Would this be viable as a storage NAS + Plex server? I imagine I would have to get a USB3 HDD enclosure to add some hard drives. Is this CPU good enough to transcode files for Plex?

    • +3

Transcoding 1080p should be fine (this has quicksync), especially if you get PlexPass. I've recently started using Plex and so far have been able to avoid transcoding most of the time. A lot of content direct plays provided your users use the right settings. If you're planning to just use Plex in your own home within the same network, then this PC is more then enough and can direct play 4k with ease.

    • +4

Yes it's good enough to transcode since it will have quick sync.

    • +4

Yes, it has Intel QuickSync, so should be good for Plex & transcoding - as per:
      https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/97121/i…

There won’t be any physical room for additional drives outside of the M2 slot and MAYBE a 2.5” SSD (OP could confirm). So you’ll need either a USB drive(s) or DAS/NAS for storage.

I recently bought an optiplex 7060 with an Intel i5 8500T & 16GB RAM to run Plex & Docker via Ubuntu - all media storage is on my NAS

      • Is it worth getting the 8th gen, it's almost a $100 more.

        • +1

I think 8th gen is a tough sell given the markup - 7th gen is the sweet spot of longevity and price right now.

          • +2

@Kill Joy: Personally think the 8th gen is worth the price gap. Keeping in mind it gets official windows 11 support and two more cpu cores. But it does depend on use case and you’re right it’s a big price jump.

        • +2

          My optiplex was $284 with the 8500T & 16GB RAM & 256GB M2 SSD.

The ‘is it worth it’ question depends entirely on your circumstances..

The upgrade was worth it for me, because I plan to run Ubuntu Server + Docker and some intensive containers, including Plex. But if all you’re doing is the odd local video transcode for Plex for your own house, even the 6500T would suffice from what I understand (unless you need x265 transcoding)

    • +1

As others have said, yes. I have this that has a slower i5-7400T CPU and it transcodes 70 Mbit 4k HDR to 1080p fine. I had 5x 45 Mbit 4K to 1080p transcodes running simultaneously to different devices as a test.

    • I have an m700 with 6400T, 16gb ram and 2x1TB SSDs. The 2.5" drive could be swapped for a higher capacity HDD.

It's an awesome machine if you don't require much storage or redundancy.

I'm running Plex on it. All clients decide x265, so I haven't tried HW decoding.

I also have a file sharing setup along with samba/file browser for easy access.

    • you will need a PlexPass for hardware via QuickSync, but I can confirm that it works well, I had it working reasonably well on a HP G2 800 i7-6500T, but have since upgraded to a i5-12500T Dell Optiplex 7000 Micro (got a massive bargain - not via OzB though - $350 (has 16Gb of ram and a 256Gb NVME with room for another NVME (no 2.5" SATA) and couldn't be happier.

      • How are you connecting your HDDs to the optiplex?

  • Unfortunate that this is USSF since it'll be hard to fix expansion cards and drives.

    • +2

but good to fit unit into tight spaces

    • +2

You can do nvme to ethernet if you want to use it as a router

  • This or

    7040

With btsr20 will bring the 7040 to ~$143

I will be using this for my NAS to run plex server..

Difference is the 7040 comes with wi-fi and win 10(not pro)

    • +2

7th gen has significantly better encode and decode which will really help Plex. I would definitely spend the $22 extra

  • What's the video acceleration / decoding on this gen Intel CPU like? EDIT: Seems to do H264, H265 and VP9 decoding on the GPU which is nice.

  • does this support NVME?

    • +1

Yeah, single NVME slot. Also 1x SATA slot and 1x M.2 A+E Key

    • -2

No it does not, there's no nvme slot. There's an M.2 slot as well as SATA 2.5" slot however.

      • M.2 supports NVMe.

        • +1

Not always m.2 could be sata, but in this generation yes it would be nvme

          • @Sconnery87: I've bought one of these from hybrid hardware. Can confirm the m.2 port supports nvme drives.

The drive I got with mine was an m.2 sata drive but I've since upgraded it with a bigger nvme drive.

  • +9

It's $1.75 cheaper if you have ebay Plus through their listing

    • +7

      True OzBargainer!

  • What specifications are the RAM modules? DDR3 or 4? Single channel or dual channel? What speed?

    • +1

      Should be DDR4

  • Details about the storage please. Is it PCIe NVME or SATA? Is there room to install additional storage and are necessary brackets / screws included?

    • Would like to know as well. I need 5 SATA port to replace my unraid server.

      • Storage specification for OptiPlex 7050 Micro. I think it's 1x M.2 2280 NVMe + 1x 2.5" SATA. 2.5" drive bay looks like screwless design. The entire chase is a little bit more than 1litre in terms of volume so don't expect multiple SATA port and room for additional storage.

        • These are so small they will have a proprietary ribbon cable to SATA & power and 2.5" cage. No chance it has 2x SATA. So if it was not specced with that you would be hard up to find the parts to make it go.

          • @Mechz: It is 1x fixed sata port, not a cable

        • -3

Worth noting it's not an NVMe capable M.2 slot. It is an M.2 SSD slot. Your options are more limited in that regard, NVMe drives will not work in it. Even if it fits (most aren't slotted the same though anyways), it will not work.

          Hope that makes sense?

        • I'm thinking of running a small home file server for me + partner.
Been looking at NAS and they are way too expensive.
If I understand this correctly, the M.2 drive can hold the OS and I can put another 2.5 SATA drive in there for file storage purpose? Would this be a good option for my usage?

    • +2

Note that OP's deal is actually OptiPlex 7050 Micro, not USFF. 9020 USFF in your link is more than 3x the volume to 7050 Micro. While i5-4570 has about the same CPU Mark comparing to i5-7500T, it's TDP is capped at 84W vs 35W.

So get the older 9020 USFF if you don't mind a larger computer that might use more electricity. Bonus DVD drive though.

      • Where do you see Micro? I see it listed as a USFF..

        Dell OptiPlex 7050 USFF i5-7500T @2.70GHz 8GB RAM 128GB SSD No Wi-Fi Adapter Windows 10 Pro

        • +2

There's no such thing as OptiPlex 7050 USFF. It's either Tower, SFF or Micro. Photo & spec suggests that it's an OptiPlex 7050 Micro.

These make a good value Retro gaming system. I run a 7040 Micro with Bigbox (Launchbox) on the TV.

  • how many ram slots? and how many are being used already?

    • it will have 2 sodimm slots, can't tell you how many are being used - you'd need to check with the store

    • Mine arrived on wednesday, 2 slots and 1 used.
They're under the CPU fan air baffle thing which just clips in, quick to remove.

      • I’m waiting for mine to arrive… Did yours come with a SATA disk cage? I’m hoping to run dual SSD’s in it.

        • +1

Yep,came with a SATA M2 drive installed and has a single 2.5" SATA cage: https://i.imgur.com/Cqqx05V.jpg
Theres another M2 slot labelled M.2 WLAN also.

          • @CountDuckula: Fantastic! Looks like mine will arrive tomorrow so I better grab a second drive for it soon
