You are basically getting 300GB/month for $39/month over a 2-year commitment.

    • +5

Might not value it that much given 10% is pretty common recently with JB, and even was 15% off not too long ago.

    • +5

No you're not, because you can't use the card to go towards paying off the plan.

      • +8

Oh absolutely, i thought $1,200 JB Hi-Fi Gift Card part was pretty clear so thought it would be redundant to mention that in the first comment just below the post.

    • +6

You are getting at best $3,336 worth of value for $2,136. If the phone plan is what you'd have gotten anyway regardless of the deal, then it's great. Otherwise it's still a pretty costly phone plan.

    • If you can get the bill waiver it’s $19pm ;)

      • What bill waiver?

        Edit: Ah, this

Just checked my Telstra bill, and I get a $20 "monthly mobile credit" already – JB must have applied it themselves. I signed up with the free Surface Pro offer.

    • Well it's actually $116/month over 24 months for 512GB S22 Ultra. Been trying to decide whether to wait for S23 Ultra or take this deal up for the S23 Ultra credit.

      So:

      $89/month over 24 months: $2,136
      S22 Ultra 512GB at JB Hifi: $1,848
      Less: $1,200 Store Credit
      $2,784
      /24months
      = $116/month

The lowest plan available on Telstra is $58/month, and to get the phone outright at Telstra is also $1,849. Which is $3,241 over 24 months or $135/month.

Good deal, I suspect this(S23Ultra) will come in at around $2,700 RRP for 512GB version (top end?, maybe pre-order deals happen) when it comes out, so that would come out at $62.5/month (24months) after taking out the $1,200 credit. So what i'd be effectively paying for an S23 ultra is $150/month for 24 months.

Its a good deal if you just want an S22 Ultra, but I will likely use the S23 Ultra for 3 years (for which there would be a greater discount on the phone itself). So I will wait for pre-order deals to come out.

  • +2

But you will spend that $1200 on a TV less than 48hours from now.

    • +7

If you don't have $1200 lying around to buy your new TV to replace a broken one but have $89 to pay the phone plan it's not that bad.

Borrowing $1200 for 24 months and getting a $39 phone plan costs more and gives you less than taking advantage of this deal.

      • +1

To be fair though a $39 phone plan is on the high side if you don’t have $1200 sitting around (unless you’re using a fair chunk of that 300GB data)

        • +6

Someone like me who hotspots for everything and doesn't have NBN, its not bad

  • +6

    300GB a month?

Unless its a replacement for home internet, I think I'd find it hard to be out of range of WiFi for 300GB of my monthly usage.

    • +2

Great for those who have to commute long distances by train who like to watch shows/movies.

      • +11

Going by Netflix's bitrates, thats almost 200 hours a month of HD content. Jesus thats a long commute.
For anyone doing 6 hours a day of commutes, uninterrupted, including weekends. I salute you.

        No thanks.

        • Netflix says 100 hrs or less with the highest quality on a mobile device.

Like you said if you have internet at home or work it's probably not a good deal but for those that don't have it and need to get something for $1200 or more now it's a good deal.

          • @TightLikeThisx: Sure at FHD, and Tablet users might opt for that, but tablets are less common; and HD at 6" is a shockingly high PPI, which is why I assumed the example was likely phone users.

Anyway; yep, replacement for home net/tethering seems like the only sensible use case for the vast majority.

        • Plus: You are not guaranteed good signal while commuting.

          • +1

@solacens: Has everybody forgotten that you can download the Netflix content in advance on your phone via wifi and do not have to use mobile data?

            • @techno2000: Then why not do it with network in your workplace instead hmmmm.

              • @solacens: Your employer lets you watch netflix on the work wifi?
                Any jobs going??

    • +1

Yep. I used to think I needed 15-20GB a month until I put my phone on low data mode and got a 150GB / 12-month SIM for $120. I still have 60GB left, and the plan expires in mid-January.

    • +1

LoL I can't even consume 500 GB in a year even with WFH tethering

      • Yeah I have realised that I just dont use that much data. Im an avid consumer and over the last 4 months, Ive used around 20GB and I dont particularly scrimp.
I am just going to grab Telstra PrePaid long term so I get the Telstra Access but not paying so much over the year.

  • how to be applicable for existing Telstra customers?

    • Leave them, then port back in. Same as always.

      • Cant you just get a new service with a new number then port over your existing Telstra number?

