Normally $3199 (or $2959 with edu pricing) so not an insignificant discount.

    • +9

That’s the price for the new M2 Pro. The M1 Pro normal price is $2999 (or $2749 edu price).

      • Which is still another $200 (or another 6%) less. Or ~$450/15% off RRP.

What discounts do people expect on these?

        • +26

I think people expect accuracy when comparing models.

        • +5

We expect 25% discount on late models.

  • +6

    Price matching Gerry

Could get a 5% price beat at Officeworks if you are quick enough. Still $2,577 there.

    • I initially read "Amazon Deal", and was wondering why would he promote Amazon or did Amazon buy it. :D

    • +1

Nice. Down to $2420.60 after price match.

    • Do they have stock. Couldn't find the base model before Christmas for a reasonable price in stock. Bought the 10/16/16 1Tb instead after all discounts with gift cards at $2,590

  • +3

New base model MB14 has a 10 core cpu now comprising of 6 performance and 4 efficiency cores. The old M1 Pro model has 6 performance and 2 efficiency cores. This could result is substantially better battery life if you run the machine in the "low power mode". For the M1 Pro the low power mode did not make that much difference as there were only 2 E cores. For the M2 the efficiency cores are notably better performing than in the M1 AND there are now enough of them to provide good multi tasking capability. For the M2 MB air the low power mode gives you really long battery life as seen in the video below.

Depending on your needs that may be worth the $300 premium for the MB14 M2 from AOC store

Max's youTube videos can be clickbait at times.

Macbook Pro 14, one would care more about performance, so the added E cores are more like Intel 13th gen to boost multi-core performance for apps which can take advantage of the extra cores. A lot of those apps are favourites for youTubers doing testing. HDMI 2.1 port and WiFi 6E are things people wanted previously and now are added.

With M2 Pro/Max, Apple is throwing more cores (CPU and CPU cores) because it is still 5nm. Anyway, smart move from Apple (somewhat the same trick Intel played for 13th gen). Question is can people resist or they will cave in.

      • Not worth my m9ney. Ill buy the m1 MBP instead.

      • +5

Clickbait you say? almost any large tech channel video on youtube is presented in a clickbait fashion these days.

The apple E cores are not like Intel e cores at all. The Apple E cores are genuinely much more energy efficient than their P cores. The Intel E cores are not energy efficient, they are die space efficient. They are efficient only for intel in that they can put more E cores than P core on the same die space and keep up with AMD in multi-threading benchmarks.
The actually energy efficiency of the intel E cores is LOWER than their P cores. This is one of the reasons the Intel chips still have terrible battery life.

Also, not sure that many people care about HDMI 2.1. Do you know anyone who has an 8k monitor or uses a 120Hz 4k monitor? sure it is nice to have but due to costs these are not mainstream at all at the moment.
Similarly with Wifi 6E. Sure for some it might be nicer to have potentially faster file transfer speeds over your WLAN but it won't affect your internet browsing experience since the bottleneck is your internet speed anyway.

        • +2

          HDMI 2.1 matters because:

          • You don't have to buy an USB-C/alt-mode or Thunderbolt monitor to get 5K, 6K or 8K.
          • In the USA, 4K/144Hz monitors are more reasonably priced. Anyway, one of those is cheaper than Macbook Pro 14.
          • 4K/60Hz HDR 4:4:4 requires HDMI 2.1. With HDMI 2.0, you can only do at best 4K/60Hz HDR 4:2:2.
          • For Macs, 4K isn't the most ideal resolution (scaling wise), 5K is. That's why Apple sell 5K monitors.
          • This is needed because competitions have started doing HDMI 2.1 last year (both Intel (12th gen onwards) and AMD). Or, because it is Apple, they get another year to make it HDMI 2.1?

          Wifi6E:

          • Wifi6 actually feels like it is not quite complete. Wifi6E introduces one additional band.
          • Wifi6e card from Intel is ~$30 or less. You want Apple to save more money on Wifi?

