  • Pretty sure this deal ends on the 4th January

    • +1

My contact at JB says 8th

      • +5

My bad - my contact has come back and said it actually ends on the 4th (today) after I confirmed my order.

  • Is the upscaling legit enough for it to claim 4k? 120 motion rate on the official spec sheet, assuming this is 120hz?

    • I doubt if it’s 120hz

    • +1

      Where does it state 120hz?

Just got Samsung The Premiere Laser 4K Smart Projector Price match with digital cinema for $2999 free extra JB Hi-Fi Minimum Voluntary Warranty

    • LSP9T ot 7T?

      • Should be 7T , I saw another one sell more than $5K

    • Price match who? Wondering if I should just go triple tech now or stuff around with older tech

    • free extra JB Hi-Fi Minimum Voluntary Warranty

      whats included?

      • Extra 1 year + 6 months warranty

I just bought this is the boxing day sales. Absolutely no complaints except that it's bigger than I expected. Looks great projected onto the wall, don't even need a screen (though of course it would look even better on a screen). Picture/colours are crisp and sound is good considering the price point.

How's the gaming on this? Any lag between your game controller and movement on screen?

      • +1

Unfortunately can't help you there, haven't done any serious gaming on it yet!

Is the sound from these good enough, or do they need an external soundbar?

    • +1

To really enjoy movies you'll need a soundbar IMO

      • +9

        Or seperate speakers….

Incredible waste using this on a wall, without hifi equipment.

        • +3

Yep, a general rule of thumb for setting up a good home theatre is to spend about the same amount on audio equipment as video equipment.

        • +3

Yeah sorry that's what I meant. Some external speakers/amp setup. The built in stuff won't be enough

This deal is going on for a while. I bought this for $1795 in mid December with the 10% off

    • +1

Where did you buy it from? I am keeping an eye on this one and jb only dropped the price to 1995 on 23 dec i guess. I bought it for 1958 after negotiations.

    • why didnt u post deal ??

      potentially ending tonight

      • I wasn't sure if it was worthy of posting at the time. The price has been the same for nearly a month

  • +17

To the above also got with the extra 10% off so 1795 and then used some Coles and aldi bought deal discounted gift cards so brought end cost lower. Luckily found 120" ALR screen for sale used, so all in about $2k. Paired with a HW-q950a Atmos soundbar set and pretty impressed. Haven't fully got set to the screen as my wall seems to not be flush and not yet set up TV tuner. Have a dedicated room with no windows so lumens hasn't been an issue.

    1. Has Vidaa 6, which seems OK, implies very recent model. Left set is vidaa4 so circa 2019 model.
    2. Menus seem to allow voice control from Alexa, google and Hisense - haven't set up yet
    3. Great colours, better than my previous 4k BenQ projector and optiworx screen.
    4. Still playing with motion correction or not (only 50/60hz refresh even though says HDMI 2.1), bit feel motion could be better (compared to 2019 Samsung 75q75r qled full array TV
    5. Remote has no lighting, so hard to see what doing in dark room
    6. Only 2 HDMI inputs. Writing on them seems to imply they are different, but haven't tested yet as to if they are
    7. Seems to show when Dolby vision signal received. Very rare to find Dolby vision on UST yet.
    8. Reference viewing so far has been too gun maverick. Amazing.
    9. This seems like Australia got first release of this projector as sounds like it is launching in Europe just now. Looks to be going for over $3k AUD based on gbp and eur pricings.
    10. May be a higher lumen model to release soon as well based on the Europe focused articles.
    • +1

Thanks mate for the review, only question though how did you manage to get it for 1595? When was the 10% discount?

To the above also got with the extra 10% off so 1597 and then discounted gift cards.

      • +12

Sorry was typo I think I now corrected. Think it was 10% off of 1970 (asked the JB person for best price, not much off but something) to be exact, so that would be $1773 Then had like 1000 of discounted gift cards.

        A couple other comments
        1. First tried with my 130" optiworx screen. In darkened room, projector still able to fill the screen. Pretty good quality, but noticeably better once with the 120" ALR screen. Also, you can tell by the amount of light reflection onto the ceiling as to the difference.
        2. Yes can support from like 80 to 130nscreen, it lists 90 to 120. There is a menu setting to set the screen size.and type and also a digital focus setting, but not really sure they do anything noticeable.
        3. If you get an ALR screen, be very careful handling it. I bumped a very small area in upper left and the tensioned screen now has a small bubble. Really only noticeable in white scenes, but ticks me off just knowing it is there. And something about screen or wall not being flush and humidity in that room has waves show up at times on screen. Like getting something really nice for super cheap then messing it up in the deal transit process (got screen for 350 plus 75 Bunnings can rental for what the seller printed to as 3k ALR 2C screen from JB)

        • -1

Thank you for the details, could you share more about where to buy the cheap ALR screen? thanks

        • Still a good deal you scored there. When i asked the jb rep, he was like it is already half price can't go lower than that. If you don't mind me asking, which state and store you bought this from?

any chance of a pic of the final setup with a dark scene from a movie/show, I'd like to see how dark the blacks are?

