Wedding Suit - Does brand matter

So I'm currently hunting a wedding suit and with so many different brands can someone help to explain if all wool suits are the same and the marketing just increase the cost. For example MJ Bale have high price tag on their suits where as Daniel Hechter is wool also.

Is it bad that I feel like a cheap suit will be cheap quality? My friend just got institchu and doesn't rate it at all

*EDIT

I feel is the cut of the suit potentially rather then the brand. I will try get a better sizing and see how it looks.

Update *

Cheap suits - But i did go up 3 sizes in pants and a jacket or two from orginal.

Go a Van Heusen wool suit. Affordable and smart. Appears to be a sale on now.

    Just hire them.

There are shops that specialize in hiring out formal wear for events such as weddings.

I think the only thing to consider is if you plan on using the suit for anything after your wedding.

If so, then it might be worthwhile paying for something with better quality stitching etc which will last longer.

I've had plenty of budget suits that look great after being tailored and have laster quite well though

    Recently got married.

Brands don't matter as much as the fabric's quality. Either rent one if you're not planning on wearing suits often or buy from PJ/MJ outlet if you want on the cheap.

Avoid Polyester, find breathable fabrics. Wool blends better for winter.

I ended up buying a Zenga 15 milmil 15 from an opshop for $500 and getting it tailored. Best bargain I've had since I plan on using that suit more often.

Also, avoid Woolcott St Tailors, got massively ripped off and they keep ducking my calls.

    • $500 at an opshop? These stores certainly out the 'opportunity' in op-shop.

      • i reckon…..5k suit that semi-fits and in colour that your happy with for 500 bucks

  • Cut above all else. I hired a suit, based on being measured. It looked shiiiiiiiiiiiiiit. Buy one for yourself well in advance… I'll say it again, cut above all else.

Edit: Even looking shit, no one cared, my groomsmen were in the same boat.

If you're spending on the photography, flowers and staging, you also spend as much on the suit for it to look great. You may get lucky and be able to buy off the shelf, but 90% people would require a tailored suit or significant alterations to an off the shelf one.

As much as it's about the bride, you and bride wouldn't want the groom and groomsmen to look like slobs in the photos, no?

  • I bought a cheap(ish) wedding suit thinking I would never wear it again, its probably seen more use than any other suit I've ever owned at formal dinners, black tie events, award nights, other peoples weddings, meeting important people, cruise formal nights etc etc, so depending on your profession/interests/associations the old wedding suit may get more use than you think. Keep this in mind when shopping.

  • Thanks for everyone commenting on thread.

Does anyone think Anthony squires suits are worth the cost?

I'll get multiple uses out of the suit in at work

    • I'm sure others have said this…
But if you're going to spend extra $$ on the suit, make sure it fits well. Get it tailored. You don't want it sagging, or too tight when you do up a button.

The brand matters far less than:
      1) How well it fits (cut)
      2) How good you feel in it

If those two boxes are ticked, don't worry about brand.

And looking at the pricing @ Anthony Squires - no I don't think they're worth it. Keep the money to spend on something that you'll notice/that you want, or just save it.

    • Anthony Squires suits are pretty good.

I would also recommend Bell & Barnett - you can pick them up pretty affordably at their outlet stores. I see you are in Melbourne, the outlet at e

I've owned two of their suits and they have both lasted me years.

Ultimately though it is about what you feel comfortable in and in terms of look most suits will look good if properly fitted and tailored to you which can be done affordably after purchasing.

If you would prefer to have it made for you, Instichu are also very good and affordable.

      • Bell & Barnett are no more.

    • In recent research for a wedding me and a friend decided that getting a suit made is the way to go. Will cost about $900. A tailored off the rack suit would be $700-$800 so the extra money is worth it for a fit, design and fabric of your choice.

Whenever i go to a wedding i ask every guy the brand of their suit and if its a cheapie brand, i treat them like low society while sipping my champagne.

    • …i treat them like low society while sipping my their champagne…

  • I've worn Daniel Hechter suits before. was impressed for price.

