Google Pixel 7 128GB $49/ Pro 128GB $349 Upfront w/ Telstra Mobile Plan 100GB $69/Month for 24 Months @ JB Hi-Fi (in-Store Only)

910

While looking for a burner phone I came across this decent Telstra phone plan deal on the Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. It's a 24 month plan though so it obviously won't be for those OzBargainers who prefer a 12 month plan.

Google Pixel 7 5G 128GB $49/ Pro 5G 128GB $349 Upfront on a Telstra $69 plan for 24 months (100GB data per month, unlimited talk & text), minimum plan cost $1656 over 24 months. Ends 08/01/2023

P.s. you don't buy burners phones on plans. Defeats the purpose.

    someone please do the calculations

      • Dont know why downvoted, this is a funny comment

        • Because so many lazy _$#&ers around here actually wanted me to do the calculations and have no sense of humour.

    • +111

      Google Pixel 7 - ($69 x 24 months) + $49 = ($1705/24 months) = $71.04/month
      Google Pixel 7 Pro - ($69 x 24 months) + $349 = ($2005/24 months) = $83.54/month

With $10 port in credit from Telstra through asking for their billing team via live chat:

      Google Pixel 7 - ($59 x 24 months) + $49 = ($1465/24 months) = $61.04/month
      Google Pixel 7 Pro - ($59 x 24 months) + $349 = ($1765/24 months) = $73.54/month

After considering the base storage Pixel at full retail RRP and $10 port in credit from Telstra

      Google Pixel 7 - ($59 x 24 months) + $49 = $1465 - $999 = ($466/24 months) = $19.42/month
      Google Pixel 7 Pro - ($59 x 24 months) + $349 = $1765 - $1299 = ($466/24 months) = $19.42/month

Basically the 24 month 100GB plan only costs $466 or $19.42/month

      • What about phone cost with instant early termination charge?

        • +12

I would advise against it as the ETC itself is $828 (plus any Voucher Reimbursement Cancellation Fees (if applicable). They can only charge you a maximum of $400 for the Voucher Reimbursement Cancellation Fees

If terminating early, a Pixel 7 or 7 Pro would cost you $1228. Hopefully that’s correct, but happy for others to comment based on their experience :)

@BargainsGrabber: Damn might have to go the 6a @ $475 Bezos deal. Thanks legend

            • @abuch47: Is that deal an import? I'd avoid importing the 6a for warranty purposes.

              • @loinbread: yes it is, I canceled for the same reservations (and to save $7) but was gonna price match OW. Now ive decided to do the optus deal for the 7+6a for $1047 then sell one

                • @abuch47: Good plan. I got one locally and there was a hardware issue with the camera causing reboots, after going through Google Support (and several forums) I found it wasn't terribly uncommon.

          • @BargainsGrabber: Was that Voucher Reimbursement Cancellation a newly introduced fee?

            • @cheaptech20: I don’t think so. Believed it was there when the JB plans started. Not too sure if it was ever enforced

          • +2

@BargainsGrabber: Don't really understand the voucher reimbursement cancellation fees but early termination charge + once off phone cost as below:

            pixel7 $877 = $828ETC + $49
            pixel7pro $1177 = $828ETC + $349

which is not good value at all anyway

current optus deal you can get a 7/7pro + free 6a and cancel with one months plan cost

            pixel7+6a $1047.64 = $49 (one month cheapest plan) + $83.22 x 12 months (device cost)
            pixel7pro+6a $1347.88 = $49 (one month cheapest plan) + $108.24 x 12 months (device cost)

if you be bothered to sell one handset its probably just an all time lowest price for both options

This price with an unreliable slice of Telstra bandwidth that is allocated to Telstra resellers. Is it worth going with this, or would you rather go with Telstra direct?

        • +5

JB and Boost use the full Telstra network. It would be the same experience and network speed as to buying a plan directly from Telstra

      • +2

Both of these phones have been heavily discounted recently and will likely continue to be.

Working out the deal at RRP of the phones is being very generous to the deal.

