    Too soon

  • You will need to pay extra for check in bags.

No check-in luggage! Who flies to London w/o check-in luggage?

      • +1

        Backpackers

    • I tried a few sample bookings and they all said check in luggage is included up to 40kg where did you find that it’s not?

I believe Malaysia airlines doesn't provide full-service. the fare only includes hand luggage. pax requires to pay checked baggage and seat selection. i think they are operating like budget airlines styles now. it's sad to see national carrier operates like this.

    • It depends what class of fare you buy. The cheapest class does not include luggage.

      • lol I only can afford economic class in my life so no idea anything from premium economic and above. By adding the fees with the cheapest class, it will add up with Qantas/SIA to Singapore. I believe most of the full-service airlines will include checked baggage for the price quoted.

        • Malaysian airlines became stingy after COVID and the fares are in line with Singapore air. So, Malaysian airlines is now always my last choice! Without checking luggage, I will rather fly labelled cheap carriers instead and save more.

        • +1

If you looked into it even slightly you would see that there are multiple fares within economy. One is lite, which doesnt include checked luggage. There are other fares that include checked luggage at different amounts.

Malaysia Airlines is full service and the meals they provide in economy are more substantial than Qantas at the moment.

@PCHammond: Yes, for example, Syd-Kul, Lite fare is what OP listed.
+AUD15 for Basic with 20kg, no free seat selection
+AUD115 for Flex with 35kg, free seat selection and other priorities…
I believe other full-service airlines offer 30kg for international routes (correct me if I'm wrong). If adding $115 each way, it will cost almost $1000/pax. Not sure this is ozbargain spirit.
Maybe OP needs to quote that the prices above exclude checked baggage.

            • @dtingy: Syd to Kul on SIA is a one stopper.

Looking at the first date given by OP, via SIA its 1070 with no seat selection, vs 667 as given by OP.

So then it is 5kg more for an additional ~370 with an additional stop each way.

SIA flex is 30kg, and +294 each way. Plus the aforementioned additional stop.

            • @dtingy: I have updated the notes. Thanks for pointing this out

@dtingy is right though…OP has listed them as a "full-service airline", but the quoted prices are not for full service. The fare is significantly higher once you buy a "full-service" ticket.

        • They provide pillow, blanket, meals, drinks and IFE. That's full service.

They also provide a discounted fare that does not include luggage. That's what the OP is listing. As mentioned by dtingy, luggage is $15 each way, which isn't significant. It's not that the airline or fare isn't "full service", it's that it provides a cheaper rate if you do not want to take checked luggage, which a suprising amount of people do!

          • @PCHammond: "A full-service airline typically offers passengers in flight entertainment, checked baggage, meals, beverages and comforts such as blankets and pillows in the ticket price".

My issue isn't that Malaysian offers a 'Lite' fare; my issue is OP states in description full-service for the advertised price. If I'm booking a full-service ticket to LHR from SYD, I'm expecting baggage to be included.

Who isn't taking checked baggage from Aus to Europe for 3+ weeks?

            • +3

@HomebrewFC: OP states it's a full service airline, which it is. And it's not the only full service airline that offers fares without luggage.

OP should definitely state clearly that it may/does not include luggage. But that's on OP, not on MAS.

Backpackers and people visiting family sometimes don't take checked baggage. My MIL travels here so often that she leaves a stash of clothing here so that she doesn't have to bother with checked baggage. There are also a suprising amount of tourists who just do checked baggage.

FWIW, I've flown MAS 4 times in the last few months and found their on board product to be excellent. Staff can be a bit rude though, and more inconsiderate compared to Qantas staff.

              • @PCHammond: On the contrary I find MAS staff to be quite hospitable whereas Qantas ones tend to be more business-like with no warmth in their attitude towards passengers in economy class.

                • @oldrocker: Last flight on MAS, my daughter had bad nappy rash and was very uncomfortable as soon as she pooped (ie: crying loudly)

She needed to be changed and there were the food carts blocking the aisles to go backward. The only toilet with a change table forward was reserved for business class.

Instead of opening that toilet to let my wife change our daughter, they refused and spoke down to her that its for business class only. And then they made her wait until the food carts had finished.

I have witnessed Qantas staff let economy passengers change kids nappies in the business toilet many times. Qantas staff seem alot more caring and reasonable.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I have updated the notes

      • Yes 3 classes of fares, the basic economy fare includes checked luggage for a bit more than the cheapest fare. It's great that they give you the choice!

Not true. I was flying with Malaysian Airlines only a few months ago and the service was top notch.