  • I don’t think brand matters and I’d like to think it comes down more to material.

I see you’re in Melbourne. I recently went to Lidis Tailors & Moda Melbourne down Bridge Road. I found their service and prices excellent. They were also backed by decent online reviews. I’m not sure how much you’re looking to spend but they sold wool blend New England suits for $399 and 100% wool Gibson suits for $499. These prices were for 2 piece suits and they include any tailoring/alterations free of charge upon purchase. They had a quick turnaround time as well which was great since I organised it two weeks before the wedding I was attending. I am in no way associated and just giving my 2 cents as a happy customer. I’m also going to be wearing this suit at a few other occasions and occasionally at work, so this price point suited me.

To put it into perspective, branded suits at DFO around the same price point were mostly 70-85% polyester which wasn’t ideal for me.

    • +1

I think you have nailed it. I think Gibson is great price for the material which is what I'm more fussed about.

      • I definitely thought so as well! You should also consider the Ted Baker outlet in Preston. I went found the sizes either too big or too small for me, but you might have better luck - I see others have said the fit is also important! The prices are quite decent. I believe they have a lot of Wolf Kanat suits which seem to be wool. All the best with your purchase!

If your future wife and friends judge you on the BRAND of your suit then it's….not good.

  • +4

TLDR: Buy something that fits and complements your body and is comfortable. Brand means nothing, look good and feel good. No one cares if you're wearing Louis Vuitton or Tarocash, just as long it looks good IMO.

    Priority list
Fit > Material > Colours > Accessories (cuffs, watch, belt, rings, necklace, pocket square etc) > Brand

I have a Hugo Boss suit (approx 1k) which I stupidly spoiled myself with and it's a great suit but I also have a suit from YD and I get more compliments on my YD suit I got for $150 on sale than my Hugo suit. I think both suits looks nice on me, but from another perspective, YD won and I wear that more often now.

What matters is how it fits and looks on you, and if it's comfortable. No one cares about the brand, the only people that cares about the brand is the wearer. If your future wife or if you're the guest at the wedding and if they care what brand you wear then they are shallow people.

I am going to a wedding this weekend and I have a $90 fancy blazer from ASOS, $60 skinny suit pants from connor, $400 giorgio armani shirt (which was gifted to me) and various jewellery, one from Fendi ($470) and another from vitaly ($30).

    • mic drop!

      Priority list
Fit > Material > Colours > Accessories (cuffs, watch, belt, rings, necklace, pocket square etc) > Brand

    • I used to work in suiting and this is the correct answer, but probably don't get your suit from YD :P

  • Go to the Hugo boss outlet in Preston you can get a good suit or tux there for a reasonable price. Tailoring at Katrina’s designs in flinders lane they are good quick and cheap

  • I wore Tommy Bahama for my wedding, I suggest you change your wedding to not have to wear a suit.

  • MJ Bale make pretty decent suits and they often have styles on sale. With decent material, good tailoring really comes into play.

Hot tip: Get yourself fit for the wedding. An athletic looking person can make a cheap suit look good. A heavy set person can wear a 5k suit and still won't look the part.

  • A custom made suit aka a properly fitting suit will not only look better, but feels better.. keep in mind your going to be in this all day.

  • No one understood what branded suit I wore at the wedding. We got off the rack Studio Italia suits and had some minor alterations done. On the day, everyone was focused on the bride, her ring, the alcohol etc.

  • +2

I recently had my own wedding last month and everyone told me that I had to get my suit tailored as it was a special event. After spending a little over a 1k on my suite (custom tailored) and going through with it till the end, I can assure you with full confidence that brand doesn't matter at all.

Just to be clear, I loved my suite and it was amazing. I realized I could have opted for a cheaper option for good quality. You just need to do a lot of research and try out a lot of suites.

Whether you choose to spend lots of money or opt for a cheaper suite, this particular aspect of suite shopping doesn't matter at all. The important thing is you look yourself in the mirror when trying out suits and if you feel and look good, then you have found your suite.

