I was looking at deals on a Canon mirrorless camera for an amateur photographer like me, and the R10 seems to be a good path for someone who has dabbled in DSLRs before (I have an entry level 200D with some extra batteries which will also work with the R10 and lens which will be compatible with the R10 with an adaptor). The R10 is considered lightweight/portable and the reviews are generally positive. The 18-45STM kit lens package is a reasonable price (similar to the last deal for $1189 at JB Hifi but without the $100 promo from Zip), but the 18-150STM lens kit which has a much better included lens and is a custom order from JB Hifi seems to be a great deal and cheaper than digidirect which was the next cheapest place I could find.

EOS R10 with 18-45STM lens for $1188: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0B1ZB3F68
EOS R10 with 18-150STM lens for $1516.13: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0B1Z91HXC

Only caveat to the above is rumour has it Canon will be revealing the R8 next month so it might be worth waiting if you were on the fence between an R7 and R10 as this might be the happy middle ground. For comparison purposes, if you're also looking at the 18-150 IS STM lens and considering the R7, the cheapest I could find was around $2150 (so circa 40% more)

Bonus offer Canon also has a free photo book valued at $100 when purchasing R7/R10 from Amazon (and other retailers eg JB Hifi).

Price is tempting, but poor battery life, no IBIS, and smaller EVF than competition turn me off. For this price, probably worth paying a bit more for something like a Sony a6400/6600 or Panasonic G9 that doesn't compromise on specs and isn't a crippled version of a similar camera (in this case R7).

    • +2

Canon went too far with the cripple hammer in this one.

It really is a feeder model to the R7. Even with the lower price, from a use ability point it is not a nice camera to use both from lack of features and ergonomics (having used Canon SL1, 600D, 80D APS-C range I feel they could of done so much better). The SL1 was great for hiking however unless you are buying and carrying extra batteries this one would also be limited to casual use.

I still use Canon DSLR and Sony mirrorless but would be hesitant to commit to the former in mirrorless mount due to their anti 3rd party lens manufacturer stance.

  • I still don't understand why would someone pick this over an affordable full frame camera. Even the cheapest full frame camera (which will probably be around 1700$ mark) will be significantly better in pretty much all the aspects.

+1. Sony A7iii was around $1700 after cashback very recently, plus CashRewards 10%. and it's a full frame with IBIS, BSI sensor and great video performance

      • +4

It got down to about $1300 with all the stacks during black friday. I got it for about $1600 the year before.

Lighter kit for travel, less expensive accessories, crop factor for telephoto, cheaper lenses… etc.

    • +1

Market for APSC sensor camera is disappearing quickly. Full frame cameras are becoming smaller and lighter (i.e. full frame Sony A7C would be smaller than most of APSC camera out there). If crop factor is an issue, you can always crop after the fact and get the same effect (with of course better picture quality due to higher dynamic range and low light capabilities). Sony is particularly clever in this regard so they made both APSC and full frame same mount so you could use cheaper lens with crop factor on full frame cameras if you wish (or can't afford full frame lenses).
"I want less dynamic range photos, with high noise in low light, less details and sharpness" said no-one ever.

Full frame cameras are becoming smaller and lighter

I don't understand why some people justify a full frame with that statement as if a camera system consists of the camera body only. What about the lenses? Optics are not getting any smaller, lighter or cheaper, unless they are designed for smaller sensor systems.

        • +1

Actually the lenses are getting smaller and lighter as well. Have you seen Tamron and Samyang line for Sony FE mount. They are ridiculously light. A reasonably sharp zoom lens 28-200 starting at F2.8 to be around 500g, super sharp weather sealed 24 mm F1.8 lens for 200g (same story for 35, 45 and 75 mm prime lenses all are around 200g). These are all full frame lenses with fantastic optics. Technology doesn't stop at bodies, world is moving on.

lol I kind of agree here. It's the only reason I haven't bothered with a full-frame. Comparatively to the m43 world. I think the m43 world's lens sizes is probably what people would love if it could be shrunk to something so compact. But right now when you pair a A7 with any zoom or prime, even if the lenses have managed to shed some weight, physical dimensions of them still feel big. Granted I don't think you'd be able to work around this anyways because full-frame lenses I believe require this spacing in the lenses and thus making the lens enclosures larger in physical footprint.

          • @squaredonut: A7C weight with battery 510g + 24mm F1.8 230g = 740g setup
R10 with battery 430g (mere 80g difference to live with low dynamic range, high noise and low picture quality)
And not a single lens in APSC range to match above weight of samyang with similar specs (in APSC terms it's 16 mm F1.2 good luck finding that lens around 200g within the same budget)

    • For me the main reason I'm considering this R10 is it is much smaller/lighter than the R7, and comparable to my existing 200D entry level DSLR. The main thing which annoys me about my 200D is the autofocus is slow and sometimes focuses on the wrong thing which can be the difference between capturing that special moment (in auto mode most of the time) of my kid or dog.

The only thing which makes me wonder if I should spend a bit more on say the R7 (or maybe wait and see what R8 offers?) is at least it's a tier above so at least I should in theory be getting some better features/stability/etc and the bigger sensor/higher resolution photos (32MP vs 24MP). I'm keen to stay with Canon since I can hopefully reuse some of my other gear eg a couple of lens, spare battery (from the 200D which works in R10), flash, remote trigger, Canon branded bag (haha not the key reason).

I purely do casual still photos of family/holiday snaps/etc, and use a Speedlite flash (so the lack of inbuilt flash on the R7 won't bother me so much). I don't take video or VLOG so not an issue here. I value the LCD screen which can fold out/pivot/etc but sometimes use the viewfinder (at least based on my DSLR).

  • I m actually thinking to get an older gen full frame (i.e. Sony A7ii, or Mark IV etc) to replace my current Canon line up. do you guys think it might be worth to get this one instead?

    • +6

If you want Sony, get at least a7m3.
If you want Canon, try EOS RP, cheap full frame
(In this case you can still use your old lens)

      • +1

yep Canon RP is plenty capable, used it for about a year

        essentially same as 6d Mii.

but sony has better focusing (a7iii and up). want something portable, grab a7c, slightly better focusing compared to a7iii, too

    • +1

Even older gen full frame camera would be miles ahead this garbage. Having said that, A7iii is significantly better compared to A7ii so unless you're looking at super cheap bargain like $400 for a used A7ii, I wouldn't get that over say $1500 worth used A7iii.

  • -3

Just go Sony, overall cost is the lowest.

  • +1 for description:)

  • Expiring the deal as the R10 with 18-45mm is $1349 (16% off $1599) and 18-150mm is $1629.