        • Apparently so; thats new…

          • @MasterScythe: Can confirm this has been the go for over a year now

          • @MasterScythe: I've done that for 3 years in a row

            • +2

@RangaWal: Can you please do a step by step process to take advantage of this offer if you are an existing telstra customer off contract. This is double Dutch, very confusing.

              • +4

@leakysub: 1) Buy and activate sim with credit (I got an Amaysim $12 Sim half price at 7eleven for $6) which gives you a new number.
                2) go on Telstra app and cancel existing plan (I did this while in JB)
                3) if single SIM phone, have the new number in your phone at JB and port new number for this deal at the phone counter.
                4) receive new plan, gift card and Telstra SIM
                5) if you want your old number back, after you're up and running message the team on the mytelstra app
"Hi, can you please arrange an fnn change from my current number *********** to my old number ***********?"

                Done

                • @disrupt3r: Can't we just get a new Telstra number at JB and then message the team on the mytelstra app
"Hi, can you please arrange an fnn change from my current number *********** to my old number ***********?"

              • @leakysub: Just take up the new plan as a new customer, then contact Telstra and get them to swap numbers between the new plan and your existing plan. Once confirmed to be working, cancel yoour original plan.

  • +2

Can confirm you can just start a 2nd number then swap with your existing number and cancel accordingly.

    All done in store.

    • thank you so much

    • +2

Which store did this for you?

    • Didn't work for me they are saying there is no way they can do it. Too much effort signing up to a new provider and getting it sorted over with a toddler haha

  • +8

    boring

  • +1

Signed up to the $99 plan for $1400 credit from last deal. Spoke to telstra chat and they gave $10 credit. Still thinking if this is a better deal than what i signed up for..

    • You’d be saving an additional $40 on this deal ;)

      • Yeah i figured.. now just wondering if i can or should cancel and get this one..

        • +2

You'll be paying the cancellation fees on this, really want to risk paying $1400 back to save $40?

          • @JoeBogan: Well i am in still in cooling off period so won't have to pay any cancellation fees.

            • +1

@XedeX: There is no cooling off periods for contracts lol

              • @JoeBogan: Thats what you think.. lol

                • +1

@XedeX: Go ahead man try getting out of the contract due to a cooling off period, I'd love you to post the outcome of that 😂

              • @JoeBogan: There are, so long as he was 'offered' it, not requested it.

                https://www.telstra.com.au/support/mobiles-devices/cooling-o…

                • -1

@MasterScythe: Dude it says "on some sales" and the 10 business day cooling off period applies if Telstra contacted you with a sales call.

OP going into a JB to get on a contract with Telstra is not the same thing. Source? I used to work in JB putting through these Telstra plans so I think I'd have a better idea about these things…

                  • +1

@JoeBogan: Sorry, I misunderstand, what about working at JB makes you think you have a better idea?

Honestly It sounds like JBs legal team didnt train staff well for contract negotiation; because its any uninvited offer that falls under the cooling off cause.

                    https://www.acma.gov.au/understand-your-telco-contract

If anyone approaches you with a sale; its shockingly hard to prove if the customer asked, or the sales clerk advised/advertised.

Speaking as someone who negotiates acma contracts as part of his career; its cheaper to just let the customer win, than to try and prove to the ombudsmen you didnt advise/advertise.

Dont forget, its an average of $8k for Telstra to fight an ombudsmen complaint, even if they prove they were correct.

So to argue with an individual contract withdrawal where there is any doubt, its usually significantly cheaper to settle.

however, If hes outside the 10 day window? Then hes out of luck.

    • $10 credit is per month?

      • Yes

        • How to get it? Before porting or after porting? Thank you

          • @ozrekeno: Telstra Chat. Ask for 20

          • @ozrekeno: After porting.
            Talk to telstra live chat

            • @XedeX: Im interested. Is $10 or $20 credit per month part of an existing offer? Does that mean $89-$20=$69 per month?

              • @Brakus: Same wanna know too.. but shouldn’t we talk to jbhifi instead of telstra to get the discount since the deal is offered by jb?

              • +1

@Brakus: Can't confirm $20/month. But when i spoke to Telstra chat and asked for the $10 credit, they asked where did i hear about the credit. I told them JB rep said i could get $10 credit if i sign up and ask from Telstra directly.
So yeah $99-$10 = $89/month for me. But now i am regretting that i should have asked for $20/month. Lol

                • +2

@XedeX: I spoke to chat before porting in just to be safe, asked for $20, after longgggg 45min chat&wait, they did confirm the credit discount will apply from $99plan - either $10/$20. In my case, $20 confirmed. Have captured the conversation to backup if i end up switching.

