Wasnt this 99 sometime this year? (Albeit pink/white from memory)

    • +11

      yup
Although no longer available I would not be able to bring myself to pay for something that was available previously for half the price.

That said. I found that it was barely worth $99 imho.

      • +1

Yes same here, bought one for the other half and the experience was…below average tbh. Even 99 was too expensive. Just imho

    • +1

Yeah I saw that $99 deal too. From JB HiFI I believe. Only for gold bezel colour though.

I paid $131 from Amazon AU for a different color (price was $142 and used $9 pick up point promo code).
Still happy with what I paid for the budget model.

Sorry too late to edit. My math is wrong.

  • +1

    Was $299

Average price on Amazon for last 12 months has been $257. Disregard the RRP.

      To give some more insight.
Shipped and Sold by Amazon AU.
The cheapest listing was $140 for a month leading up to Black Friday. I bought one and the price didn't change.
The same listing was then $220 during Black Friday/Cyber Monday.
Then went back up to $2XX and sitting around that price.

I bought one during the $99 deal. I wear it every day but be warned, you can't describe it as a smart watch. It's a great fitness/sleep/data tracker including apps for various activities. It's also good for viewing phone notifications without having to pick up your phone. But using it as a smartwatch isn't something that you can do.

    • +1

It was a good price back then… certainly not worth $199 now.

    • Depends on what you expect from a smartwatch I guess.
In my opinion a smart watch usually needs these three things.
      1. NFC Pay
      2. Answer calls on watch
      3. Reply to texts with your voice

The Venu SQ has NFC pay so I am pretty happy about that it's the main reason I got it. Heart rate/Sleep tracking second.

      • NFC is a start, but the bank has to be compatible too, so in my case, the watch doesn't support HSBC (a huge international/no overseas fee bank).

        • Yeah I checked the bank website before I bought, Garmin Pay was supported.

Can't bring myself to buy this watch when Garmin have released ones with a better sensor Elevate 4, and this watch has been much lower in price eg $99 many months ago. $199 is a rip off. I would buy it for $49.

Hoping JB have better garmin deals next catalogue.

I bought one when it was $99. Very reliable and I use it every day. One annoying thing that for Garmin pay, the passcode need to be restarted every 1-2 weeks. It's compulsory and I dont know how to stop that.

    • "the passcode need to be restarted every 1-2 weeks."

What? For me you enter passcode once after it's on your wrist (make sure it's decently tight, it uses heart sensor to detect) and you don't have to enter it for 24 hours or if you take the watch off your wrist. This also what it says in the user manual.

Do you mean you have to reset the passcode every 1 to 2 weeks? I have never had to reset the passcode, still using the same one.

    • I haven't changed my code since I've had it (Jan 21)

    • Or maybe you are entering the wrong passcode too many times?

It shows on the screen if you make a mistake, 2 tries left, 1 try left then if you get it wrong on the last try you have to reset the Garmin pay passcode.

If you are still having problems, you might want to try check for a watch update by plugging the watch into the computer with USB cable and using Garmin Express PC software. Maybe there is a major update you haven't installed.

      • I take the watch off at night? Could that be a reason?

        • +1

If you take the watch off yes you will have to enter the Garmin Pay code when you put it on your wrist next time.

I think I understand now, by "restarted" you mean "enter the same code again" if you take it off your wrist or after 24 hours? Yes that is normal.

Here is how it works for me.

          1. Watch is off my wrist
          2. Put watch on, swipe right on time to Garmin pay shortcut (you can set this shortcut in settings) to pretend like I am "paying".
          3. Enter passcode, wait until Garmin Pay shows working then swipe left to close Garmin Pay.

Now whenever I want to pay for something, I just swipe right and I can pay straight away and don't need to enter any passcode.

But if I take my watch off my wrist then I have to repeat this whole process again. Also after 24 hours I have to repeat this whole process again. So I do it at the start of every day just to prepare for using Garmin Pay.

Read the most thorough review possible from DCRainmaker who goes into way too much detail here https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2020/09/garmin-venu-sq-in-depth-…

  • How long tbe battery lasts when always on display turned on?

    • +3

Not long 2 maybe 3 days depending on use. If you want AOD stay away from LCD or OLED display watches.

MIP display is the only true power efficient type of display, it is always on by default. Another benefit of MIP is it is very easy to read in sunlight.
The memory in pixel display only uses power when a pixel is changed. When there is no change on the screen it basically uses no power.

Negative of MIP display is low refresh rate, some animation can seem a little choppy because of the lower refresh rate.
Also colour ones are limited in number of colours most of the time only 1 shade of each colour, red, blue, green, yellow etc no dark red, light red, dark blue, light blue etc.

Some MIP display Garmin models are Vivoactive 4, Instinct etc.

      • Appreciate that bro

        • Forgot to add to the examples.

Vivoactive (colour MIP) 4, Instinct (monochrome MIP) etc.

My sister has recently returned Garmin smart watch not sure the model because it has caused burn mark on her hand. I think it was the heart rate laser thing. So just calling it out here.

    • I wear my Garmin 24/7.

The extremely low power and green light wavelength of the LED's makes it very unlikely it was UV burn.

Likely irritation caused by salt/sweat/soap getting trapped under the watch touching her skin and rubbing. Or reaction to the nickel/back of whatever watch she had.

    • Far more likely to be a reaction to the nickel.

    • I actually experienced this too when I started sleeping with the watch for sleep tracking. But to be fair it could also be the third party Amazon watch band I use.

I don't think it is nickel reaction because there is no metal contacting my skin and area of the irritation was more spread out. Instead I think it is just chemicals from the plastic which is getting into my skin from the heat and sweat during sleep. I got it on both sides of my wrist so not sure if it is the cheap Amazon band or the Garmin. Or maybe both.

Pretty nasty rash that was slow to go away.
Anyway because of this I decided to give my watch and band a warm water bath to get rid of those chemicals. It worked I didn't get any rash after that.