I suggest you do this on your own as people will always have different opinions but your opinion trumps all.

Best of luck with your search and I hope I have added some value to your question.

I'm confused; are we talking about suits you wear or suites you honeymoon in?

  • You only get one shot to look your best and feel your best on your wedding day. Plus, if you buy a good one, you will use it numerous times aftwards. I bought my Hugo Boss suit in 2010 and have warn it to numerous other people's weddings and job interviews. We used some gift cards from rewards points to lower the price and got the fit adjusted afterwards.

    • You only get one shot to look your best and feel your best on your wedding day.

As someone who's soon to be divorced (waiting out the 1 year period to sort it out still) I can assure you that's not always the case.

      • Re-read: You only get one shot …. on your wedding day.

I didn't say you only get on shot…

  • I bought mine from Oxford 2 for $499

    • how many times do you plan to marry?

      • hahaha… the price for one is $399 I think. So why buy only one?

  • +2

If you're buying a suit "off the rack", I recommend that you spend more on getting it altered to fit your build. I've bought cheap suits previous (but still of good quality) but they fit much better once altered professionally.
Just make sure you buy a suit jacket that fits around the shoulders properly as this is the hardest part to alter or can't be altered at all.

  • hey mate looks like we're the same age (1989!) and both getting married in April (I got married last year!) I would say first and foremost the most important factor is fit, you could go business, black tie etc but if your suit looks like a 2000's NBA player its going to look awful. Next consideration is style, do you want simple black tie, waist coat? or double breasted? What style is your bridal party going for? I went through the same phase last year leading up to the wedding and I ended up getting our suits from Oscar Hunt (made to measure). Cost roughly 1900 for 2 suit jackets and 1 pant, I went a double breasted black jacket, black pants for the day ceremony/photography and changed into a white dinner jacket for the reception. They quoted us roughly 1k for the grooms tuxes but we ended up getting them from Oxford for like 450 each which looked great. Good luck mate

    • Nah, go all-white like King James with pants so baggy that even your size 15 shoes can barely be seen. You won't regret it.

  • Just get one from politix or instichu

  • I hired suits for my wedding via Peter Shearer.

Never again. They got so many things wrong. And I spent the last 48 hours prior to my wedding driving around town making sure that everyones clothes fit.

And I honestly didn't find it that cheap either.

Recommend buying one that fits well.

"Save money on your wedding suit by buying a cheaper option and invest the savings in a respray for your car. It's a practical way to make sure you look sharp on your big day and have a brand new looking car afterwards."

  • If you are overweight, losing a few pounds and wearing a cheap suit will look better than gaining a few and wearing an expensive suit

Two Fs matter when it comes to any clothing.

Fabric and Fit. When it comes to brands, it would only matter if you fit their off the rack things.

    • 2 Fs..nice. i got in 50 sec late

  • it comes down to fabric and fit. echoing above, if you are spending more than 500 dollars on a suit get it tailored. unless you have a stock model body nobody looks good with off the rack unless you get it modified in which case you might as well go tailored to start with. not necessarily good brands, but pick a premium fabric, you shouldn't need to spend more than 1k to look the look

  • +3

wedding photographer here. When a guy has a suit that looks bad, it really is noticeable in the end photos.

I think the cheaper brands like mj bale / politix etc are ok if are a pretty normal physique and fit into the off the shelf stuff ok.

I would highly recommend getting things modified / tailored if needed. MJ have a tailor service in store.

I hate to say it on ozbargain but when I get a guy who wears a real suit - i.e. 2-5k, tailored, it does look better. There's no getting around it.

Personally I'm a skinny bastard (I easily fit into the small off shelf stuff) so I typically wear (as a photographer) politix suits to weddings as I trash the hell out of it by running around in country fields etc. and an at weddings every week so I don't spend crazy $$$ as I need to buy new ones every 15 months or so.

My personal suits I keep for my personal life are tailored MJ.

  • +2

    Get a tailored suit.

    Seriously.

It's your wedding. A tailored suit will be perfect and last for life.

It doesn't need to be super expensive.

