Tried one not long ago. Its nostalgia value wears off after about an hour of real world texting use. I gave it away, which felt good.

      I had a similar experience with a 8210 4G.

Indeed, can't imagine losing swipe keyboard and using numeric to type text like I have 30 years ago

  • +3

Biggest disappointment is that you can’t hotspot or tether data to another device.

      But

Seems to be useful for traveling.

      • Does it support WhatsApp? Essential for me when travelling.

No wifi is expected. But not even usb is odd.

      • the 8110 4g has wifi and hotspotting

    • +1

I was planning to use one for exactly that (essentially a cheaper travel router). Thanks for the heads-up.

i returned one back to amazon because i want a total dumb phone, no internet access, no games, can't uninstall any app

    • +4

      no games

      Snake

  • I love how people post these nostalgia pieces on OzB and somehow think people want to revert to the mobile communication capabilities from the 90s when they travel. So dumb.

Probably to avoid having their phone data cloned by customs, which happens in Australia and USA iirc

      • +1

V interested in that one, pls explain

        • +4

Australian Border Force can legally search your digital devices without a warrant. They normally ask you to reveal your passcode/word to your phone or device then take it into a seperate room so you can't see what they do to the device, whether this is search private information or clone the device, everything is unknown.

          • @stenchlord: Refusal results in gaol iirc

          • -6

@stenchlord: They have to have legitimate grounds to carry out that search, and yes if you are in an office with ABF looking through your bags etc I assume they are mildly suspicious and have their reasons. Like all elements of Government in this country their conduct is reviewable legally (and publically thru a free press), so their are checks and balances in place.

Those same search provisions have been used successfully to counter paedophiles and terrorists (added with organised crime/ drug importation and their you have 95% of the work).

Again, this is Australia, how many times have you been in that interview room? I'm assuming zero, and never will. In a country where a lot of the focus is on individualis and 'rights', there are always community responsibilities we carry where absolute freedom is restricted. We forget about these responsibilities all in the perception of intrusion, which is present is mild at best, or near minimal when compared on the world stage.

And yes, they can get into this and old phones, so if you're up to no good, maybe that's a warning that you will eventually get caught and a deterant for others to 'play nicely' and ultimately don't prey or take advantage of others.

@downunderblue: Having legitimate grounds is fine but they don't have to state to you or anyone what those grounds are. There's no accountability, if ABF personnel have a bad day they can abuse these rules to do what they want without any grounds and not be held responsible.

@downunderblue: Well they taken the free speech and thought from citizens in Queensland after the shootings.
So you can’t think bad of cops or government or spread info of their doings you are not happy off
They want you to dob each other
So if you don’t like someone now they give you a chance? Lol
I don’t know but we heard this happened last time was in 1940s

            • +2

@downunderblue: I would love to know of the specific cases where they have "counter" pedophiles and terrorists through this disgusting breach of privacy. I find it hilarious they always tout "pedophiles and terrorists" as the reason to introduce even more ridiculous bills further invade on our privacy and freedom.

            • +2

@downunderblue: I feel I should clarify as well.

While I don't agree with them being able to search a persons devices, I understand the need to in "some extreme" circumstances.

What I don't agree with is it:
              1. Not being regulated by a higher body (our judicial system, i.e. requiring a warrant).
              2. The device should be searched in front of the owner while being in a room that is being recorded to ensure should any issues arise or occur that the person being searched has some sort evidence that protects their rights and identity.
              3. Should any data be recorded, it should be noted (they don't have to say exactly what was taken) and they should have to state how long that data is kept and ensure the person that it will not be misused in anyway.
              4. They should never be allowed to clone a device for the purposes of surveillance without a judge issuing a warrant for it.
              5. Saying people have the "option" to not hand over their passcodes/word/biometrics with the choice leading to further detainment and seizure of the device is not an option, it's an ultimatum.

In 2016 a man was detained and ABF confiscated his phone and proceeded to respond to messages sent to the man and then deleted the evidence before returning the man's device back to him.

              https://www.smh.com.au/national/nsw/legal-action-after-borde…

"Separate documents obtained by Fairfax Media under Freedom of Information laws have revealed that it was a "counter-terrorism unit" officer that started reading the text messages on the passenger's phone and then responded to two SMS messages without the knowledge or permission of the passenger.

"The CTU officer then deleted those messages before the mobile telephone was returned to the passenger," the documents said."

This guy only found out after an internal review was done and it was discovered what the ABF officer had done but how many other cases go unrecorded or unreported due to no one else besides the ABF having access to these records.

              https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2022/jun/16/australia…

Between 2017 and 2021 over 40,000 devices were searched and no one besides the ABF know how many of those searches led to arrests and preventions of crimes.

What Benjamin Franklin stated is cliché but perfectly apt.

"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."

@stenchlord: very compelling argument. it seems like every government is trying to take away our rights.

                • +1

                  @shegeloaf: Thanks.

I don't want to seem like I'm arguing for no security and safety for people and passengers travelling abroad and home but within reason.
I don't believe we need to give up our rights, privacy and dignity in order to be policed in a fairly and just manner.
