Amaysim deal seems like far far far better value given that it does come with unlimited calls and texts. You can't do much at all with 300MB these days, especially when stretching it out to about 1.6MB/day.

    • +2

The 12 months at $60 with amaysim gives no data.

      • +17

I know, but as I said you can do barely anything with 300MB. The value of unlimited calls and texts seems far better than 300MB data.

      • Could you please share the link for 60$ for 12M Amaysim? All I van find is 99$ forst year and 120$ from next

      • If it's "no data", would MMSs still work ?

( in other words, does Amaysim offer MMSs, but not data? )

    • +2

I'd say this is far far better if you need a little bit of data, such as a GPS tracker or kid's watch.

  • +25

Wow 300MB, how generous of Telstra.

    • +16

A plan suits pre 2010 use.

$5 a year plan here, saving $25 plus 6 mths longer.

      • Of course, I agree but this would suit someone who also wants to keep the Telstra plus. Or is there a cheaper way to keep the Telstra plus?

        • +8

You don't need an active service to keep Telstra Plus. I have it with the last active service in 2019.

          • @Neoika: Cool, thanks I’ll amend the description then.

          • @Neoika: Do you keep your points too?

            • +1

@Drifta: Yes, and can still earn them through other ways.

              • @Neoika: Great, thanks. This is perfect. Considering leaving for a while and returning as been a customer for nearly 6years and now they're refusing to upgrade my modem and offer the new plan credits intended for new customer. Called a couple times with no luck but have heaps of points I don't want to lose.

I may not return either if happy with new providers service

      • Or paying extra for the $99 Aldimobile super pack would be worth it for unlimited calls and a usable amount of data. I assume you have to switch to it on the website/app because it hasn't been a Special Buy since June 2021 (previously sold far more regularly).

    • +5

At 300MB every six months you should be able to update your iPhone within two years.

    • +2

You know, it's pretty useful for those elderly to check-in on covid app. Maybe 2 years late or for the future.

    • Even BigPond gave 200mb/month of adsl data in the early 2000's!

  • If $30 for 12 month, I will get one.

    • $5 a year Vodafone plan above.

    • +6

Aldi $5 for 12 months (Telstra network).

      • Got no coverage for aldi sim

      • and $10 at amaysim too.

      • Aldi is good for us oldies who mainly need a cell phone to receive SMS authorization codes.

  • Can you buy any of their $30SIM cards and activate this plan or does it have to state its the casual plan? Thanks

    • Yes, when you click on the link it takes you to the $30 sim kit.

  • +3

What is the use case for 300MB/6m?

    • +2

      IOT device perhaps.

      • +2

        IOT without WIFI connection?

        • +1

That's the whole idea - IOT in remote areas that still have some mobile coverage

    • +2

      Perfect for mobile POS

      • How much data would that use though? Under 50mb a month?

        • +1

Easy, it just send the card payment data which is usually just a few kb

    • +7

Forces you not to use the Internet so that:

When you use the mobile, you cannot visit OZBargain so you cannot buy toys that will end up collecting dust. You will save more money.

    • Maybe google map lite (download all the maps before hand)

    • +1

Kid's watch with calls/texts and data just for the tracking

    • +2

      1) In a spare phone when travelling around Oz for when you don't have coverage, but need coverage for emergencies.

      2) Remote IOT devices, such farm sensors (gates, dam levels, rain, etc)

      3) To get access to Telstra customer deals.

    • +1

70 yo++ granma grandpa; thanks OP, got 2.

      • Yeah I suppose if they are 100% at aged care they can use the WiFi

        • incorrect. 100% independent and use WeChat & Whatsapp when they're outside shopping.

          • @[Deactivated]: How do you limit a smartphone to only allow specific apps data access?

            • @reactor-au: i don't. I asked them to turn off Mobile Data when at home.

  • +4

If receiving SMS is free while roaming, it would be a great option for people who live in overseas (expat?) but also want to keep an Australian mobile number (e.g. receiving e-banking security code)

    • +3

Aldi sim is better for that. $5 for a year, then minimum $15 or so top up for another year.

And their billing and monthly package setup can also help save a bit more if you return for a month.
Rather than purchase a monthly package directly, you can top up the PAYG, and use that credit to purchase the package.
So hypothetically, you could top up an extra $1 above the monthly price, and that credit would remain active for another year.

      • +2

Agree. I use this Aldimobile Pay As You Go Plan for a watch. The only cost is a $5 initial starter kit purchase and $15 recharge annually, as have never used it for data or outgoing calls or texts. Credit lasts 1 year and on recharge that year is extended, so unused credits are retained if user keeps recharging before their expiry. Rates are Standard calls $0.12/min Standard SMS $0.12 $0.05 per MB of Data. IMHO good for extremely low or zero use cases, e.g. no or minimal outgoing calls or data use, mainly used for incoming calls or texts.

  • Get boost deals from cashback

  • Vodafone, Optus and Amaysim maybe useless in some area.

