Should I Stay Loyal to SpecSavers?

I’ve been with SS forever but I’m thinking of shopping around for a cheaper deal as a I usually pay $500 every six months for a 6 month pack of Biofinity XR Torics (Left Eye) and Proclear Torics (Right Eye).

Manufactured by Cooper Vision and shipped over from USA too.

My Prescription is Right Eye SPH -2.00 / CYL - 2.50 / Axis 112 and PD 30.0

Left Eye SPH -3.75 / CYL -5.25 / Axis 58 and PD 30.0

I’m with Medibank and get $250 a year towards Contacts or Glasses.

Thank you for reading this and if anyone could help I’d really appreciate it.

What is your alternative, what is the cost via quality? You can't consider your position without weighing the alternatives? And my mum weighs a lot.

  • Sorry I forgot to mention that my Left Eye has CooperVision Biofinity XR Torics and my Right Eye has CooperVision Proclear Torics.

Do you really need other peoples' input as to whether you should shop around to find the best deal for you? Do you think you need to stay loyal to a multinational?

Take your prescription to other optometrists and find the best deal.

  • I assume you don't get any loyalty in return (e.g. cheaper prices) so just find the best price you can and move on with life

  • That's pretty bad astigmatism. Stick with what you know.

OzBargain-users approve of your idea to shop around for a better deal.

  • I buy from Specsavers because they actually are the cheapest for the contacts that I use. Wouldn't hurt to shop around if you want to try different lenses, but I think they are relatively competitive prices if you are after a specific product (overseas online shops might be cheaper but harder to address if you have issues).

Also try to take advantage of their occasional discount codes, e.g. $30 off for $150 spend type ones.

    • Yeah my lenses are never included in the promos unfortunately.

Good luck OP. Just beware: if you get it wrong, people will endlessly be telling you that you should've gone to SpecSavers.

You owe no "loyalty" to SS as I am sure you are just a $ sign to them. If you can get a better price for the same product then why wouldn't you?

Loyalty to a corporation as a consumer is ridiculous at best.

  • Google your lenses +price to see what other people sell them for. Alternatively, ask your optom to recommend another brand which is cheaper. There might be several brands that provide for your prescription, however you really need to try them as some are more comfortable than others.

Specsavers is usually the cheapest B&M retail store esp. if they have spend $X save $Y deals on. Nevertheless, I also buy contacts every 6 months and have found even with discounts, the direct to consumer online stores are still cheaper. I last shopped at contactlenses.com.au (no affiliation) because they were the cheapest at the time. The time before that, I think I bought from lensworld. Never any quality issues because they all come from the same manufacturer. You don't any loyalty to any store for any reason mate. It's your money. The only loyalty you should have is toward your own wallet lol

Edit: Obviously, you should also take into account benefits from your private healthcare provider as well since you have extras.

Is it 6 in each box? Seems like $380 at clearly contacts with free shipping

    • I get 6 in a box yes because SS tell me that’s the minimum they can order from the U.S.

      • I’d use clearly contacts instead, you can still claim your Medibank with their invoice.

  • Hell no. I got my prescription done, then they screwed up my glasses. Not setting foot in there again!

  • Check as often lenses get sold under different brand names but produced at the same factory. There's lists if you do some googling.

My lenses are cheaper at specsavers under their own brand name. Even at full price they're about 25% cheaper per box, then heaps better when there's a deal on.

For glasses I get them from Clearly when they have sales.

As someone else mentioned your astigmatism is high, as you no doubt are well aware. It is reversible but takes some work. https://endmyopia.org/ is a good starting place. Deep rabbit hole but in 18 months I've knocked more than half off my prescription. Still need glasses and contacts but makes day to day life much more manageable.
