Dunlop SP Sport FM800 Tyres Buy 3 Get 4th Free (from $429 for 4, e.g. 205/55R16 $534 Fitted) @ Beaurepaires

1290

My dad's Corolla Hybrid's rear right has a very slow leak and we went to My Car because it was the closest and he wanted the puncture repaired. The guys there were like, we can't do it because the tyre is too old and has cracks on the sidewalls. My dad is a (profanity) cheap bastard and only wanted to change the rear 2. The front 2 are cheap Chinese tyres that prob cost $80.

I found these Dunlops, which are well reviewed, and it's cheapest at Beaurepaires. I checked Bob Jane, Tyroola, Jax, Supercheap etc, and Beaurepaires are cheaper by $100+

So I booked it in, haven't told dad because I don't want to argue with him, and I'm just gonna steal his car and one day he'll have new, good tyres. I think tyres are one of, if not the most important component of a car or motocycle (lots of personal experience here), or any vehicle really. So don't cheap out.

Mod note: Pricing may vary in particular regions.

OzBargain - come for the bargains, stay for the displays of parental support

    • +38

Not really, I'm just sick of his stinginess, especially on something this important

      • +12

sometimes when people gets old, they tried to save money, because to some people, this may become the habit when they were start growing family during their parenting time (for their children)

I can feel this on my own life experience, how my dad tried to spend less nowadays, and me, tried to save more for my baby, although still buying stuff for my dad to replace the stuff that should be replaced

        • +3

I understand completely. We grew up very poor so I understand the stinginess, but my parents are also very generous.

I don't throw money around (mostly), but I spend money when it needs to me spent. I wrote a (profanity) novel decsribing my lifestyle when someone said "You have too much money" in a different post

      • +1

Just remember his stingyness probably is why he owns a multi million dollar estate that you will inherit some day. 😀 (just making a litle fun here)

However thats nice of you to fix the tyres for him…

        • +2

He actually has a multimillion building that I have been managing for free for 20 years. I found good tenants and the rent is enough to cover his expenses. Everytime I go over, he's either gardening or talking to his sister on the phone or watching consipracy shit on youtube,

          • +6

@rosebank: Funny how old people discover YouTube and get hellbent on the conspiracy rubbish. There's so much content and that's all they watch.

Excellent description - had a chuckle lol +1 for the description

  • +2

Have had these tyres on my vehicle several times. Great grip in the wet, relatively quiet but don’t expect a totally silent ride with them on. Would not hesitate to get them again personally. I’ll probably take advantage of this deal tbh

  • +4

Agree it's not worth the minor saving when it could be the difference between life or death in worst case.

    • +3

Yeah had a mate who had been given a car with cheap quality tyres to drive. In the wet the car just slid no grip at all even though tyres had plenty of tread. Scary stuff

  • +1

Any recommendations for 195/50/16 tyres? I found this size hardly gets discounted.

    • -1

You can prob do 195/55R16. Your tyre profile will only be +5mm

      • +4

50 or 55 - that's a section or percentage of the tyre width, not a mm measurement.

        Rolling diameter - tyre + 16" rim:

        195/55R16 is 620.9mm
        195/50R16 is 601.4mm

Cool thanks, learn something new everyday

          • +1

            @rosebank: https://tiresize.com/calculator/

Revs/km is the most relevant. Changes gearing and fuel consumption slightly - often for the worse because engine mgt systems are "tuned" for the standrd setup. Not a huge issue usually.

            • +1

@Igaf: The reason it's important has nothing to do with fuel economy.

You're going to get a lot of speeding tickets if you've just made 100 read as 92 for example - because now you're going to be 8k over when you drive along at "100"!

              • +2

@Nom: That's another reason. Tyre weight also plays a part in fuel consumption for bigger tyres eg 4WD, trucks etc

The diff in this case will be much less than 8kph, in fact closer to 3%, which in most jurisdictions is within parameters (Vic????) and anecdotally would be more accurate (3% overread being the claimed inaccuracy of most speedos). Most modern vehicles also have GPS which is often a more accurate representation of vehicle speed.

Even in notoriously strict Vic police are supposed to giove motorists some leeway.
                http://trafficlaw.com.au/speedos.html

                Police allowances

Victoria Police guidelines require a deduction of 2kmh or 3kmh from the speed reading displayed by prescribed speed measuring devices, depending which device was used. This is to avoid contested cases where the only argument in court is in respect of the ability of the police device accurately to measure speed down to the last 1kmh. The deduction they allow varies for each device depending on the calibration tolerance required by the legislation for that device. As a rule of thumb you can assume mobile speed cameras have a 3kmh or 3% deduction, fixed point-to-point cameras have no deduction while all other speed detectors have a 2kmh deduction. The legislation does not require any deduction to be made, it just requires the device to be accurate to a certain degree. The 2kmh or 3kmh deduction allowed by the police is to take into account potential inaccuracies in the police speed measuring equipment. i.e. the laser or radar device might be 1% over-reading. The deduction allowed for by the police is not intended to provide any allowance for potential inaccuracies in motorists' speedos, although police may allege that it has that effect.

