What's the VPN go to these days? My Surfshark is expiring in a couple months. Googling PureVPN I saw something about them lying about keeping logs (assisted FBI in a court case)

    • The Article. Sure, the guy deserved it, but if they are happy to keep logs on one customer, what stops them keeping logs on others.

I wish governments would put in legislation what VPN companies need to, and don't need to, keep records for, or release information relating to. Child porn, violence, etc I'm all perfectly on board with the police being able to get help with. Getting around nexflix geofencing? Yeah I'm perfectly happy to not help the cops with those cases! I do realise this is my personal line, but I believe they should come up with something, rather than all or none.

        • I get the organised and sickening element of what happens on the web, but the police have ways around it (just look at silk road for example). I just think companies need to be totally clear on what they are doing with the service I am using. I don't want to be tracked for downloading / sharing torrents or having big brother view (really anything) I'm doing. I use a VPN, simply for security and the fact I don't trust the government to have my data. Regarding legislation, there is a reason most of these companies operate out of countries with little to no legislation.

I also believe strongly that people should have the free right to view different sources to get information (like news) and not be blocked because the government of the countries you are in (ex. HK or my home country Russia) deems it to be not of their liking.

      • It doesn't sound like much of breach to me.

They claim to only keep connection/login logs only (user, location, server connected, time logged in). That was enough for the police to confirm it this nutter as all the police needed confirm was the logins from those devices they had tracked it the crimes to were him. What this guy did online was not handed over, they didn't keep logs of that.

Mullvad if you actually care about privacy, although pricey.

Honestly it you're just using a VPN for IP cycling then just use whatever has the highest cashback

      • Honestly it you're just using a VPN for IP cycling then just use whatever has the highest cashback

VPN companies are like religion, it's all just blind faith.

IMHO they're like religious organisations, crooks after your money promising you privacy, but you'll never know.

If you want privacy roll your own. If you're just after some privacy on public wifi, check if your router/NAS has the option & use that (routing back thru your house)

        • Fully agree. Even with Mullvad you can't be totally sure. Self hosting is definitely the best (and cheapest) option plus you get a residential IP

          • @rain-e: A self-hosted VPN? doesn't that kinda defeat the purpose of it?

            • @incipient: Depends on your use case. If you're just trying to get over a firewall (i.e. at library, work, uni) or just want privacy over an insecure network (i.e. cafe wifi) then self hosting is usually much more reliable, better quality, and cheaper.

Obviously if you're after switching your IP or changing the country your IP is then you're right in saying that self hosting won't work unless you pay for a VPS, which still is a good option however, if you know how to set one up.

    The details are quite scant.
    What plan is 100% off?
    1 month, 1 year. 2 years?

    • It doesn't provide much info. Scroll down the bottom of this page and it indicates some deals at 100% cashback. You may want to do some research if you are concerned about them keeping logs on you.

    • +3

The SB link goes to the 1yr deal for $23.88, so I'd guess that'd be the deal.. hopefully GYB will pop by & clarify..

      • +1

Down the bottom under "Top Offers"

The best deal I can see is "82% off for 2-year plan + 3 months free 100.00% Cashback 06/01/2023"

It's in a table and I have no clue who to add a table on here (tried before and I failed hard)

        • Ah i see.. I've msg'd GYB so hopefully they'll see it & clarify in here before early Jan

        • Doesn't look like you can take any offer other than the 1 year for 1.99/month. Other offers not available if you go to purevpn site by clicking on shopback.

          • @cycleri3: There is also a 5 years plan but not to sure of its eligibility :-(

I use pure vpn, I’m not scared that they’re gonna leak my use of illegal streaming apps to the govt. If you’re an average jo I think you’ll be fine.

  • +3

PureVPN claimed that it's use only virtual servers which located only in USA.
Good luck with your privacy within USA.
    Blessed is He who believes.

  • How is it feasible as a business model to offer 100% Cashback? They've even offered above 100% in the past.

Fwiw I bit with the above 100% Cashback in the past but after optus and medibank etc. Have been more concerned about where I give my data to.

Ps. For those that are considering getting purevpn… The speeds have been OK for data browsing. Haven't really tried streaming anything.

    • +2

dont think it really matters as long as any VPN is based in a country within the five eyes alliance, there could be potentially issues later down the track

    • How is it feasible as a business model to offer 100% Cashback? They've even offered above 100% in the past.

Same way companies give products to influencers. They're hoping for word-of-mouth referrals. But also they'll mine your data, since so many silly people think they're safer sending all their internet traffic through an unknown entity.

but after optus and medibank etc. Have been more concerned about where I give my data to.

That's a bit different as you needed to hand over that data to obtain the services.

      • +1

I think the business model is more like this …

Say 100% cashback and provide vague details and refuse claims for some reason or the other. Only a handful who are persistent would bother to follow up. Profit??

  • Hoping the 5 year plan will get 100% cash back. No coupon was used, just the offer popping up on the site. Its tracked already. Will see if I can query it. It seems almost impossible to send an early query on shopback now due to the chatbot gating contact with customer service.

    • Yeah I found it almost a worthless deal if it was for the one year only

  • +1

Would also like clarity on which plans are eligible.
    Cheers.

  • how are they for use in china?

  • +1

@gotyourback has ignored multiple PM's for clarification, so best leave this "deal" alone until.

If the rep won't respond, then customer support will be worse.

    • +4

Definitely not ignoring mate, I took a little bit of time off over the holiday period and am now doing my best to catch up on the backlog of comments, and DM's. Thanks for your patience.

As for this particular offer, my understanding is that any standalone VPN service offered by Pure will receive 100% Cashback, the add-ons (PureKeep, PureEncrypt etc) however will not earn Cashback per their terms. If there were different Cashback rates or exclusions for certain contracts, they'd be separated/mentioned in the store's page on our website.

      • +2

So what plans are 100% off?
1 month, 1 year, 2 years, 5 years are all 100% off if I read what you say correctly?

  • +2

Bought the 5 year deal for $116.37, hope it tracks

    • +3

Tracked for $111.28, wasn't 100% for me but $5 is no biggie for 5 years anyway

  • Make sure you click on the bottom option of the 5 offers which just says 'PureVpn'. It'll take you to a one year subscription, just hang around for 20 seconds or so and the 5 year offer will pop up. It'll take you to a new page but it will still be tracked by Shopback. That's how it worked for me anyway and currently pending in my Shopback account but confirmed by PureVPN.

    • Did you get charged $75 or so for the 5 year plan?

      • Yep, about $110 Aus. If it gets rejected, still happy with the price for 5 years.

    • +2

Then ShopBack will reject your claim after 90 days.

      • Exactly, the rep won't even confirm what plans are valid for cashback, which is not a good sign.