We are talking about getting a machine in 2023.

          e-Cores:

          • People get MBP14/16s for performance. If people really want low power consumption, get MBA.
          • Are you saying using low power mode is something people really want on MBP14/16?
          • Based on past benchmark tests by reviewers and youTubers, we will see the same for M2Pro/M2Max (hey, that's how they tested M1Pro/M1Max, Intel 12th & 13th gen). You can spin power efficiency all you want, but no doubt those extra e cores will be a factor in benchmark tests.

There is only so much Apple can do with TSMC's 5nm. In Apple A16, there is not that much Apple can do, but in M2 series CPUs, adding more efficiency cores is a cost effective solution. MBPs with M2Pro/Max will sell like hot cakes. However, there is no doubt a performance leap will come in M3 series.

          • @netsurfer: I agree. I'd rather go with M2P/M for HDMI 2.1. Been waiting for Apple product to support it for some time. I want them to have DP 2.0, too, but you know it's Apple so that's good enough for 2023.

    • +1

If efficiency cores and battery life are so important to you then you should get the MacBook Air. It’s surely a bonus to have more of them on a MBP, but it’s not the main reason to choose pro over air

      • +4

The issue is I want the 120hz display. Once you go 120hz on the phone you can’t use a 60hz laptop. If I could take performance of air with 120hz I could. I imagine many are in the same boat where we don’t need the performance of the pro and would appreciate better battery life

        • +2

Also the better screen in general with higher brightness and contrast. Plus better ports, speakers and webcam on the MBP than the Air

  • +14

Worth noting Apple refurbs are $2299 and you can stack with discount codes

    • did they just drop the price of these?

      • They must have, last time I checked the refurbs were about same price as this discounted model.

        • Yeah that's a significant drop. The refurbs used to be around the $2500~2600 mark off memory

          • +1

@chartparker: They were $2559 yesterday - I was looking up prices. (Yesterday these were $2658 from the AOC store, now no longer available.)

The announcement of the M2 Pros has complicated my decision-making. I suspect all I really need is the M1Air, which is consistently $1k on FB marketplace…

            • @awaiko: That moment when you fall off the pricing ladder!

            • +2

@awaiko: I keep getting very tempted to shell out for the Pro 14, but in reality I don't need it, and I'm still so happy with my M1 Air which hasn't missed a beat (used for office work, light coding, video editing, etc). If you don't have an obvious use case for the Pro then $2.5k vs $1k should really be a no brainer.

              • @rabid_monkey: I have the 14 and love it, but I use it for Lightroom with a massive catalogue where I'm regularly hitting swap with 16gb, and by the time I specced up the MBA to 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD the 14 presented better value with more ports and better/bigger screen for photo editing

    • I think they did drop prices with announcement of M2 Pros. Also meant discounted gift cards

    • Discount code?

    • Are they actual refurbs or discounted originals?

      • +1

I had bought a refurb iPad Pro directly from Apple refurb.

Came in a brand new outer shell and battery. Couldn’t really tell a difference between the stock you get from your local retailers and Apple refurb. Everything was so sparkly clean

        • +1

Thanks for reply. Good to consider in this instance. Still got some gift cards with them.

    • +2

      Stack with which discount codes?

      • +2

Yea I have not heard of an Apple discount code. It's an oxymoron.

    • What discount codes?

    • For everyone who's confused about my original comment, I've already mentioned I meant discounted gift cards.

If you're wondering what I mean by that, you can get 10-15% off gift cards quite often from Coles/Woolies/Aldi and exchange them for Apple gift cards. You can load the Apple gift card onto your Apple ID and then check out by paying with the credit on your account. You can also try your luck with cash back in this process as well.

      • Just got confused by stacking lol

I assumed gift cards, but didn't think you could stack.

  • this would be perfect if it came with 1tb of storage. I jsut realized this is old stock

  • Can they make this 2.25k instead?

    • +4

Yea shoot a message to Bezos and see what he says.

    • Somewhat yes, but refurbished - see pandawelch's comment below:

      $2299 on refurb store

    • If you shave 2cm off the side it will get down to 2.25k

    • +1

Sorry, this will be the lowest.

  • +2

    $2299 on refurb store

  • -2

    Wow, these are expensive laptops!

    • Expensive yes but its the most well rounded laptop I have ever used. I dont think I can spend twice the amount and get an equivalent laptop from another manufacturer.