    • you can look at 205/50R16. 10mm wider, but if the vehicle is stock there shouldn't be any issues with clearance. contact patch will be a bit bigger, so more grip, but fuel economy may drop very slightly. still worth it though imo, the increase in grip is noticeable. The 2007 onwards mitsubishi lancer runs this size and going to 205 is no issue, but grip improvement is noticeable. have done this before on magna, verada going from 205 to 215, and on my old legnum from 195 to 205, 215 and 225 - but 225 was pushing it when lowered and without rolling the guards.

  • +3

I heard Beaurepaires are closing down there car tyre business and going to focus on Trucks only.

So if that is true we should get further discount in near future.

    • +1

Would also like to know more about this + source of info

    • +1

Highly unlikely. Cars outnumber trucks exponentially.

    • +4

      I'm calling BS on this.

  • +1

Should be OK on a Corolla, assuming the driving style - but don't put these on a higher powered car.
I regretted my purchase (was seduced by the price) and changed them out.

    • +5

Dad drives like an 80 year old. And it's a Corolla HYBRID, I've driven it in POWER mode and its still slow af. I'm not putting RE003s on a Corolla Hybrid

      • +2

RE003's is similarly priced and also buy 3 get 4th free at the moment. I dare you to put it on :P

        • RE003s are great (but don't last long) and I had them on my Forester XT that I wrote off. I currently have an Outback 3L H6 lifted 30mm. I'm looking at changing the rims and getting more chunkier tyres.

          • +1

@rosebank: Scooby lyf! Forester XT owner here too :P

          • @rosebank: How are they vs PS5?

            • @Save Medicare: I dunno because I wrote off the car a few months after getting the Bridgestones. But my friend who is really into cars swears by Pirelli. He has P Zeros on his S6 that's faster than a Lambo. Like modded everything while still under warranty. I think he might have had PS4s on his slammed SQ5, but prob P Zeros I can't remember

            • @Save Medicare: Re003 are horrible in the wet. I cant speak for michelin ps5 as they are new, but ps4 were the go to tyre and ps5 is the upgrade so i would assume they are just as good, if not better, but as @rosebank friend says pirelli are my go to aswell, ive used both dragon sports and p zeros for many years and they are the best street tyres with michelin ps4/ps5 come just behind imo. Re003 are terrible in the wet but decent in the dry

And also OP, I really dissapointedly and unfortunately relate to you in your description :(

      • +1

I've used both FM800 and RE003 on my previous Toyota Aurion, it's not that high powered but still not bad at 200kw, I actually prefer the FM800, in my situation the grip on the front wheel is better with less wheel spin during acceleration, in the dry the RE003 corners better but on wet roads the FM800 makes me feel much safer

        • +1

Previously had continental on aurion, the fm800 are quieter and now on 2nd set of these.

      • +2

Like lots of things tyres' life is measured in both how much its used, and how old it is in years. Tyres go hard and lose a lot of both dry and wet grip as the years pass. For old people who've cut back to driving few enough kilometres each year it may be that the best tyre for them is one that wears out relatively quickly, because that forces them to replace their tyres before they get old and become unsafe.

  • I always had the same mentality of good tyres being important and getting pirellis or something decent. I had one of my tyres replaced recently on my corolla and talked my mechanic about this. He recommended me China brands like greenlander being fine for a car like mine, they've improved significantly and not worth spending double the price for other brands. I changed to yokohamas and didn't have a great experience with some slippage and grip problems with the recent replacement with a toyo since there was one spare and got a bargain for. Otherwise I'm wanting to try out the chinese brands next.

    • There are so many though, probably all from the same factory with diff treads and branding. How can we tell whaty's actually good?

      • +2

Yeah I guess it's just safer with more reputable brands while I'm sure there's actually good tyres being manufactured in china, it's not knowledge known by the avg consumer like us. I find when deals come up like there's is so similar in price it's not worth taking that risk.

      • It is a lucky dip.

        • +1

          If you die, you die

          • +1

@rosebank: That's right so it's best to not take the chance of a lucky dip. Buy established and reputable brand.

It's alway best to read the reviews first. I don't get why people trash China brands when they know beforehand that what you pay is what you get. You don't pay a programmer $30/ph and expect $100/ph worth of quality. I paid $900 during the black friday sales for 4 tyres and knew that i was getting pirelli's with MOE.

  • +3

Good on you for taking a stand and putting a quality product on there. Something like those Dunlops will be more than adequate compared to the cheap Chinese rubbish. The difference in braking length between the two will be stark, especially in the wet.

I'm always of the opinion it doesn't matter how cheap or old the car is, put decent tyres on it. It's only 4 tiny squares of rubber holding down the car to the road.

When I bought my car years ago it had 'new' tyres the dealer put on to pass roadworthy. They were the cheapest worst Chinese rubbish. Noisy and no grip in wet. Changed them almost the next day and it was so much quieter and better in the wet.

