    not behd
Grange is still largely hype though. Plenty of good comparable wines in the $200-300 a bottle. It's largely the label you're paying for.
Seems anything that can capture the Chinese demand goes up in value astronomically

    Crayfish
    Grange
    Milk Powder.

Having said that if i had $750 to spend on wine i'd pull the trigger on this.

    • +6

genuine question, can you please recommend few wines compareable to Grange.

      • +14

Henschke Hill of Grace is the more well known competitor, but still super over priced.

Stuff like Rockford Basket Press is probably just as good, though a straight shiraz in this case. Torbreck's top wines are up there too.

Personally, I'd take a Noon wine over any of them, but difficult to get. Have to go to the cellar door in McLaren Vale when they open for a couple of weekends a year.

        • +2

Yep agree with @gravelc Henschke or Torbreck would be my recommendations or even a Cullen (have had one of these and it was sensational).

          • +1

@Drakesy: Second the motion for Cullen. I'm fortunate enough to live within half an hour of the cellar door and can testify to the value of their wines. Amazing bang for buck, definitely in the upper echelons of Australian produced wine.

        • +2

Octavius is another nice drop you can get for about $80-100 that compares quite well.

Big fan of Rockford Basket Press too

          • +1

@kipps: where can you get octavius for $80?

            • +1

@B4pt24: I swear I got some from Dan Murphy for $80 previously but I’m struggling to see any now - all about $140

        • +1

          Basket Press, a terrific wine!!!

        • thanks

I like Penfolds' St Henri vs their Grange - I'm only reasonably new into drinking/collecting premium wines (7 or 8 years) and in that time I always find the St Henri more to my liking than Penfolds when comparing the same vintages.

Alternatively look at the Margaret River wineries - Woodlands, Moss Wood, Vasse Felix - if you are after premium quality reds (albeit usually CabSauv rather than Shiraz). IMO much better than anything Penfolds delivers these days.

      • +4

Wineries like Standish and Sami-Odi are doing great stuff out of the Barossa at the moment if you can manage to get your hands on them or even John Duval (who is ex Penfolds Chief Winemaker), all at a much lower price point than Grange. Otherwise there is heaps of exceptional Cabernet's coming out of WA like Cullen Diana Madeline, Houghton Jack Mann, Woodlands, Deep Woods etc. Otherwise the Yarra Valley is kicking goals with their Cabernet's as well with the likes of Yarra Yering, Mount Mary, Wantirna Estate etc. Otherwise Te Mata Coleraine from Hawkes Bay in NZ is one of the best Cabernet blends going around at the moment and you can pick up a case for less than one bottle of Grange.

        • Standish is amazing… gotta signup to their mailing list and then jump on it when they release each year!

      • +3

Henschke hill of grace is great, but $900 odd i think. Amazing drop though. A lovely treat for anniversaries or similar. Also their hill of roses shiraz which is just younger grapes cut from the hill of grace vineyard - still absolutely incredible and roughly $400 i think. Haven't looked in a while.

Cullen from WA is amazing. As is Torbreck. In penfolds land, the RWT shiraz is bloody great. Roughly $180 a bottle i think.

I like rockford basket press but it ain't in the league of the grange/HoG unfortunately. Great value though relatively.

On ozb grange always gets a lot of flack, but there's no denying it's a brilliant multi vineyard "best of the best picked" wine run by some of australias best winemakers. It's a stunning wine and if you can get over the price and the ozbargainers saying it's no better than a average bottle of something else, it's stunning.

In our wine fridge i think we have 5 granges and 4 HoG's. They are all aging for special events but it's sometimes tempting to get the coravin out and try them.

btw if you ever do SA, do the henschke hill of grace wine tour at the vineyard/cellar door. It's fantastic.

      • Taste wise, there isn’t a whole lot that “compares” to grange. Standish would be a good starting point. However, it’s important to note Grange established and defined its own style. And being a multivineyard wine, they can shoot for that same style every year. Whether you think it’s a great expression of SA Shiraz or not, it definitely is unique in its own right. It’s also been around long enough most can find a birth year wine.

If you’re talking about wines with the same cachet, it is Australia’s most famous wine so it is considered a bucket list wine (maybe for your birth year or something). If you talk about it in that class, we’re talking first growth bordeaux, grand cru burgundy, top of the tree super tuscans, barolos, German Riesling, champagne etc. Except maybe the Bordeaux, fine examples (including past vintages) of these can be had for less than AUD $750 landed in Australia inclusive of our crazy taxes.

