Was looking for a nice helmet to go with my new Mercedes, and came across the Lumos Kickstart in matching black. Google shows most stockists selling for the RRP of $299 / $199 USD. Credit to deal88 for posting this one in the ebike comment thread.

From electricbikereview.com:

  • A smart bicycle helmet with white, red, and yellow integrated LED lights that will stay solid, flash slowly, or flash quickly to keep you visible when riding
  • Wireless button pad allows you to activate yellow turn signals on the front and back sides of the helmet to help automobiles anticipate your next move
  • Weighs a bit more than non-lighted helmets at ~1.0 lbs and requires regular charging with the included USB dongle, the Lumos website sells replacement parts for reasonable prices, I liked the reflective stickers and strap design, it's fairly water resistant and streamlined

The lower specced Lumos Ultra is also available for $69.95 in red or lime green.

All Amazon stock appears to be M-L size (54-61cm). Good for those with thicc noggins like me.

Don't forget 6.3% cashback on Sports & Outdoors!

    • And? All helmets sold in Australia are up to the National Standard.

        And?

making sure people make an informed purchasing decision.

        • +2

          Okay thank you

This helmet doesn't ship from Amazon Australia. It's a grey import and since it's grey market, it's not "sold in Australia". It is not necessarily up to the National Standard. You're legally required to wear a helmet that's AS/NZS 2063:2008. The deal description for this helmet says:

        Certified: CPSC, F1492, EN1078, AS2063, NTA 8776 E-bike).

So since it says certified AS2063, seems like it should meet the requirement.

MIPS is an upgrade option, costs around $30 US extra on https://international.lumoshelmet.co/products/lumos-kickstar… so that's a bit annoying that the MIPS version doesn't have the discount. The Lumos Kickstart is US$139 delivered with MIPS via the website.

Both Lumos Ultra are with MIPS. only Kickstart is without

      • +1

        thanks…

      • +1

Both without according to the listings

      What's MIPS, precious?

      • +1

        It's in the link darling…

        • +1

Rental scooter helmets are MIPS. Elizabeth St is a good road to ride on at 2am jv. No police or cars.

It's what I've been doing. Completely legal here in VIC.

            Tram tracks are dangerous.

              @jv: They have bike paths.

                • @jv: I can teach you to ride backwards. Alternatively a gas bottle or two cases of beer make a good seat.

                    Nice party trick.

                    • @jv: Come to my place down Bruny island I'll show you what I mean.

                      • @Clear: I wouldn't want you to get arrested.

@jv: There will be no trout involved.

                          • @Clear: i have a few questions but i also think those questions might be best unasked lol

@tdw: Yes possession is highly illegal.

    • +3

The inclusion of "without MIPS" in the title seems like a great way to intentionally come up for people searching for MIPS helmets…

    • +1

good to know thanks. I always buy ones with MIPS

  • What's the actual difference between the kickstart and the ultra versions, other than MIPS and slightly different design?
I can't see any direct specs to compare.

    • The Kickstart appears to have brighter and more visible LEDs and better ventilation.

      • Also kickstart is proprietary connector whereas ultra is usb c

        • +3

          kickstart is proprietary connector

Sounds like a great reason not to buy it

  • +1

    Any XXXXL ?

  • OOS

  • one thing I wouldn't cheap out on is a helmet and I'll always purchase a MIPS helmet.

  • The Lumos Matrix (Without MIPS) is also on sale for $99 https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0B1Q3TGNZ

  • Yeah…. nah.

Spend the money and get a MIPs helmet.

  • They all say currently unavailable?

  • +4

MIPS absolutely worth it, but more than that - a comfortable helmet. That should be the priority over adding features that are better placed on your bike, like lights. If this fits, your head well, this is a decent price for a not too heavy helmet.

Also worth noting using the indicator on the helmet is no substitute for hand signals, per various road rules - and what other road users will be expecting…

  • All gone :(

  • +4

    Anyone mentioned MIPS yet?

    • Nah, don't worry about that…. get the flashly lights and look cool.

  • Needs to be at least 12 BTUs to be trustworthy. This I suspect is no more than 9.

  • I don’t think this is legal for australia..

    • +1

Received mine today - it's labelled with the Australian Standard bike helmet certification.

      • -1

        Guessing you ride solo?

  • -2

Id be laughed out of the bunch and have to ride 20m off the back.
