Architecture Talk Series: Cities And Urban Living In Japan 1868-2025, Thursdays 9/2-2/3 @ Japan Foundation, Sydney

210

The Architecture Talk Series brings together renowned academics and scholars of Japanese architecture and urbanism. Held over four weeks at the Japan Foundation Sydney and online, these seminars present an overview of representative examples of buildings and designers which prompted a radical phase of change in the construction of larger cities, new modern buildings and infrastructures in Japan, from the Meiji Era to the contemporary period.

The speakers will investigate and present selected architectures and projects in their historical background spanning four periods: From the end of Edo feudal Period to the beginning of the 20th Century; the phase of modernisation of Japan till the End of the Pacific War 1900-1945; The Post-war reconstruction and the rapid urban and economic growth in 1945-1979; From the years of the so-called “Bubble” to the contemporary period 1980-2023.

      Glad there's an online option.
Mainly see the free movies, shown in various places.

Spent much of my many travels in Japan interested in the styles of architecture of different periods.

Spent a wonderful time at Meiji-Mura - an open-air architectural museum/theme park, near Nagoya.
Highly recommended for those interested in the change in architecture of Japan from the important Meiji-Restoration period.

The museum preserves historic buildings from Japan's Meiji (1867–1912), Taishō (1912–1926), and early Shōwa (1926–1947) periods.
A representation of buildings from the earlier periods in this presentation.

The building designs show a dramatic change in thinking in Japan.

For example, an early prison relocated from Hokkaido, does not have solid walls. It was designed to inflict as much suffering as possible in the harsh cold conditions. "8 prisoners went in, 1 came out!"
Beside it is a "model prison" from the late Meiji period (1907), similar to Western prisons of the time… tough, but more humane.

Japan Foundation have been posting their free events (films, exhibitions, talks) here since 2017.
All except the first, posted by same Employee.

So, why did 5 Report this as Spam & 1 as Sockpuppeting??
And uniflex commented that this freebie is "Not a bargain. This is spam"??

(There have been a few minor changes to the Title since first posted (now shown as over several Thursdays), but it is basically the same post.)

It may have limited appeal. But, I've really enjoyed a few events posted. Looking forward to this series of discussions online.

  • Enjoyed the presentation. Learnt so much👍

Although I have some interest in Japanese history & architecture, it took 3 viewings of tonight's talk to grasp some concepts. It's a very different way to view & understand Japan🎏

Some of my favourite buildings were discussed. Like the stunning & very significant Ise-Jingu (visited 3 times between 2007-13). Rebuilt every 20 years. Next in 2033

On my first visit, the Yakitori owner in Ise excitedly showed me a photo guide. Normally you can only see the roof over the multiple fences. The photos were taken during the last rebuilding. Helped me notice details locals weren't aware of.
My guide book advised not to ask "why is it rebuilt every 20 years", for about 2500 years… Of course that was asked during the Q&A tonight. The Japanese presenter seemed perplexed. To locals - It just is! But there are interesting theories.

Turned up 20min late to the live streaming. Unlike a Shinkansen… Fortunately, it started 30 min late - waiting for enough people.

Now to soak in a 42C hot bath 🛀
