  • “Alexa, ask TP-Link to connect a new device to the network.”

      Alexa: I am not Siri

  • +2

Anyone who owns both the apple tv 4k and this nvidia that can comment on the nvidia's advantages?

    • -4

      It’s bigger

    • +5

I heard it up scales content to 4k. Might save your subscription fee

      • Do you have a apple tv?

        • i would say he doesn't I have alot 4k content on my itunes and apple TV 4k content looks amazing.

    • +9

Anecdotally, the AI upscaling is better on the Shield than the Apple TV, it’s more customisable in that you can install emulators on it etc. if you want, and probably a better overall option if you’re a power-user. The Apple is much more user friendly though and is a newer product, so it’s what I’d get if I were mainly just streaming from online services or heavily ingrained in the Apple ecosystem.

Speculation: Given all these sales, I think nvidia may be planning a hardware refresh of the Shield that supports AV1.

      • +2

More likely just for the boxing day sales.

      • +5

Hopefully they don't follow their recent GPU strategy. I don't much need a Shield Pro90 Ti with twice the juice, the size of an EATX case and 10x the price.

      • +3

The Shield TV Pro's AI upscaling makes it more than worth it. I'm astounded by how good it is. Far better than what my 2021 LG C1 can achieve. Most of the time, I don't notice the difference between 1080p upscaled vs 4K native.

    • +6

Don't have the Apple TV, but have multiple Nvidia Shields. The Shields run Andriod TV and allow side loading, so offer greater flexiblity. The AI upscaling, in combination with my amps upscaling make even h265 480p content look very clean on my 75" TV.

      • the problem is the Shield now is not as good as the shield 500gb version they had with a controller included that I still have and had to import from the U.S. back in the day. this is back in the day when you could buy stuff under 1000 bucks that were TAX FREE unlike now.

        • +2

+1 vote for reminiscing of TAX-FREE days

        • The 2015 shield doesn't support 4k.

          • @daitro: havee you tried a Nvidia Sheild Pro 500gb? it plays and screens all 4k content in 4k on netflix and amazon prime.
SOOOOO no idea what you're on about.

Depends what you have with it. Shield allows usb 4k remuxes including dolby vision from downloads. Apple doesnt have a usb port. Also DTSX and Atmos is playable if you have a AV receiver. Much more variety for apps and games. Has a backlit remote and a super fast OS. Upscaling is as good as a Sony TV. Shield is easily the better device. Depends how much of it you will use though

      • Wouldn’t you just watch content from a computer on ATV? Why transfer on a stick?

        • Like i said it depends what you use it with. Shield is the only one you can play full audio surround options with losless Atmos and DTS-X. Also why watch it on a monitor when you can on a big screen TV instead. Monitors and PCs cant recognise Dolby Vision because you need the licensing from them. But there are apps on the Shield which you can use it. Also streaming DV is not near the full bluray capabilities

Copied from a post of mine a few years back (I believe the YouTube app now supports 4K though?):

Advantages of Shield over Apple TV - expandable storage, local media playback, audio passthrough, superior remote, better app support (eg: Foxtel, Kodi), better Plex experience (supports Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, AI upscaling, has resolution switching, can run Plex server), better upscaling, supports interactive Netflix content / has up-to-date Netflix app, YouTube 4k, Dolby Vision for Amazon Prime, inbuilt ChromeCast, true 24fps, 30fps, and 60fps support etc.

      • No Youtube HDR :(

    • +1

I have both - basically android tv allows third party apps thats it.

    • +2

I had apple tv 4k. I own Nvidia shield. Nvidia shield has capability to play media with dolby atmos passthrough audio (i.e. play original quality without conversion). I returned apple tv as Nvidia shield was better suited for my home theatre.

      • So you noticed a drop in quality

        • Yes. I have 5.1.2 setup so the atmos sound matters to me.

          • @ozzyozzyozzy: 5 meaning the centre and front/rear left/right. 1 meaning Sub. And 2 meaning?

            • +2

@vinnychase: 2 is the height speaker channels. You basically get near double the sound output and so much more clarity with lossless, compared to streaming audio. Its almost like listening to a soundbar for streaming then going to a full surround system for lossless bluray audio.

    • +1

Shield can pass through all audio formats while Apple doesn't support any of the lossless formats. If you care about audio get the shield.

    • You can add Kodi to the Shield

    • I’ve got both. The nvidia has a few advantages

      • the ai Upscaling can work brilliantly with some content, but on others just looks like a sharpening filter.

      • Android TV OS vs Apple TV OS has its own advantages.

      • steam link game streaming works amazingly well. For some bizarre reason nvidia are removing their nvidia game stream app soon.

      • cloud gaming

      • old game emulators run amazingly well on it

If all you do is watch streaming media, the Apple TV is the better option imo. It’s smoother and the apps are better.

  • +13

Just be aware NVIDIA is discontinuing GameStream so if you're buying it to stream games from your own computer it may not work in the future.

    • +1

Yeah it is a shitty move by nvidia to get people to pay for their gaming subscription service.

Not as good to buy this as before.

    • I asked for one for Christmas as I wanted Gamestream. So glad Santa didn’t get it for me. I’d have been peeved off. Not sure what to use instead though. People say Moonlight.

      • +3

Moonlight app (on shield or other device) + sunrise running on pc. Both programs are open source.

      • +1

I have one and use Steam Link and works a treat, even works for non-Steam games (the only thing 'Steam' about it is that it automatically launches Steam Big Picture every time you connect, you can just close that and launch whatever you want.)

        • Do you notice any lag with the Steam Link? I've heard it's bad. But I don't know what it's like when using Moonlight.

          • @Pollywaffle: I'm running an Asus AiMesh (fancy mesh but with actual routers as nodes) connected to a Ac68u. My PC is wired and the Shield is about 10m away over wifi. I occasionally notice some compression artifacts, and I get the odd disconnect, but overall, it's decent, but will never be as good as a HDMI cable. (something I really should invest in for such a short distance.)

            • @scaryspace: Thanks for that. I have a 3M gap from PC to TV. The HDMI cable I bought was really laggy. If you know if a decent one, please let me know.

              • -1

                @Pollywaffle:

It's not the HDMI cable, it's your TV that's laggy. You should try setting it to "Game" mode and turn off all the processing.

              • @Pollywaffle: @Pollywaffle i bought the UGREEN 5m one recently. Zero lag and acheiving full 120hz constantly on my LG C1.

                • +1

@kazer: Legend, cheers. We have the same TV, too. I love it.

    • apart from having to add the game to the steam library, what is the disadvantage?

      • Steam link limits games to 30 FPS if they are non steam games.

  • -3

Never had flawless performance from TP-Link. Wasted time returning thier routers

  • How to get ip tv on Nividia Sheild ? Can someone explain in simple step by step approach. Thanks.
