Having been around the hifi industry for nearly 30 years, I can tell you the retail margin is eye watering. They give you a 20% discount happily because you'll think they're really looking after you, while they're screwing you four ways to Sunday. But the only way you'll get access to cost pricing is if you either own a hifi store or someone in your family does. Even staff don't get cost price despite knowing the margin (well, in some boutique stores at least - if they have a decent POS system staff can only see the retail price and get given a discount allowance they can apply to sales where they think it will achieve a sale that otherwise wouldn't be possible. Remember, that's the sales staff's purpose - size you up, try to sell you shit you don't need and probably can't afford, and figure out just what your breaking point is so they can discount just enough to get you over the line).

I worked in the audio industry at one shop for a while about 20 years ago, and the margins on speakers were huge. As staff we were allowed to give up to 30% off to get a deal done, which in almost all case was more than enough.

I cant remember the markup electronics, but I recall it was a lot less than speakers though.

Luckily, our employer sold to staff at cost price. That may be the exception rather than the common thing these days though.