    • +1

I just bought a used hyundai elantra 2017 and they put cheap Chinese tyres on from. They're so loud so need to change them. Only 30% left anyway.

    • Agree 100%

    • +1

      • They trash them because they are shit, the same way your $30/hr programmer would be steaming dog shit.

You've commented this several times. Stop pushing a bloody agenda in a tyre post, please.

        • You must be fun at parties because the joke is good programmers don't exist for $30p/h.

Why do you rage when it is a known fact that any tyre below $100 is instantly crap. Do you feel good that crapping on the lowest tier of items makes you an expert.

          • -1

@BeoWulf: You say this on a bargain site where people actively hunt the dark horse in product ranges, which certainly do exist.

            • @[Deactivated]: Dark horse in tyres? - There is a tier list for crying out loud which can be found online. A manufacturer is not going to make a sub - $100 tyre compete against its $200 tyre range due to obvious reasons and given the competition, the profit margins are already too low for some darkhorse to exist.

The only bargain that people will be scoring instead some fanciful dark horse is when retailers offer discounts and promotions.

              • -1

@BeoWulf: Its easy to sound like a know it all when you already know it all. We get it. Brads got a big brain. Not everyones you. Relax.

        • Scenario: I have a car worth sfa. It needs tyres for rego before I trade/sell it. Is a Chinese cheapie a reasonable option?

The history of Chinese products tells a story. They aren't all rubbish, nor does high/low price necessarily reflect relative quality or value. Atm we don't have enough history to judge plenty of Chinese tyres. Anecdotally the very cheap ones aren't up to better brands but not everyone needs high performance, great treadllife etc.

  • +4

4 tyres for $429 fitted, is a great price

  • Howcome op can swear and I (profanity) can't.

Maybe it only (profanity) works in the post description

        • Yeah, maybe

          • @rosebank: (profanity) me dead! Damn, someone put a swearing filter on OzBargain

First curse word I’ve seen on OzB.

    • +1

I threw in an f-bomb last night with the whisky post. I had the power for a couple days but I think the mods took it away now

    • -2

Sad part is that people are cheering the cursed description, where the OP should have been banned from ozbargain for cursing a father who built a decent business for him.

      • +1

Lol what? we're Australian and use curse words like punctuation. He hasn't built me anything, I've spent an enormous amount of time and my own money getting his building to the way it is today, and filled all levels with good tenants. I get nothing from this. I don't take money from my parents, I'm the eldest so I have to do everything for them, my siblings do jack shit.

  • +1

I've got a corolla hybrid that's 1.5yrs old and at 18,000km. When should I start keeping an eye out approx for these deals? I read that the tyres you get will get to 40,000km/3 years or so, obviously depending on driving style

    • +1

You should be fine. Just look at the tyre a feel the tread

    • +2

There are wear indicators in the tyre tread. Little raised sections inside the gaps. When the tread is worn down to the same level as the wear indicators it's time to change the tyre due to wear.

    • You should have had your tyres rotated by now.

      • I assume Toyota did that at my 1year service, will have to check my logbook

        • +1

Don't assume that with Toyota. After reading about another bloke's experience I marked my wheels to ensure the local Toyota dealer did the logbook rotate and balance check. They didn't. I called them out and they said the tyres were worn evenly (they weren't, rears were slightly more scuffed on one edge) so it was their "policy" not to rotate. Didn't stop them for charging me for the full service. In the end they said they'd do it next service but I told them in no uncertain terms that there would be no next service done by them. Needless to say they will never get my business again, for service or parts. Hopefully your dealer will be better and not attempt to pull the wool.

  • +1

These are good tyres, have them on the Focus. Downsized from 18" to 17". They are comfortable and grippy. Paid a bit more for them at Tempe at the time.

  • +1

Lol. Awesome post. My Maroubra local beaurapaires states $558 for the same deal my tires are the same for my Kia Cerato. I wanna quote your price , when U call, so which store is that deal for? Ta

    • Gouger St, Adelaide

    • The prices are on line on their website. Click the link above.

  • My right rear had a slow leak, and it has cracks near the side wall, but I successfully repaired it. I bought a puncture repair kit from ebay many moons ago and it still works.

  • -4

The "extra safety' your paying for is mostly for driving at a cars limits and towing. Lots of racing drivers here.

    • Or insane things such as braking in an emergency. Downhill. In the wet. When a geriatric appears. Etc.

      • Touch wood.

        • More like touch cloth if you're using $80 chinlee specials.

  • +2

    +1 for you OP!

Cheap tyres are not worth the risk.

  • +1

Got these on the bob jane black friday deal for my wife's corolla. Came out to about $80 per tyre, no complaints so far!

  • Ta rosebank, yeah, not sure NSW will honour the SA price, cheers

  • I would say it's only for some states ie ADL, I checked NSW it's $630 for 195/55R15 which is standard for corollas.

    • Shows $630 for me too.
Also my other size was $534 an hour ago but it's now gone up to $558
