  • Reckon bezos will match?

    • +1

Bezos will only match the price pre coupon

  • dang … bought it from ToysRus at $225 a while ago and still in the box

  • Wow, really good price here for this set. Thanks OP.

Damn that's a good price. I got mine for $209 at Amazon.

If anybody else loves robots smashing each other to bits as much as I do (and why wouldn't you if you like Transformers) then check out the latest season of Battlebots which is currently only two episodes in. Check out r/battlebotsraw for just the fights, no filler and build Optimus while real robots gut each other. I highly recommend it.

Just finished putting together this set over the weekend - it's sitting on my desk right now. Amazing build.

    • LOL, my son is literally sitting on the floor assembling his as I type. Seems to be a popular set.

You can get the generic Lego version of this much cheaper. Generic Lego is never quite right, but it's probably good enough for most kids.

    • +1

This is not for most kids. This is obviously for adults. ;)

    • -1

Not so sure about the safety of the generic brick for kids…

      • -2

It's just plastic. The only difference I noticed is that generic Lego doesn't have as tight a tolerance as real Lego, so some pieces don't fit tight, though that may have improved since I last saw generic Lego. Apparently Lego use very expensive moulds to cast their bricks and they destroy them when they start to wear out.

        • -1

You sure know there are more than 1001 type of plastic and some are not safe or even dangerous…

          • -2

@Dealor: If you plan on eating them then maybe you should stick with official Lego then.

            • +1

@AustriaBargain: So you're sure that the kids wont put the bricks in their mouth??

              • +1

@Dealor: That would be a chocking hazard regardless if it’s genuine or generic type of block.

    • +2

And then there are people who respect things like intellectual property rights, etc.

      • +1

The patents or whatever on Lego bricks have long expired, anyone can make their own Lego bricks. Optimus Prime himself is probably an active trademark.

        • Obviously they're not talking about the actual bricks like what bunnings produces. As for intellectual property, let us know what happened to the Lepin founders

          • +1

@D3m3ntia: iirc Lepin were selling kits using the lego branded boxes, with the Lego trademark on them and all. If you made lego kits but did not use the word lego on it or the lego logo, or any other active trademark, you'd probably be fine. This means you can't have exact copies of lego bricks because every official lego brick has the lego trademark stamped on it somewhere. But you could if the studs on your bricks were smooth on top instead of having the word lego on them, or you could have some other not trademarked word there instead.

            • +1

@AustriaBargain: No, lepin sold their own branded line, eg. STAR WNRS, TECHNICIAN, but their kits were almost direct copies of the legit Lego stuff. They didn’t use the word Lego on the packaging or any other mention of Lego on the bricks and still got shut down.

On a side note, trying to build a complex technic kit with the Lepin technician version was one of the most frustrating things I’ve ever tried to do. As mentioned, the tolerances are not up to par with Lego and with technic, all those moving parts and gears really get affected by the lower quality/tolerances. It may have been a hella lot cheaper but ended up chucking it in the bin as it’s practically worthless if the stuff doesn’t fit properly

              • @Kenb0: I had a huge collection of Lego as a kid, that my parents found at the local dump. The fake lego bits in there sucked, felt like trash mixed in with the real stuff. But this was decades ago, fake Lego must have improved somewhat since then. I say "fake" but Wikipedia says the last Lego patent expired in the 70s, so it's more "Lego compatible" than some kind of illegal fake.

            • @AustriaBargain: Basically what kenb0 said.. they weren't even using the words. You cannot make full copies of the sets and not infringe some sort of intellectual property by calling it.. "optimal secondary".

        • FWIW on a more constructive note (see what I did there?) I actually was surprised to see Lego had acquired the rights for this set, because as far as other building bricks brands go, I thought Kreo had the Transformers licence.

          • @zzyss: Helped that the designer of this set also worked at Hasbro…

    • +1

Could all be different. I got both, generic set was tighter than Lego set, came with one broken (squashed from mould) piece which we had to find a spare from Lego box, metallic pieces are not metallic, face mask is different shape, colours.are darker, sticker colours were all wrong (mine the grey sticker that goes on his grey legs were white), stickers where the real prices were printed on, pieces are fragile (the leg hinge thing snapped when I pulled the feet off), pieces are not as glossy and transforming it not as smooth.

Saying that for $50 the fake set is good enough and I used it to build the bumblebee model and kept the real set as the original build.

  • It's 239.99…
