Damn. Prices just keep going up.
Still remember when i used to buy that chicken royal meal coupon paired with the free survey cheese burger for $3. Must have been at least 5 years ago

    • +15

      I remember 2 Whoppers for $3….

      • +4

        With no voucher required

        • +26

You need a high paying job now in order to eat fast food.

          • @WatchNerd: Don't we all earn $150 to $250k per year? Surely that's enough for one HJ visit per week!

            • +3

@Loopholio: Man, going on this site sometimes makes me feel like I'm beneath peasantry

      • +4

        Pepperidge Farm remembers too…

      • +2

To put it into a bit of perspective, at the time when you could buy 2 whoppers for $3, I was 15 years old earning $5.78 per hour working at HJ's.
I dunno what the teenagers earn there now, but I'm sure it's a lot more than that.

Using wages as an example (for fun), lets say they get paid 4x as much as I did back in the day, $5.78 * 4 = $23.12
Then we grab the price of the 2 whoppers, $3 * 4 = and now you have your $12 for 2 whoppers like we see on the voucher today.

It's a pretty crappy example, because the price of the raw food products would have also increased, not just wages.

        • +1

A 15 year old working in fast food earns $11.69 on a weekday and $14.03 on a weekend. So roughly 2-2.5x what you were earning.

          • @meharly: I'm quite surprised at that, I guess it's closer to $20 for 18 year olds?

            • +1

              @bonezAU: Yeah an 18 year old gets $20.46 weekday & $24.55 weekend

              • -1

@meharly: Bet they don't give them any shifts on weekends at that rate….

If it's anything like when I worked there.

                • -1

@scuderiarmani: they do. i was @ carls jr @ wetherill park. served by a ~15 year old boy who does all the serving.

still $10 an hour saving gives them a cost saving.

                  child labour imho.

      • +2

Late 90s/early 2000s… Use to pick up 4 whoppers with this deal. Mum would have one to herself and my bro and I would have 1.5 whoppers each. Dinner sorted!

These days, my wife and I will need to spend close to $30 for something filling. May as well get something nicer than HJs.

        • +1

Exactly. For $30 it's not worth it.

      • i remeber free whopper if u got a coupon from newpaper

      • -2

        WTF⁉️.. Yeh, 20-30 yrs ago.

    • +22

Remember the free refills? Man they were the days.

      • +3

Didn't cost them much but people started abusing them by refilling cups that weren't to be refilled like the frozen coke ones.

        • I remember when my oldest sister was a Maccas Manager in the mid to late 90s, I worked in one after, she was telling me a Medium cup of coke was 2c to fill….

          • +2

@scuderiarmani: The cost of syrup has gone up quite considerably, and the cost of CO2 has absolutely skyrocketed (insane amounts), and now the paper straws cost much more than plastic.

The cents for a soda fountain drink days did exist but they're long gone.

Don't get me wrong, they're still making money on it, but the cost per cup isn't as cheap as many think it is any more. I'd say they'd only be doubling their money on it, which is pretty standard margining.

The cost of buying cans and bottles of pre-packaged drinks actually makes more sense financially for businesses these days. That's why upstart takeaway shops, and most KFCs do it instead.

      • +1

Are you saying free refills aren't a thing anymore?

        • The free refill machines* Unless you live in a very special place where stores still have them.

          • +3

@Clear: Pretty sure my locals are still free. The machine is accessible to customers. I wouldn't even think twice to question whether they'd retracted that offer as that is their only drawcard.

            • @Guybrush57: we used to go all night movies 3 in row went was in 20s we used to HJ by soft drink and drink rum before 11pm start time Free refill was best.

      • +2

Thank goodness Carl's Jr took over with the free refills

        • Are they any good?

        • +1

Pity no Carls Jr anywhere near me.

          • -1

@ShipShapeRC: They open in battler neighbourhoods where more people are likely to have fast food for their family dinners more often. Predatory tactic in my view.

So I’d say it’s on the whole not a pity there isn’t one near you! Recommended for when you feel like a decent burger that isn’t overpriced hipster stuff but still tastes good.

        • Carls Jr and Taco Bell all have free refills.
Although I had Carl's Jr on the weekend and it was truly vomit worthy IMO and poor value

          • @SimAus007: They've got worse, after having more franchises since having the one up on the Central Coast at Bateau Bay. That was a good one, but even their one has got bad in quality.

      • Yep.. a diabetes killer‼️

    • Still waiting for a dollar regular coffee. That used to be my go to during long drives.

      • Just get your $1.50 one from Shell or 7-Eleven.

  • +22

I used to forgive how average HJ's tasted because of their awesome coupon prices.

Don't think I can justify that for $5 meals anymore… they still taste like $4 meals to me.

    • +1

Seriously wtf do you get for 5 bucks anymore ??

      • +3

        Red Rooster

        • One of the few , yet no drink

    • -1

Have you heard of inflation? Everything is going up, all over the world, we need to adjust and accept this for now, unfortunately.
There are many ways to save money though, which I've been doing a lot of lately.
Cutting back on non essential purchases is the key.

