Could go down further. I think 4TB physical hard drive should be sub 100 now as NVM.e and SSD became much cheaper and more accessible than ever before.

Same price I paid for it 6 years ago! Ridiculous that prices are hanging around the same mark for so long. Got a 4TB WD and this one for the same price (actually $128). Seagate failed after about 3 years although it was abused and molested by me. WD im still using, now as a PS5 external storage.

The price of NAND flash memory is getting cheaper all the time, manufacturing technology is improving, and more manufacturers are entering the market.

Meanwhile the cost of making mechanical drives isn't changing, in fact many manufacturers have left the market and brands have merged as they can all see the end of these products is fast approaching. The only recent 'innovation' is SMR which increases capacity at the cost of performance and reliability. A move of desperation.

Just need to wait a couple more years and spinning disk drives will be obsolete.

I second the opinion of the first commenter. I buy these HDDs regularly for many years now, the price did not change much but a good price was always around $100 (you can check ozb history).

Yeah, used to be able to get the Seagate 4TB for $90-$99 pretty often.
Don't forget though that these external drives are all SMR now, so they're less valuable than their CMR counterparts.
If you're planning to shuck them for a NAS it might be more practical to pay extra for CMR.

    Shuckable ?

    • +1

Yes, but also 15mm and won't fit most laptops if that's what you want it for

      • Cool. It probably won't fit into a 2.5" slot in a mini PC.

For another $40 ($169 total) we can get another 1TB (5TB HDD)
