Can I Buy iPhone 14 from India to Use Here in Australia?

Apple Iphones are manufactured in India.Hence cheaper to buy there. For instance the Iphone 14 Plus 128gb is $1579 here and is available for AUD1361 approximately (based on today's exchnage rate forn INR 78,000). That's a saving of more than $200.
Are there any disadvantages in terms of reception/transmission & warranty?

  • Does your import price include the GST you will have to pay?

    • And possibly duty as well.

I am travelling to India next week. When you buy just one and bring it here for personal use. I dont think there will be a GST? That price includes Indian GST, which I can get back and if required pay here.

Wrong - regardless of the circumstances you will still be liable for GST

How many people walk through an airport with a phone.

No one is going to ask for GST if bought on person, if your not taking the box etc.

          • @Thatbargainhunter: I said "LIABLE for GST"
If you want to take the risk of not declaring the purchase, or denying you have the goods on your person, and run the chance of a penalty then that's your choice.

      • You are liable for GST. How much is Indian GST that you can claim back as a visitor? Ofc you may be able to get away without paying GST, but that would be fraudulent.

        • Against who exactly?
          The government? lols

@EightImmortals: yes. Not sure why committing tax/customs fraud is so funny… am I missing something

        • Google tells me, under the Indian GST law, the rate applicable on mobile phones is 18%. If I get it refunded at the airport then that would be quite a saving. That will be a saving of nearly 30% on Iphone RRP here.

Cheaper if you buy in China and smuggle in your belly. No GST or duty.

The Chinese Iphone versions do not support FaceTime or Wifi Call facility and have other restrictions. Besides, I am not travelling there.

There are five difference models of iPhone 14 (A2649, A2881, A2882, A2883, A2884), but it appears the iPhone 14 models sold in Australia and India are both A2882, so there should be no difference in terms of features or supported bands.

The biggest difference is the warranty.

    • If you purchase an iPhone 14 allocated to the Indian market from an Indian retailer, it will come with a one year international limited warranty provided by Apple. If a manufacturing defect arises and you take it back to Apple anywhere across the world within that one year warranty period, you will be eligible for either a repair or replacement. However, as soon as the one year warranty period ends, if a manufacturing defect arises and you take it back to Apple (even in Australia), Apple will ask you to pay an out-of-warranty fee before they will repair or replace it (unless you can twist Apple’s arm and get them to do a goodwill gesture for you).

    • If you purchase an iPhone 14 allocated to the Australian market from an Australian retailer, it will come with a one year international limited warranty provided by Apple in addition to consumer guarantees under Australian Consumer Law (ACL). Although there is no specific time limit for claiming a remedy from Apple in Australia under ACL, Apple acknowledges they will provide remedies for a defective iPhone two years from the original date of purchase, but they also acknowledge they may provide remedies beyond the two year timeframe.1 Additionally, if you have a defective iPhone replaced by Apple in Australia, the replacement iPhone itself will come with consumer guarantees under ACL, which Apple in Australia interprets to mean that they will provide remedies for any defects on the replacement iPhone for two years from the date the replacement iPhone was issued. However, you can only claim a remedy under ACL when you contact Apple in Australia; for example, if you travelling through India with your 14 month old iPhone 14 that was purchased from an Australian retailer and it suddenly becomes defective, if you contact Apple in India, they will tell you it is out of warranty and you will need to pay for Apple to repair or replace it.

    1. I’ve had an Australian Apple Store replace a defective iPad Pro 26 months from the original date of purchase. It required approval from the store manager, but they were more than happy to provide that approval.

Dude really you saying that you wont be able to score at least a $200 discount (from gift cards) ?

By your price, a 200 discount of 1580 is about 12.65%.

Now tell me you cannot get a 10% apple GC discount or like 15% Jb hifi gift card discount ??

You buying from india will just have worse warranty support too BTW, (WORSE than being stuck with a GC for return IMO, tickets to india or anywhere aint cheap. Even domestic airfare is also almost $200 return nowadays).

Thanks. I am travelling there so I thought I will buy it. But if I can get the 15% Jb hifi gift card discount now then I would rather buy the Iphone here? I can't see these offers now.

That’s because you would need a time machine to access a 15% off deal for gift cards redeemable at JB Hi-Fi. (Those deals only happen once or twice a year around late November or early December.)

If you want a 10% upfront discount gift cards that can be redeemed at JB Hi-Fi, go to Coles and purchase TCN Kids gift cards. The maximum denomination of TCN Kids gift cards sold at Coles is $50, and you can only purchase a maximum of 5 gift cards per transaction, so you will need to visit multiple Coles stores to get enough TCN Kids gift cards to pay for an iPhone 14. You can redeemed multiple TCN gift cards in one instore transaction (and someone once redeemed 81), but please note that if you are going to commit to this route, you should remove the gift cards from packaging and scratch to reveal PINs before you get to the store. Don’t be like a JB Hi-Fi customer recently who seemingly did not do this and annoyed a staff member and other customers in the process….

If you are happy with Everyday Rewards points, go to Woolworths and purchase Ultimate Kids or Ultimate Teens gift cards and make sure to scan the Everyday Rewards card before finalising the transaction. The good news is that Woolworths Supermarkets should stock a variable load denomination for Ultimate Kids and Ultimate Teens, where you can stock any amount between $50 (Kids) / $20 (Teens) and $500, so you won’t need to purchase as many gift cards. Just keep in mind that you can only earn Everyday Rewards points through this deal on one transaction per day; if a staff member insists you have to split gift cards into multiple transactions, insist that you will only get points for one transaction and see how much the staff member will sell to you.

Look I’m classifieds. Easily find 10-15% off JB/TGG gift cards people are selling. Otherwise Colesworth every other month.

No way I’d buy one in India for the sake of $60. Foregoing ACL rights. Plus does that include exchange fees you might have to pay. It’s pretty rare for you to actually get the advertised exchange rate.

  • get the GC here with 10 to 15% off. Buy the phone here before you travel and claim GST back at the airport - saves you another 10%

    • "yes i'm taking this phone overseas and i definitely won't have it with me when i return, most likely in my pocket, in case an automated alert asks one of you to check".