Not only that, I though the whole "$10 port in credit" is far from guaranteed from all the comments I've seen on recent Telstra deals? So including that is also being pretty generous imo…

        • The success rate of port in credit on this recent deal was pretty high haha

Working out the deal at RRP of the phones is being very generous to the deal.

But yeh had to use RRP as it was easier to calculate rather than the fluctuation of sale prices :)

        • $999

        what discount is this?

        • Not a discount, but I deducted the RRP price of the Google Pixel 7 to show how much the JB Telstra plan would cost

          • @BargainsGrabber: Makes sense now.
In my head I was reading a base storage discount for Google drive haha

      • -1

No, it's $69 or $59 a month. The phone charge is a one off up front payment isn't it? Not amortised over 24 months.

        • The phone charge is a one off up front payment isn't it

Yes, it is still a cost associated that the buyers need to pay when signing up onto this plan

It is more accurate if I added the outright price onto the calculation, as this is what JB offers along with this new promo. Otherwise you wouldn’t get a phone when signing up and you’d be paying full price for the Pixel

You don't buy burners on a plan.

        • The phone is going overboard too.

Have a Pixel 7. Personally, not a big fan of it and would wait for a deal on something else. Some issues I've had:
    * Deleting photos from Camera app would freeze the app
    * Phone has black screened and had to be rebooted
    * Screen refresh rate randomly slows down for me (occasional, but often enough to be noticeable)
    * Camera isn't as amazing as the reviews make it to be - overly contrasty imo
    * Overall software/hardware seems below Apple and Samsung, despite this being Google's flagship phone lineup
    * Fingerprint scanner sucks

Your milage may vary but thought I would share my experience, rather than the starry-eyed online reviews that likely get commission from Google somehow. I'm probably switching to iPhone or Samsung next phone.

    • +6

Been using my new P7pro for about 1 month now but have had none of the above issues. Quite happy with the phone overall.

One thing I did have to learn to cope with (coming from galaxy note) was the lack of super fast charging. No battery issues for me with normal usage at higher display resolution, but the satisfaction of getting to 100% battery from 0% in <60min is something I definitely miss.

And yes, agreed that the online reviews make this phone seem way better than it is. I wonder if Google pays them off or something. If I had to do it over again, I would just buy the Galaxy S22 Ultra which would have been ~$300 more for me… Not much of a cost difference at $/day given that I use phones for at least 3 years at a time.

      • Interesting, thanks for sharing. I've been having issues with my Pixel 7 from day 1, but hopefully I am only in the minority. Just curious - what phone did you come from prior?

        • Had a galaxy note 10 plus. Screen broke and panel got water damage, but fully intact internals. I am going to get it repaired and keep it as a backup.

I had a 15 day window to return my pixel, but ended up keeping it, because I signed up to Google One for the extra 10% discount and also have a case coming in the mail 🤦🏻‍♂️.

        • Ditto:
Calls start dropping after 3sec (requires reboot)
Random crashing in apps (camera app main offender)
          Charging port loose and wobbly
Terrible coverage on 5G (disabled permanently now… sigh)
          Fingerprint is basically useless
          Android Auto problems
          Randomly reboots itself

The onl othery phone that was this buggy was the 6 Pro I traded in thinking this would be an improvement

    • +1

No issues with any of the above APART from the fingerprint scanner. Which absolutely sucks compared to my Pixel 5s scanner.. I was supposed to upgrade but damaged my pixel 5s screen..

90 I force via developer options all the time. Unsure if that may help you.

Actually I'd say the camera is a solid step up from the 5. A proper hardware improvement finally.

      • I'm with you on the fingerprint scanner issue. Man, I loved scanners that were either behind the phone, or side mounted. They worked perfectly. Wish they would make a comeback.

        • Side and back fingerscanner's are the best. I'm guessing this scanner is like an iphone (home button) shocking, I would never buy a phone if scanner was anywhere besides the two I mentioned

        • Honestly I would've bought the Zenfone 9 if it was cheaper.. Better form factor. Good cameras. Headphone jack. 120hz faster snapdragon. Great battery. Side fingerprint.