                  • @nobbobb: Would that be $20 off the $89 in this case (which makes it $69) or only off the $99 (which makes it $79)?

                • @XedeX: How long after activation did you ask?

I asked on the same day I activated my account but was told as it’s Jb hi-fi they can’t change it.

                  • @Hirolol: Next day after porting in. They told me the same initially. However, they said they can apply credit if jb offered credit when i signed up. I told them yes, and then they approved it.

  • Is there a way for me to take advantage of this if I'm an existing boost customer? Kept putting off porting out in anticipation for this deal and now it's here and I'm still on boost ( expires tomorrow as well lol).

  • Now I can buy my dji Drone

  • Is this contract with Telstra directly? I've got a smart watch which needs an e-SIM from a post paid plan.

  • +2

    No 69 plans?

  • get this with the $20 port in bonus, down to $79 if you call telstra beforehand, I managed to still get it after porting over but was much more difficult

    • Call beforehand and say what?

      • +2

tell them your friend got a port in bonus and you would like to as well, get a reference number, I tried about 3 times on the online chat. But you can call their sales team, and tell them you are going onto a $99 plan even say you are coming from optus due to the data breach or something, as long as they offer it to you. Then once you have ported over, just give them a call back or via online chat, give them the reference and have it applied to the account.

        • +2

Took me ages. I took down a reference number of them agreeing before I signed up and, when it wasn't applied, was told the reference number was incorrect.

Luckily I took screenshots but still took me several followups and arguments that my signing up for the plan was on the basis of their preagreement to the credit before they honoured it

    • +1

Well they never gave me the $20 p/m if when they said they would before hand. 🤬

  • +4

When’s the elusive $49 deal coming hey

  • I got 79 month, 1000GC last time, no more with 10 credit by Telstra after talking to different person

  • Any thoughts on whether I should snap this up now (use the gift card for the Samsung S23 Ultras in the next 2 months) or wait for a potential pre-order deal for the S23Us? Either way I'm fine with a 24mth plan, just wondering what OzBs thoughts are on this deal vs later pre-order deals?

  • I am an existing Telstra customer.
Can someone please explain the steps to claim $20 port.
    Thanks in advance.

    • Pot out, wait 30 days. Port in

      • Offer closes 28 Dec. Can't port out and wait 30 days before Dec 28. What if I open a seperate Optus account then port in?

        • Just get a new number with Telstra and then ask them to swap it late r

  • -3

all they need to advertise is that there not Optus and they won't sell your data to the highest bidder.

    • +4

      there not Optus

      they're*

  • Where can you see 89$ a month on catalogue I can only see $99 and you get 1200 gift card? Also do I contact Telstra live after I sign up to get the port in 10-20$ credit ? Is this for private and buisness ? Thank you

    • When they sign you up the plan is $99 a month but then telstra apply a $10 port in credit. This means after 2 years the price per month reverts back to $99 a month. It's worth checking worth the sales consultant about the port in credit.

      • That port in credit is one of payment $10 or $10 off each month ?

  • +9

I feel like you have to twist yourself into a knot to justify these deals. Might feel sweet when you get your TV. Fast forward a year and you are forking out 90 a month to use a phone.

    • Esp when the novelty of a new tv wears out

      • Agree.
If you can't afford a new phone or TV, maybe save up for one instead of committing to another liability in addition to your financed Mercedes/BMW, house, multiple credit cards, so on and so fourth.

      • Or when the novelty of a new TV kicks in and you’re kicking yourself for being ‘locked’ into a contract.

        • Yep, life on loan mentality.

    • If people pay for contracts, this is a great contract. Do you expect a $1200 gift card and a contract for 3 months? lol

    • But if ur gonna get a new phone or sth.. it’s a massive saving .. this deal is only $40 per month for 300gb..optus gives 30gb on $49 per month..

      • +3

Who uses anywhere near that amount on their phone though. It's almost some arbitrary amount that they made up to sound like lots of gig to create percieved value, knowing most people will only use 10% of it, while also keeping it small enough not to replace real internet usage.

        • +3

independent thought alarm It must be the coloured chalk!

Seriously though, you're bang on on perceived value. This is exactly what they're doing