      • +2

Oh yes you can if you spend twice the amount.

        • +5

          I dont think I can

          1. Battery life
          2. Performance on battery + quiet
          3. Speakers
          4. Display (1600 nits + 120hz) micro led so no burn in issues unlike oled
          5. Quality webcam
          6. Large trackpad which works as well
          7. Same build quality and perhaps aftersales support

          I have a 16inch M1 Max though.

          • @dealsucker: You should be an ambassador for Apple 😉

I plan to buy the 16" base model. I know it's heavier buy I'll suck it up.

          • -2

            @dealsucker: For 1/2 price I bought 2x Acer Nitro5 an515-56 15.6" 144Hz i5-11300H 16g+512gb M.2/GTX1650 4gb ($730 so good value that I bought +$704 refurbished as new). I can upgrade cheaply to 64GB RAM, M.2 2TB (already in), 2+TB SSD - all easy to replace/upgrade.
            I use 2x 32" 4K Samsung/Dell monitors (shared with other PC).
What more can I ask for that price?

With the saved money in couple of years I will have extra/replacement that will be much better than any Apple ;)

          • @dealsucker: The killer feature is the apple silicon.
Intel just don't make anything comparable.

    • +6

Yup, it's an expensive luxury item. The argument would be it's one of the most powerful laptops you can buy, and it'll keep up that performance even when unplugged, and the battery will last you most of the day even when you punish it. It's got the best screen going and it'll likely still be crushing heavy workloads in 5+ years time, with the bonus of good resale value. Tough to find another laptop that ticks those boxes.

  • Wish I’d sold my M1 Pro MacBook before this. Woke up and was gutted as I nearly sold earlier in the week and fumbled.

    • +2

M1 pro is a better value. Just stick with that.

  • Which is better for heavy internet use (multiple tabs opened), word, excel, Netflix?

Apple Macbook M1 Pro or Air M2?

    • +12

      air m1

      • +2

I second this. The Air M1 will easily handle that.

        • Same Air M1. You really only need a lot of power these days for heavy video editing (4K or especially 8K) and even then only if you are doing pro level edits.

    • +2

I've owned both. The M1 Pro is technically faster, but the M2 Air hasn't skipped a beat with anything I've thrown at it. It might be my favourite computer I've ever owned.

    • +4

      Air will be it.

      • +2

        Thanks Tim

      • The Tim Apple thing really bothers me.

    • +1

The air m2 has poor value once you increase the specs to 16/512. You can now get the MBP 14 from the refurb store with better specs for cheaper! The only downside is the 400grams extra weight

      • The weight and profile of the two are significantly different imo (I have both the pro and the air). If you don't have power-intensive tasks that you need to do, I'd suggest prioritising form factor.

        • Yeah,

If you're a student then Air but if you do Music, or Video Editing you may want the M1

          • @[Deactivated]: Always astounds me how many people in the world are music and/or video editors and need powerful laptops like these.

      • Some think 400g extra weight will lead to scoliosis 💩

    • -1

      excel on a mac?!

      • +2

Excel has been on Macs for years.

Microsoft released Mac versions of Word 1.0 in 1984, the first year of the Macintosh computer; Excel 1.0 in 1985; and PowerPoint 1.0 in 1987.

One of the selling points of Office365 is you get both Windows and Mac versions. You don't have to buy separate versions.

        • -1

Yeah I know - I just really hate using it on Mac…

    • -1

Do you use multiple external screens? If so avoid air (only supports one display which is annoying). Otherwise air is great

      • -1

Pretty sure all m1s only allow 1 external display

      • +1

M1 and M2 Macbook Air, M1 and M2 Macbook Pro 13 inch are all limited to 1 external display via USB-C/Thunderbolt.

Mac Mini M1/M2 supports HDMI + 1 USB-C/Thunderbolt, but think of HDMI as the one you get due to not having a laptop internal display.

M1 Pro/M2 Pro series support multiple external screens (on top of the internal display).

        • So M1 Pro 13 only one external display but the 16 allow multiple?

I have a 13 pro m1 and it definitely doesn’t work with more than one