Though upon typing this.. Its price has dropped a lot?? Sub 900 makes it a steal at JB.. Damn. Used to be 1200?? Im sure..

    • Isn't the refresh rate slowdown intentional for battery saving?

      • I'd agree, my pixel 7 seems to only revert to 60hz on static screen or on navigation apps or other apps that have 60hz content.

    • Long time Pixel user (pixel 2, 5 and now 7 Pro), agree on the finger print scanner. I got a Google stand in a deal, and its a hit or miss with the sweet spot. And camera is definitely better but not the greatest, lack of modes is a dampener. Videos are better in the new release. Not had any of the other issues mentioned, always snappy. One gripe I have always had is with the battery, its pretty much the same battery as the pixel 2, drains on moderate usage with full resolution screen, although charging times have improved. If you're stuck without a charger, or take lots of photos on a trip, expect to run out half way through.

    • Pixel phones have never been perfect like some top of the line Samsung, LG, Sony models. From the start, they never used top of the range specs in processor, ram or camera. Basically what iphone and samsung bring with their latest phones, Google tries to match the specs after 8-12 months. Only thing good about these phones is Pixel Experience (original plain android) but even that is not that great now that Google apps have become heavy.

  • +6

I did some research a few weeks ago (looking at the Pro) and so many reviews were from people pee'd off with the issues and bugs with these new models (rightly so). Many stated they found it a downgrade from the 6 and a few stated they had returned their pixel 7's as they were so buggy. I'm not sure how long it will take google to fix these, but its still an ongoing issues and something people should research before commiting to 2 years with this phone.

Glad to read this post, now I don't have to torture myself with the "Will I, Won't I" in regards to getting this deal.

I looked at the camera performance comparisons for it on YT a while back and TBH I still feel like my Pixel 4 XL holds up comparatively well.

It's just… I finished my 24m contract a while ago and have now continued to pay for the $40 a month plan on a month-to-month with Vodafone and absolutely hate their service.

      • Cancel voda since you are M2M. And buy Telstra or Boost yearly sim

        • If I cancel the plan, then I lose the Vodafone number, so I have to be ready for another service provider to pick up that number.

    • +4

It was the same with the 6 though. After 6 months the issues will be ironed out.

Basically don't buy a google phone until at least 6 months after release.

    • I've had no issues this far. I've been a P7 regular owner for a month.its nuts that this phone is regularly between $750-$850. The only downside is the lackluster fingerprint sensor; which I'll happily deal with considering the 60z unergonomic base iPhone with overly warm photos costs twice as much.

Software has been buttery smooth, camera is a HUGE step up from the outdated 12mp sensor on previous pixels in video (most likely due to new ISP) and zoom (due to 12mp binning even at 4x). Battery has also been good for me since adaptive battery learnt my habits.

I did update the following settings re battery life:
      - 5g turned off, 2g turned off
      - developer settings, mobile data always active turned off

I'm surprised to see so many people complaining given the general consensus I've observed on the internet is that the pixel 7 is largely bugless compared to the pixel 6 launch mess. Having said that, people have ALWAYS complained on Reddit despite me always having had a great pixel experience.

  • +1

I should preface this by saying that I hate people who say “am I the only one who doesn’t have any issues with so and so phone”

But I see a few people mentioning their issues with their pixel 7

Partner got a pixel 7 pro for Xmas.

    Upgrading from her pixel 6.

It’s been amazing. No scrolling issue, battery life is better than my s22u on power saving mode, fingerprint scanner perfect even with glass screen protector.

It’s been nothing but great, but maybe that’s just compared to the pixel 6 that was a buggy mess

    • I went from a Samsung S10e and it was definitely different, some things software side seem like a downgrade over the Samsung but the camera/battery life and overall speed are all big improvements.
Think I just need to get use to this "clean" Android experience.

      • As a Samsung owner who's fed up of random reboots, laggy/blurry
camera, slow motion so choppy it's unusable, I'm seriously considering switching. So just interested what you found different and/or worse?