    • +4

You left out Telstra. It's useless in some areas too.

      • +1

Yeah. The misunderstanding so many have about networks is laughable these days. Brand bashing on coverage is pointless, its not 2010, know your use case and areas and go with what works for you. We usually try to have 2 different networks to minimize issue which worked well at a recent weekend away we had where boost (telstra) coverage was shocking (could hardly even browse) but vodafone was tolerable (could do basic streaming).

  • +1

Wow that great. Need a sim that has reception in certain areas for work. Will be grabbing one when my 6 months woolies expires in 40 days

  • +2

Looks like it was $15 just a few days ago

    • Yes, the website shows it expired on 28 Dec. The $30 28-Day SP can be activated for the 6 mths plan too.

    • Just look for half price $30 in coles/Woolies etc.

  • +1

About 10?? years ago a $30 starter pack from the evil empire would give us 300mb over 30 days.

Then each month after that another 300mb.

So its come back to that but over 6 months on this new 6 month thing.

    evil evil evil

    • 10 years ago, Tel$tra was doing $30 for 6 months with zero included data. That 300MB plan per month 10 years ago is now 10GB per 28 days.

Cost effective 12 months plans have gone up in price though.

      • +1

Sol Trujillo and his amigos were not generous

    • Surprised these plans still exist. Worked for the evil empire roughly 10 years ago. The amount of old people and kids I'd see get put on these overpriced low data plans and then come in with ~$500+ excess data costs(and be forced to actually pay it) shortly after were truely mind boggling. Even many 3rd world network providers have wiped away plans like these.

      • In the early 2000s, a few third world countries i know of had unlimited calls

  • -4

Hardly a good deal…i pay $15/ month through Optus for unlimited calls text and 3Gb/month and i know its not the best plan around but its cheap and is all i need. Tesltra are just thieves and con artists.

    • +1

How are they con? This plan is $5 a month ($2.50 if you buy half price pack). Your plan is $15 a month. As I said it will suit light users who want Telstra.

      • +1

Fair call….i misread that being $30 a month…still wouldn't use Telstra even at $5/month, they will sting you on going over your limits or some other detail in the fine print.

        • i pay $15/ month through Optus for unlimited calls text and 3Gb/month

Belong Mobile is $15 per month (after the 1st month) for unlimited calls text & 5Gb/month + data rolls over. Not to mention the first 4 months is only $27 using this deal.

    • The only reason I can think of to get this deal is if the person wants the cheapest way to have an active Telstra Plus account (but not willing to spend on Boost).

Being able to buy an iPhone 13 for ~$999 in July 2022 (could be less if you have decent amount of Telstra Plus points) and some occasional good deals could be tempting.

It is also discounted for $15. There is still an advantage of having a Telstra SIM, when you are in a remote area, at least people have a decent chance to still contact you.

      • Does boost $30 sim give you Telstra plus account?

        • +1

My Telstra Plus account is still active and I only have Boost mobile (and the 2FA is linked to that mobile). Years ago, every recharge on Boost gets you Telstra Plus points, but Telstra closed that loophole already.

    • +2

i pay $15/ month through Optus for unlimited calls text and 3Gb/month and i know its not the best plan around but its cheap

Certainly not the cheapest and 3GB/month isn't that good. Woolies' 100GB for 12 months @ $150 (using Telstra network) and you get 10% off your grocery shop once a month.

      https://mobile.woolworths.com.au/plans/long-expiry-plans

I'm pretty sure other resellers of Optus mobile would have even cheaper plans.

  • Does this allows data sharing with other telstra plan? If yes, then will chuck this in ipad.

    • +1

I don't think telstra allows data sharing esp with prepaid. I could be wrong

  • +4

Been using this plan for my watch that only accepts esim.

    • +2

      Really. Nice

So just activate esim directly on samsung/apple watch

      • +1

You can on wear os watches (with some work arounds) and use prepaid plans , never tried on Apple.

    • How much data do you end up using?

      • I hardly stream music, I always have downloads enable when connected to WiFi (charging) only. So never used more than 300mb

    • That's awesome. I'm not sure if there are any other options that provide e Sim…

    • how do you get it in eSim mode? I presume it comes with the physical card…

      • You can then chat to Telstra I believe or just do via app after you have registered.

  • 300mb for 6 months? A casual user would use more than 300mb each week.

    • Not when I'm WFH on the Wifi

  • Great for dial Sim and need good reception

  • +1

Great plan to park your main sim just to receive calls, sms. Sometimes, Vodafone $40 starter kit is on sale for $5, buy this sim and activate as pay as you go plan for a full year for $5.

  • Does this plan come with telstra wifi calling enabled?

  • Good for Apple Watch?

    • If you want a separate number to your iPhone.

      • +3

I don’t mind. I just want a new number for my son’s Apple Watch (cellular) that he can receive phone calls and leaves his phone at home.
