First Month Free on Any 4G Mobile SIM Plan @ Aussie Broadband

310
TRYITFREE

I activated an Aussie Broadband Mobile service a couple of days ago, obtained via the now-expired https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/738719 deal. I got 4G as expected, as well as VoLTE and VoWiFi - all good. (They use Optus, so not so good in my case, but hey….. FREE!)

A little while ago I noticed that I'm now getting 5G, which was unexpected. I went to the ABB site to see if there was any explanation, and noticed that the First Month Free (new 4G mobile services only) offer is back, until the end of January. Enjoy!

(I'm still none the wiser as to why I'm getting 5G.)

  • This is my in-between plan while waiting for the JB Hi-Fi gift card deal again.

is it easy to cancel? wanting to give this one a try

    • I'll be porting back to Boost in a few weeks, before the free month is up. As such, I shouldn't need to cancel.

  • I want to move to a company that does Apple Watch support :(

    • I also want a prepaid that supports my galaxy watch

    • Your only options are the big three, then. You'll have to be on a postpaid plan and pay $5 for the privilege to use such feature.

If you're looking for a stand-alone number on the watch, currently Truphone is the only provider for Apple Watch Family Setup (i.e. separate number on the watch usually for kids). That would be either $10 pm or $100 annually.

I'd say when I tried out the Apple Watch cellular for the first 3 months a long time ago, it was indeed quite convenient. However definitely not to a degree that worth to switch back on postpaid plans and $60 a year for a watch that barely uses data nor connectivity IRL.

  • Anyone know how long I can wait to activate and port in? Can't find on ABB Site.

    • They will send you a sim card and it should arrive in 3-5 working days. You can then follow the instruction to activate and port in - mine took about an hour switching to the new network.

The T&C's for the previous (Black Friday) offer specially mentioned 60 days from receipt of the SIM card. There's nothing specific in the T&C's for this offer, so I assume that it defaults to 30 days from receipt, as per the second step of "3 easy steps for activating your new mobile SIM" if you scroll down a bit on their web site. On that basis, you could delay it until early March if you left it until the last day of the offer before ordering one.

In other news, the 5G that I noticed yesterday didn't last long.

      • Thanks for the info.
Gonna juggle a Boost $4 profit first, before using this.

so it is not prepaid its on a plan? do they do credit checks? do you need to show id when it arrives by post or to activate it? how does one cancel it ? do you still have to call them if you port out? do you get credit to call overseas?

so it is not prepaid its on a plan?

      Plan, yes.

      do they do credit checks?

I don't know. I don't care, so I didn't investigate. Someone in the previous deal said they don't.

do you need to show id when it arrives by post or to activate it?

In one of the e-mails from ABB it said, "Please note that a signature is needed for delivery", but I don't recall signing for it. The usual ID requirements are required for activation, but they get some of those from you when you order it.

how does one cancel it ?

I'm planning on porting back to Boost. To cancel it otherwise, I assume you'd just call them.

do you still have to call them if you port out?

      I wouldn't have thought so.

do you get credit to call overseas?

The $40 and $50 per month plans come with $50 International call credit. Rates: https://www.aussiebroadband.com.au/forms/other/international…

      • thanks for the info i think i get one for the intl call credit.

All of our plans are non-contract, so you can cancel or change your plan at any time if need be. We'd require a phone call for verbal confirmation of closure and we can have the service closed by the morning of the next day at the earliest after that

      Re the cancellation policy

  • Extended until 31/3/23.

EDIT: Looks like you can now select a 5G plan for the first month free if you want to. Previously it was only 4G plans.

    • I'm planning on using the 2 free months then porting back into Boost on a discounted $200 sim. Did ABB charge you when you ported out to Boost and did you have to contact them to tell them to cancel the service?

        No and no.

        • Hi mate,

If I need to port out of Aussie Broadband Mobile, do I need to give my dob or account number?
I'm confused whether this one is prepaid or postpaid.
          Thanks

          • +1

@tot: It's postpaid, so you'll need to provide the account number (Customer Number) when porting out. (DOB seems to be required regardless.)

            • @Colin2905: Thanks for confirming mate. I stuffed up my porting to Boost as I've mentioned ABB as prepaid. It's been over 72 hours and I'm not sure about the next steps.

              • @tot: I'm not an expert, but I'd probably contact Boost and get them to cancel the port request, then start again.

                • @Colin2905: Thank you. Yes, I'm planning to contact Boost on Monday morning to get this sorted. Hopefully all goes well.