Also does ALR screen worth the extra money?
I found this Elite 120 inch from Amazon for $900+, is it good enough for only watch at night time?

          • @FlyingPanda99: That Elite screen is NOT a UST screen, useless for UST. The cheapest you will find an Elite 120 inch UST screen for is $2699.

            • @skysurfer: Is alr and ust screen the same thing?

              • +2

@montorola: A UST screen is a screen with a special surface structure that reflects the light from the projector below it into the middle of the room to the viewers eyes. An excellent side affect of that is the screen REJECTS light from above it, which does make it a type of ALR screen, and more specifically a CLR (Ceiling Light Rejection). These two properties provide most (but not all) the benefits of a UST screen.

A standard Ambient Light Rejecting (ALR) screen is definitely not a UST screen. A standard ALR screen rejects light from the sides and/or above and/or below, depending on it’s intended purpose. The one thing it always does is reflect the majority of light from a medium or long throw projector back into the room and hence in the direction of the viewer where it is required for the best image quality. It will mess up the image from a UST projector, not enhance it. This type of screen is what somebody familiar with screen types would call an ALR screen.

            • @skysurfer: That is too expensive, any suggestions for below $1000? and is there big difference between cheap and expensive one? thanks

              • +1

@FlyingPanda99: Sorry, don't know where you would find a 120 inch UST for $1k. The two most common third party UST screen brands are Elite Screens and XY Screens. For 120 inch the XY is about $2k and the Elite $2700+. When comparing these the performance is the same (very good) and the build quality is about the same (very good). Personally I'd by the XY, but some people would pay the extra for the well established and respected American brand which I could understand, it's of value to some people.

There are cheaper Chinese ones than the XY but many of them do not provide the same image quality. You would also probably have to buy direct from China which is a BIG draw back when it comes to sorting out a problem with the screen. So I personally wouldn't go down that road but others may be OK with rolling the dice.

If you only have $1k to spend I would first try the wall you have to see if it is flat enough and the colour is white or fairly neutral and if that works out just use that. If the wall isn't good enough get a fixed frame standard white screen from Ebay for about $300 - $400 and use that. You will have a lot of image light reflecting to the ceiling instead of your eyes and lighting up the room which also washes out the contrast but you'll have money in your pocket to console you ;-)

                • @skysurfer: Appreciate your help.
I am using an LG PF1000U which I bought 6 years ago and screen it on my wall, and it is ok.
This deal is so tempting and maybe pull the trigger to update the system, but I think its time for me to update a proper screen first.

              • @FlyingPanda99: if you can't afford right now to buy a proper ALR screen designed for these UST projectors, just wait until you can find someone selling one used for very cheap (like Chicago1 did).

Until then, just project straight onto a wall.

It won't be as bright, but will still look pretty amazing.

                • @GandalfTheCheap: Lol I have a cream coloured wall.

Are there any settings to compensate for that?

              • @FlyingPanda99: For 1k you can get a FHD projector + a elitescreen screen

          1. 90 to 120 setting changes the peak brightness. You'll notice if you select 120inch setting, the picture will instantly get brighter. So I would recommend using 120 inch if you're just projecting onto the wall.
  • +1

Is it a fixed size or can you get a smaller screen size if close to the wall?

  • +8

I bought this on the 27th for $1995 picture quality is amazing for such a ‘cheap’ unit. No fancy alr screen just a dark theatre room on a wall.

It has all the functionality of a smart tv built in no dongles etc so phone casting and ability to use media servers it even has a free to air tv tuner built in. YouTube 4K hdr content is vibrant Netflix 4K content looks great Kayo is fantastic with built in sports mode. Lots of image settings you can play with if that’s your thing to brighten the image I found a couple of the pre set settings a little dark for my tastes and the vibrant pre set a little bright for a dark room so I’m playing with the settings a bit. I was amazed to see a Dolby vision projection device for this price. The sound out of this thing is extraordinary for a projector my older projector had sound so tinny it was unbearable this thing has booming sound way better than my actual Sony 85 inch top of the line 2020 living room tv. It’s future proofed the theatre room for another 5 years at least.

I’m not a gamer so I don’t know much about it’s gaming mode sorry. Overall extremely satisfied with this thing and reading up on it I believe Australia was the first market they released it in they will be officially unveiling it at ces 2023 I read online. So it’s pretty cool to get something with new tech at such a great price. Is it worth $4k probs not (depends on the individual I guess) but is it worth $2k hell yea in my opinion.

EDIT don’t forget 10% back in rewards points for gift cards takes this down to $1800 ish which is a steal

    • Thanks @crikeyv2, Where did you get 10% back in rewards points ? Checked shopback, they only have 2.5% cashback.

