    I reported SPAM!

  • waiting for Woolworths to offer 40% next

    • Woolies just did their promo last week, and only offered 20%. I"m noticing this quite a bit now, with woolies being tightarses. It used to be Woolies/Coles offer 50% off the other would do the same promotion the week after, but now often Woolies don't discount the same amount

      • yeah i noticed the 20% off recently as well. I am behind for not noticing that Woolies are starting to not follow on with the same offer after coles.

Looks like I should grab some Spam from Coles for now, rather than expecting Woolies to have similar offer next week

I've tried Praerie Kitchen Spiced Ham as a substitute for Spam while it wasn't 40% and I actually prefer it now to Spam. I would still buy Spam at this price but at least now it's more of an alternative for my go-to meat-in-a-can rather than the main.

    • "Meat in a can" - sounds so appealing

  • Majority of the SPAM alternatives are plenty good too, including the Korean ones that have a slightly different flavour. They're regularly around this price as well, or cheaper

I remember buying 60 cans of spam off a OZB deal to store for many years for a SHTF scenario. But then i ate them all within 6 months.

      Might need a body check.

This sounds like something I would do so I cannot even laugh at your conundrum.. but damn, an average of 1 can every 3 days for 6 months is a solid effort!

I did the math.. 64k calories over 180 days = 355 per day on average (no doubt it will be more or less day to day). I will pray for you tonight.

  • Good time when you can get free polo and T shirts from Spam.

Honestly very mediocre value for meat these days..

    Spam is the best!

I also love corned beef but it's like $8.50 for the regular can. I can't fathom to pay that much for corned beef

  • Mandatory spam report!

How long does this stuff last for?
I stocked up on a couple of trays of this before covid was a thing but none of it's been touched, it's as popular as Dogs Milk, hopefully it lasts as long as Dogs Milk too!

    • So it was you! Haha. Gotcha.

    • Actually, I've had a couple of tins over a couple of years and I don't mind it but I always have fresh food available and am pretty much stock piling this for a rainy nuclear day!

So the question remains, how long will it keep for when stored properly?

      • No expiration. Best before 3 yrs after manufacture

  • The Plumrose stuff is often cheaper.

  • Spam is made by Hormel but there is also Hormel luncheon meat that is not Spam and cheaper, probably doesn't taste as good.

  • Time to stock up!

  • Any generic version of this which taste just as good?

    • The ALDI version is pretty much the same and a fair bit cheaper.

      • Shall try it, but do they do low salt version?

  • Mmmm, you can really smell and taste the carcinogens.

    • Ugh.
      Always one,

      • You can have mine, Freddie.

"Processed meat classified as Group 1, carcinogenic to humans. What does this mean?

This category is used when there is sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in humans. In other words, there is convincing evidence that the agent causes cancer.

In the case of processed meat, this classification is based on sufficient evidence from epidemiological studies that eating processed meat causes colorectal cancer."

        • Great. And I’ll expect free postage, as you shouldn’t be eating an meat.. or anything by that logic:

          From the link you sent:

Are any meats better than others:
A few studies have investigated the cancer risks associated with different types of red meat, such as beef and pork, and with different kinds of processed meats, like ham and hot dogs. However, there is not enough information to say whether higher or lower cancer risks are related to eating any particular type of red meat or processed meat.

          Should I stop eating meat:
Eating meat has known health benefits. Many national health recommendations advise people to limit intake of processed meat and red meat, which are linked to increased risks of death from heart disease, diabetes, and other illnesses.

How much meat is safe to eat:
The risk increases with the amount of meat consumed, but the data available for evaluation did not permit a conclusion about whether a safe level exists.

I recall the original scaremongering on this.
It was around not eating anything barbecued.
Later it was found that it related to eating anything cooked at high temps rapidly.
Then it was any this burnt was the main concern.
My take home message from that was, keep eating barbecued food in moderation and watch that it doesn’t actually burn..

          • @FredAstair: TL:DR
I encourage you and your family to eat as much SPAM as possible

. Because you appear waste it trying to educate someone on something that they already have a vast knowledge on.

I know that ultimately you may feel you are providing a service….but you’re not.

  • How many other times do you get to use the tag Spiced Ham?!

  • Nice!! I'm feeling a lot poorer this year. This deal would certainly help!