So is Grange overpriced? Depends how much South Australian Shiraz makes up your taste and cellar I guess. For me, seeing this sitting on the shelf and not in any temperature controlled fridges at various warm climate Asian duty free airport stores tells you all you need to know about the audience for this wine. Also worth noting RRP for recent vintages don’t hold their value that well compared to other highly regarded Australian wines as well as the ones I mentioned above.

        • +1

Just to put things in perspective, Grange only costs $20 to make. While there is no doubting Grange is a great cellar worthy wine, it definitely is overpriced these days and really only worth buying for birth year wines or in amazing vintages. Arguably the best Grange in the last 20 years is the 2004, which launched at $549, but could be bought for just over $400 notnlkng after release, but is now double the price, which is nuts. Also the inside word from Barossa winemakers is that 2021 is the greatest vintage in living memory and makes 2018 seem like an ordinary vintage!

    • Not just Grange but Penfolds overall.
Their marketing in China was right on the spot with its transliteration Chinese name “towards prosperity”…

  • 2018 Penfolds Grange is such a delicious wine.

  • Time to stock up

  • Ordered 2 thanks.

  • One of the best rated vintages.

If you got the money, it's worth it.

I think if you wine taste enough, you will get to tasting those $100+ bottles or you go to events where you're tasting $200 French wine, you can see for yourself where you place value.

You can find really good wine from $30 to $100 on sale, if you're passionate about it.

  • Can anyone suggest where to get good pinor noir from? $50-$100/bottle range. Thanks

    • +1

      Tolpuddle Pinot

    • +1

I will list some highly regarded Pinots

      Tolpuddle Vineyard Pinot Noir
      Curly Flat Central Pinot Noir
Oakridge Pinots 2021 is a very good year for most their Pinot. I think Yarra Valley in general for Pinots.
Giant Steps Applejack Vineyard Pinot Noir
      Bannockburn Pinot Noir
Farr Côte Vineyard Pinot Noir 2019
Dalrymple Coal River Valley Pinot Noir

I do tend to enjoy Tassie Pinots.

      • +1

+1 to any of the four By Farr Pinot’s

      • Thanks

    • +1

Kooyong estate less than $50, if you can stretch a little by farr

    • +1

IMO one of the best Pinots around is Joshua Cooper's "Doug's Vineyard". I have had a few bottles of the 2020 and 2021 and it is truly excellent. Can be had for $65-$75 and punches WAY above its weight.

Hi everyone. We were just told that this deal was posted here on Oz bargain. It was meant to be a members only deal, that's why we didn't put it here ourselves.

    This deal sold out twice.
For anyone of you that bought the membership but the deal was sold out, please let us know and we will cancel the membership and refund the $10.
We are working to get some more though…
If we do we will send out an email.
If interested, please subscribe to our newsletter: https://www.skyecellars.com.au/enewsletter
    Thank you

    • Could be the best marketing you ever had or the best marketing stunt too. Either way I'm happy.

      • +3

We honestly thought that it would taken a couple of days for it to sell out. And it was selling steadily. Then we noticed a dramatic hike in sales and later on were told that the deal is posted on Oz bargain.
So, I called the supplier to see if they had any more and they did have the same amount of the previous order and we ordered it.
That sold out very very quickly.
I tried to call the supplier again and see if they could get some more but they didn't answer our phone call. We will have to wait and find out tomorrow.
        Thank you.
        Cheers

The next batch of Penfolds grange is slightly more expensive from the supplier.
What do you think of a bottle of Penfolds Grange for $740 plus 5 random bottles of wine free of charge?

If you are keen please reply or upvote this comment.

If the number of comments/upvotes is considerable we will be doing the special soon.
    Cheers.

    • Seems now out of stock that voting may have dried up a bit.

As for the deal, could not help posting this here as it was a great bargain, sorry if you wanted to keep it just to members!

Based on feedback seems people would probably pay $740 for the grange alone given prices elsewhere are well above that (dans and most places at $1k/btl), so throwing in 5 other bottles will probably keep people happy.

      • Thank you for your feedback.
Please feel free to post the other special as well if we happen to do it.
        Cheers.

    • I am interested in the new deal. I joined the membership in preparation. Cheers.