      • The irony is Articfox upvoted & you haven't, lol.

        • -1

No idea what you are talking about. Directed at someone else perhaps?

          • +1

@SimAus007: Arcticfox upvoted, despite having a negative perception of the newly published deals. You didn't, despite attributing the increases to the overall inflation thus having a, seemingly, more positive reaction to the deal posted. Hence WatchNerd comment about the irony.
            That's how I read it.
Why did I jump in to comment on this? No idea. But probably not being in a rush to go to HJ left me enough time for this.

            • -1

@stampella: Why would I upvote it when I mentioned that although due to inflation I understand the price increases, there are better ways to cut back on non essential purchases.
I don't disagree with the price increases because of inflation, however I wouldn't recommend buying HJ (or any fast food) as it's not an essential purchase, again, as I mentioned. Hence no thumbs up.
I cut back on most fast food and make my own from a supermarket, and save much more $$ than any fast food options, and save my health also.
              Nothing "ironic" about it.

              • -1

@SimAus007: why would you view and comment on a post about fast food that you dont buy anyway
                smh

      • Interestingly, OzBargain is one of the best sources for tracking prices of things like Hungry Jacks over time as many of the old deals are still visible!

        Here's some HJs coupons from 2011: https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/61210/6962/hungry_jack…

So the 2x Whoppers deal has doubled in 11-12 years, though the burgers themselves have also gotten smaller in that time. So roughly 120-130% inflation over 11-12 years. It's certainly on the high side

      • +2

If you look at fast food prices around the world. Aussies are the ones paying much more. Inflation is one thing, this is robbery for the shite food. US still has great deals for fast food places, along with Europe and Asia. Not only that but their serving sizes are much bigger for burgers and fries etc. Aussies get taken for a ride with fast food.

        • +1

Unfortunately Aussies don't vote with their wallet. They still pay.

        • US has places that are cheap for food, but it's not the norm now at the big chains, same as here.

          Some examples:

McDonalds did away with their extensive dollar menu over there, and now everything costs about the same converted to AUD, if not a little more after state tax, despite the average wage being much lower over there.

Domino's now costs more in the US than Australia.

Don't even bother stepping foot into a Starbucks over there. We're talking $7 AUD for what we call a large hot drink, and $11 AUD for a large frappuccino and then they ask for a tip on top of that.

It's actually crazy. We got hit here with inflation, but no where near as much as the US did.

        • If you look at fast food prices around the world. Aussies are the ones paying much more.

Of course they are, our wages here in Oz are not far off double that of the UK and other "western" nations. You wouldn't expect our prices to match theirs.

          • @Nom: Burger King and many other chains have many specials constantly. Like 2 whoppers for $5. Plus their sizes are what we used to have years ago. Fast food places are actually made for the poor to afford.

  • +33

Used to be a 4 times a week Hj's visitor, be lucky if i get there 4 times a year now, no value anymore, app offers very poor, and the chips are absolutely shite

    • +2

Same. Used to be my go to for lunch on am shifts, dinner on pm shifts and sometimes late night snacks on night shifts.

Unfortunatly, there is no value in coupons now . Also shake and win has pathetic prizes

      • +9

        5 times a week.

No wonder the forums are talking about an obesity problem.

        • +5

Used to burn over 1000 calories a day just on cardio those days. More with weight training.

These days i aim for 700 calories on cardio because i eat healthy, havent had HJ or junk fast food chains in over a year

          • +5

@easternculture: Yep, don't always assume. I was a bike messenger for a few years and ate an ungodly amount of food during that time and was super fit (well, super fit considering all of the junk I ate and beer I drank).

Pity I'm much fatter now even though I eat far less!

            • +5

@Fappo: Fitness isn't just about weight. You would have a significant luck of micronutrients in your diet.

I can guarantee your bloodwork during that time would not have been great.

There is nothing wrong with eating Hungry Jack's or take out in general. It should be however, in moderation. Once or twice a week is where you see negligible effects on health outcomes.

I love how people try to justify their poor eating choices.

              • @Thatbargainhunter: Bloods were always fine. Ive always tested every 3 to 6 months

Poor eating habits = fast foods 3 to 4 times per day
Eating once daily should be fine , i just chose not to eat any fast foods past year or so

I have my esky in my car full of food and salads these days

                • -1

@easternculture: Haha. If you think it's only unhealthy to have fast food 3 or 4 times per day you are kidding yourself.

Honestly your belief that daily fast food has no health or nutritional implications, well that's about the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard in relation to nutrition

                  • +1

@Thatbargainhunter: Not going to argue with you son

Everyones body metabolism is different. There is many factors: genetics, body composition, level of physical activity , etc

Dont compare my body to yours and vice versa.

                    • -2

                      @easternculture: Don't patronise me.

I'm not talking about metabolism and the ability to process food and avoid obesity. As long as you are not in a calorie surplus, irrespective of what you eat, you will not get obese.

