For those of you who want to get 1TB version of this for $90 AUD, check my post. I don't understand why it hasn't hit the front page when there are 16+ votes.

Just to clarify, slightly difference between this deal and your 1TB.

This one is a 'portable' 2.5inch HDD requiring only USB power. It sounds like the other post is for a 3.5inch 'external' HDD.

Portable HDDs generally attract a slight premium.

NO, the one that I posted is 2.5" portable drive. It is USB powered. JB is selling it for $159 atm.

      • Just to clarify - the deal mentioned above is also for a portable drive.
With postage that 1TB deal goes for $100. IMO better deal.

Correction: amazon's deal is now about $100AUD shipped after price increase of 10USD. The price will fluctuate from time to time.

    • Yeah, but for $149 you can get the 1.5TB version from Dick Smith. In fact, this 500GB is the worst value of all of them and only useful for someone who needs only 500GB.
The 1.5TB is a bit bigger than the 1TB though.

      • Might be worse value, but if you only had $70, it's the best value.

      • -1

That 1.5TB isn't a portable hard drive, it requires constant external power.
This 500GB hard drive doesn't. It runs off the power of a USB, so it is much better for those people who are on the move with their portable hard drives, or do not have enough power points for another device. So it isn't comparable to the 1.5TB drives.

For portable hard drives, this is pretty good value.

Nop the 1.5 is still a portable drive and except it's a 12mm 2.5inch instead of the more common 9mm 2.5inch.

    • probably because this is a 2.5-inch drive, not standard desktop drive — my partner has me watching out for a mix of yours and this one at a decent price

wow if big co like jbhf can beat small retailer shops, those little shop really in trouble. i mean most people can find big co easily and (maybE) more comfortable dealing with them (warranty, product choices, etc)

What a strange comment. Big companies can almost always beat smaller companies on price on the same product due to buying power.

  • fchis they have a 1 year warranty vs 3 here in Australia. Also the 500gb and 750gb versions for the usb powered models are the slimmer ones and the 1tb, 1.5tb are the thicker models.

    • Has anyone actually used HDD warranty?
Don't know how you guys, but I treasure my data bit more than that. on the other hand not everything in the TrueCrypt file. Hence if the drive fail, I don't want to send it out somewhere out… Maybe I am just paranoid, but I had only one faulty drive and I basically wrote it off, despite being under warranty, for this very reason.

      • Yeh I have, with Seagate on a 500gb internal drive that failed still had over a year left on a 5 year warranty. Made a warranty claim on the Seagate website sent it to Seagate in NSW then they send it to Singapore where they repair the HDD and you get back a refurbished HDD. You lose all your data of course but in my case the drive was dead so I couldn't retrieve my data.

        • thats better than the warranty procedures for WD hard drives - had to send it to singapore out of our own pocket!

Havent bought a western digital hard drive since..

        • I second that — I had a 500GB Seagate drive that got swapped for a refurb green — wasn't too happy about that.

      • .

  • Any one know if i can convert this to be an internal HDD for my acer laptop?

    • +2

Why not just buy an internal HDD, you will find that they are cheap aswell.

      • My guess would be he wants to clone the old hdd in the laptop to the new external hdd and replace the old one using the external one. Without the external disk closure, he won't be able to complete the task.

Out of stock online but do a store availability search.

  • went to jb today to check it out in store, noticed them on a clearance stand
but the box said it was USB 2.0 and not the model number shown on the website
    is this online only??

  • Purchased one today, plenty of stock around but in store it is marked as $99. Got them to check the website and they matched the online price without problems.

Has happened like this before at JB, I think they are slow to update their website.

Probably the cheapest portable drive going around at the moment (with the exception of waiting for delivery from US)