I use Nova launcher, so home screen should be no different if I continue with that.

        • +1

No manual camera controls, and just less customisation like you can't group apps unless it's on the home screen.
Overall I'm loving it but and would say it's a great upgrade over a S10 age phone.

    • Same here. Great experience so far (I came from a Mi 9T Pro so a definite upgrade).

    • I've had no issues this far. I've been a P7 regular owner for a month.its nuts that this phone is regularly between $750-$850. • I returned my pro after a week and went back to my S22U as it kept locking up every 24 hrs or so and required a hard reboot.

Was tempted to try again with the replacement unit but in the end decided to wait for S23U and see what Pixel 8 brings, hopefully more premium hardware.

    • They fixed many issues with an update.

  • Any legit reasons for buying a burner?

Can’t just run 2nd sim & vpn? Or MAC address etc is still a concern?

    • Both of your sims require ID to activate and would be logged with similar/same IMEI, a VPN can be sometimes unpredictable in regards to DNS when on a phone, mac addresses don't traverse out onto the wider internet, and tend to be randomised per wireless network.

Can't think of where it's particularly useful unless you want to leave your main phone at home and throw a brick through someone's window travel overseas with a clean phone. (Many borders reserve the right to just full out image your phone or deny entry.)

Would have been a great deal if it was 12 months plan….24 month is not a deal at all IMHO….

    • Yeah they use to give phones with 12 months plan. 24 months not worth.

    • I am considering getting this only because it has been some 6 months since the last time I saw a 12 month deal and even before that the 12 month deals were so rare. I'm not sure when I will see a 12 month deal again.

      • +1

To be fair the 12 month deal (see my post in this thread) was for a 8 month old phone back in June. Higher upfront but a 12 month plan option would've been good.

But yes maybe 12 month deals are a thing of the past.

  • +1

Galaxy Note 7 was the best burner phone. Too bad they all went up in smoke already

  • For reference, in June 2022 the JB HiFi deal was a Pixel 6 Pro for $399 on a 12 month $69 plan (with a $10 port in credit from Telstra on top).

GP6P released in October 2021 and then down to that price 8 months later.

GP7P released in October 2022 and this is the deal. Interesting price decay curve I guess!

PS: GP6P is probably the worst phone experience I've had in years. Very glitchy. Open to trading it for a Samsung Flip 4 even though the battery on those things aren't great.

  • New customers only.

I'm on Telstra now and ineligible - which sucks, given that I also get pretty subpar reception with Telstra (Geelong CBD).

    • You can just get a new service and swap over your existing number?

      • I’m always worried they’ll deny the request

    • I don't know if it's possible, but check if you can port out to another provider and then port back in to Telstra again.

  • +1

Any one know if there will ever be a 12-month jb hi fi plan? Rather than these 24 month ones?

  • Damn… I got the Pixel 7 with the $700 voucher for $69, 24 month plan on Boxing Day… any chance they'll refund me the difference?

  • What if you need 256GB?

    • Then you're SOL.

  • I'm currently with Belong, need a new phone so this sounds like a reasonable deal for me. I do need to port out and back in though, so any recommendations? Oor does it not really matter (as long as the short-term port is not on the Telstra network of course)

  • Says port in only so can't even get this with a new service?

  • Have to port away from Telstra for 30 days and can't get a new service so will need to get a $2 Vodafone Sim and port it in then sort out your Telstra number afterwards if you are already on the network.

    • How can you sort out your Belong number with this scenario?
Can Telstra port across your old number into your existing $69 plan to replace the $2 Voda one at some point?
I would also like to do this if it is possible.

  • Got the 7 and 7 Pro today. Tried getting the $10/m discount on Live Chat but no bueno. Should I try again another day? Ported in 2 x Aldi pre-paid sims purchase on the same day. Will do the change of mobile number dance soon.

    • Why didn't you ask them in-store?

  • Do JB do something like this for an iPhone 13?

    • I spoke with JB and they said they can provide a credit towards an iPhone under the $69 plan, but that it would not work if I was with Belong.
