants a decent margin.

      • Great advice and nicely explained. I checked binglee and nothing in stock now. May be wait for boxing day sales. Thanks 😊

    • I like the 980 pros

      • For external SSD? Also, if you are really interested in Samsung PCIe gen 4 SSDs, wouldn't 990 Pro be a better choice?

  • +1

    $274 now.

  • I put this in my PS5 with a heatsink and it's reporting only 2000MB/sec :(

In my PC I get 6800MB/sec