    • Assuming fashion changes and body shape changes don't happen :)

  • Hired ours, altered for free, looked great.

  • +1

MJ bales are generally much more tailored fits. All my work suits are MJ's for this reason. Brands I think is irrelevant, however the more expensive ones have generally been better fitting for me (more time spent in producing a more slim fit) and a good place to start.

Generally there are three types of suits:

    1. Bespoke (which is made for you)
    2. Made to measure (which uses a template and tailored for you), or
    3. Off the rack (MJ bale, Canali etc).

The point here is that if you're after an off the rack (which is a great option for value), then you SHOULD expect to tailor it further, you want it looking as schmick as possible. You can tell an untailored suit at a wedding vs a tailored one (I can from my experience).

If you want it to be as perfect as possible, refer to bespoke/MTM. Otherwise a well fitted set of off the rack + further tailoring would be a good option. I would always recommend hems, sleeve lengths, and jacket fitting. I went further and had the pants pulled in a bit (for a more slim fit) plus the jacket pulled in at the back to have it sit more tight.

    • +1

Also, make sure the shoulder pads sit on your shoulder!! If they dont, walk away, I'm certain it wont be the right suit for you and no matter what you tailor, you cant fix this

  • Cut/fit > brand

  • lol mate, I bought my suit and the suits for my groomsmen at Connor & they were all perfectly fine. As others have said though, people won't be looking or caring about you, it'll be about the bride haha.

  • If you want to get married as a man who owns a suit you might as well spend the money and get something that fits and makes you feel good.

If you just to want it just as a costume for the wedding the quality won't matter as much and consider renting if you want a fancy look.

  • Recently got married.

It's really up to you mate. Personally, I love a good fitting and comfy suit, so I spent quite a bit on it. Suit is one thing you can tell the difference between a cheap one vs expensive one. My suit is half canvas, probably the most comfortable suit I have ever worn.

Someone mentioned here cut/fit > brand. I went through a tailor, so it's not one of the big brands.

In saying that, all comes down to your budget. If you don't have the budget for it, spend less.

  • How it looks and how it’s tailored matters way more.

Just never go to Peter Jackson. Those guys were overpriced and incompetent.

  • Go to kelly Country and get a tailored suit.

My Italian fabric custom suit looked ace and has been reworn a few times since to other weddings. Still looks mint.

Didnt cost a bomb like some well known brands either.

  • In my lifetime I went to a few marriage ceremonies and what I found out the quality and the material of the Suit really makes a lot difference for me.

  • +1

Got lucky buying my suit when Roger David went bankrupt. You can't take the OzBargainer out of me, married or not. Got 50% off.

I am a Bigger unit. Suit looked tops my wife bought her dress also on clearance.
Fit and fabric over brand. MG bale /van huesen are crap for me, great for my mates

    Good luck mate.

  • my wedding suit is less than $50, bought it from sportsdirect even before i got to know my gf and get married.

Was browsing ozbargain, and saw this cheap suit, bought it and stay in my drawer all the time, until one day when i am about to hunt for wedding suit, and i realised i have got that one. wear it.. bingo !

So, to me, brand doesnt really matter

  • Would say whether Brand matters depends on your Bride.

  • I just got married this week and actually wore chinos and a jacket that I normally wear to work (my shirt was double cuff though) - it is all about making sure you have the tailoring done right. My wife went through a few different options of dresses and ended up wearing a bridesmaid's dress she picked up from a portmans. We have plenty of cash but felt that there are better things to be spending out money on.

  • Those that matter won't care, and those that care don't matter.

  • Fly to Thailand/ Vietnam, spend a week there on the booze, and have a tailored suit made.
It'll still be cheaper than buying a Hugo Boss suit and having it altered to fit you

    • +1

Amd probably come back with a different wife 😂

  • +1

I'm a suit guy. Brand absolutely does not matter, it's a tailor suit that makes you look like a million bucks.

Match it with a watch, cuff links, pocket square and a lapel pin and I guarantee you, all eyes will be on you. 🤙