But you can't avoid the fact that it leads to other health implications from the lack of micronutrients, the high fat content and cholatrole and sodium content.

I'm not comparing mine to yours. I'm talking about the basics of nutritional science. Have your head in the sand and justify unhealthy habits. There are certainly unhealthy things I do, but I don't get and justify them as been healthy or not a problem.

It's clear all your basing your view on, is I" didn't become a beached whale eating takeout everyday". That doesn't mean you were healthy.

                      • +1

                        @Thatbargainhunter:

it leads to other health implications

Look son, health implications are also genetically related.

If you have cardiovascular disease, high cholestrol, blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and even mental health disorders etc in your family history, you are more likely to experience the health implications you are refering to.

Not saying that someone who has no family history is not safe, just less likely to have those implications.

            • -1

@Fappo: I try my old job in 2020 as airline gave us new job o my god I am not 18 year old night fill boy any more as 40 year old fat dude. it was hard did for few months still look at staff now feel sorry for them.

          • +1

@easternculture: Yep, this junk food is something I do seldomly now. Perhaps once every 6 months.
Best move I've made. Lost about 10KG just by not eating this shit, great for physical and mental health.

            • @SimAus007: I like it even of how my own mates say that they haven't eaten Macca's in 6 mths, but they end up eating it once every 5-6 weeks. Especially when when I've hung out with those certain friends who've said such. But then also say they haven't eaten HJ's for a few mths, but then eat it once a mth. Makes u laugh.

              • @INDYVADER: What your mates do doesn't reflect what others do. I haven't had Macca's in at least 5 years. Don't miss it the slightest. I used to eat it daily as a teenager. How times change when many of us get older and realise the importance of healthy food choices :)
                Each to their own.

      • +8

I remember when to shake and win actually meant free prizes, now you 'win' a whopper that you get the PRIVILEGE of paying THEM $5 for!

        • +1

Still has some free stuff you can win on there, but best to have multiple accounts of course. Whopper/Bacon Deluxe are still $4 btw. I usually only get Shake n Win to have along with other fast food offers now (like the $1 BBQ Cheeseburger I had tonight to go with 2 Big Macs for $6).

Could previously combine the Shake n Win prizes into a meal with the free chips & drink survey, but they ended the survey a while back.

    • +2

+1 their chip change a couple years back has been a big putoff, they are the worst

      • +21

No way, they used to be a 2nd rate Macca's fries, now they are actually decent.

      • +1

I find it fascinating how many people love their new chips. I think they are like boot-scrapings.

        • +2

Agreed. Their old chips were far better.
I remember being confused when I got the new ones, I had to check and make sure I hadn't accidentally ordered fat chips. What a disappointment.

    • +4

Medium chips for $2 is a disgrace. The packet is tiny and never properly filled. Only get a couple of chips..

      • -1

Then don't buy it and save yourself $2 and your health.
They have a lot over overheads to cover, it's not just the cost of the product itself.
It's like going to a bar and paying $15 for a class of cheap wine and could pour at home for $2, I don't have the overheads they do.

    • I really only go there for coffee. The $2 medium in the app was pretty great considering the next cheapest near me would have been $1.50 from 7-11 for a small. Quality was also far above 7-Eleven.

      • 7 Eleven coffee is atrocious compared to Shell's Coles Express. It depends of where u go to 7 Eleven also. Some 7-11's around are drinkable. But most are terrible.

    • if you think the chips are shite then clearly got tastbuds in ya arse

hj's chips are the best chips 90% of the time of the major fast food joints

  • +21

    Boo, no bacon deluxe deals

    • +1

I love the bacon deluxe , but they seem to be a lot smaller now ? like a jnr burger , but as a work around i just get the 2 whopper deal and add double bacon and cheese and you have 2 huge bacon deluxe's.

      • Yeah, much smaller than several years ago. I still sometimes get the $4 bacon deluxe on Shake n Win as a snack/part meal, particularly if there's no other decent fast food offers at the time.

    • I generally get those for $3, on the 'Shake & Win' app.

      • You mean $4? They're always $4 for me, same as the Whopper.

        • I get it (Bacon deluxe) for $3. Don't know if where u are tho. Maybe it's a $1 cheaper of where I tend to go to.

  • +7

The burgers are better but the deals aren't. Bloody hell.

    • +1

Maccas deals kinda suck now so this is still better than that. Apart from the nugs though because Maccas owns that department

  • Price hike and shit quality!!! nuggets were 5.95$ , now 6.95 …lol

  • +1

Hungry jacks is trash irrespective of price. Wouldn't eat it at even $3 meals.

    • 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

  • +2

Bacon and egg muffin + hash brown for $4.25 is gone. Would often get a free coffee with shake n win for a quick breakfast sometimes.

It's only real drawcard was it was cheap and now it's not even that.

    • +1

I still remember when the hash brown, mcmuffin, and a small coffee was 3.95. So much value.. They've killed it now.

  • -1

I love fast food and no amount of junkfood speak will stop me

just a shame prices are crepting up faster and faster