      • +2

Hey mate Woolies have ‘tcn gift’ gift cards giving u 20 times the points back I.e $50 cards give u 1000 Woolies points which give u $5 off your next shop - effectively 10 percent off max 10 cards purchased per day per account so u will need to buy 10 cards per day for 4 days or just use 4 everyday rewards accounts effectively u end up with $200 back to use on a future Woolies shop (useful if u shop at Woolies only)

        • Lol so if you buy 2000$ worth of 50$ cards, that's 40 cards, so you gotta enter 40 gift cards at the JB checkout? Lol

  • Currently having a 130* sony FHD projectoR which fills up my entire screen, would this be a downgrade as its 120 max? Also want to know going to max size will reduce the resolution

    • +3

Per my comments above, I originally had it projecting into normal white 130" screen. If you are in dark room, it works. Given this is listed as like 90 to 120, it seems to be more flexible then the old l5f marketing materials imply. And as noted, in my dark room, it did work pretty well on the 130 screen.

      • Are there a set of menu of options for size or do you just move the unit back from the wall?

        • +2

I couldn't find anything under settings, I just happened to move it back to make it a 100".

I project onto the wall directly and it's amazing. My friend has this ALR, but quite honestly, I didn't feel like there's much difference for the ALR price of 3k.

      • Thank you

      • +1

When you had non-UST projector screen and
using UST projector, is the ceiling reflection noticeable a lot (to degree it is distrubing the experience) when you watching movie?
(Compared to using a non-ust projector on non-ust screen?)

EDIT: found some sample of ust projector on non ust in dark room here

        • +2

Personally I would say the ceiling reflection is very noticeable in real life (a camera lens does not yield exactly the same result as our eyes provide). Maybe some people are not as discerning though and it could be good enough for them.

  • -1

Don't forget a screen like the 98" TCL will be vastly superior picture quality but if you need above 100" size theirs no other option apart from projector.

    • +2

eye feels better looking at a reflected image then looking into light bulbs thou

    • Not vastly superior.

OLED still wins in brightness and contrast, but everything else - colour, definition, etc - are just as good on a projector.

And now these UST laser projectors with the special ALR screens have closed the gap a lot.

People argue that brightness can be more important to justify purchases they've already made, but there's really no denying that size is more important than a little extra brightness.

Especially at night when most people watch the quality cinematic content where image quality matters.

  • +3

If you don't have the money for a UST screen the projector is still a good buy, you just won't be getting the best image it's capable of. If you want to be able to use it in a lit room like a TV you will want a UST screen. UST Screen vs no UST Screen is explained quite well at https://darkenergyscreens.com.au/

    • definitely need a screen, even a cheap UST screen , which is around $800 . slightly uneven wall will already cause a big curve on the picture compare with rear projection which is fine with the same wall.

      • +4

Rear projection is projecting behind the screen (or rear of the screen)

      • +2

It depends on your walls. A mate used to project a massive picture on his wall and it was great. Didn't even need to paint it with Screen Goo.

        • +1

But he wasn't using a UST projector right?

          • +1

@skysurfer: He was not. It was a standard/long throw LED projector.

From reading the comments here, there seems to be a couple of people using laser UST direct to wall and having good results and some with walls showing waves etc.

            • @Punkboy: The ripple problem with walls probably least affects image quality compared to other downsides when using a wall and not a UST screen. It's mostly about what happens to the light after it leaves the projector, the condensed story is with a UST screen it is directed horizontally into the room and the viewer's eyes, vs up to the ceiling with no screen. There's a better full explanation of UST screen benefits at https://darkenergyscreens.com.au

  • Hmmm, i am making a home theatre room in my new house build that just started so wont be in for at least a year. Is this a good buy to prepare for it or should i wait out another year and see if any better discounts or projectors pop up?

    • +3

i would wait.. tech change all the time

    • +1

Wait. 12 months in the tech world is fast with their improvements.

    • Yeah this is only a huge discount because the first models of these new laser UST projectors just came out, in the last year or two, for early adopter prices like 3k to 10k.

You are safe to wait, most likely these will settle around the 1500 to 1900 mark, and some other models will then reach this price too.

      • +1

Thanks mate, heading around Uk and Europe in may so my wallet will thank me anyway 🤣

  • +8

This info might be useful for a few people.
I bought a Hisense L5F UST last year, it was a few months old/second hand and the seller kept the ALR screen that came with it for his new projector.
Without really planning it my lounge room was well set up for home cinema anyway, with heavy blinds on one side and plantation shutters on the other. I set the unit up thinking I would get a screen at a later date but my wife does not want one hanging on the wall, so that is that. It projects onto a plain flat wall which is painted in Dulux Antique White USA. The image is about 123 inches.
It is really good. Sports in particular are great, especially F1 and MotoGP, both helped no doubt by the late PM time of the races. Movies are excellent, just last week we had some people over to watch Glass Onion and they were blown away.
I use the standard speakers, I have tried it with a soundbar but there was very little difference I can pick.
I have checked out an ALR screen with a Samsung unit at a nearby home cinema outlet and I am not going to pretend it is anything but much clearer, but my setup still works well. I still have my older TCL 75 inch 4K but I prefer to watch the UST by far.
Happy to address any questions re what looks like this similar unit.
