  • Awesome!

  • Wow! I didn't know this was once $99 before.

I remember that deal. I jumped on it right as it was posted.

    • +1

Best $99 I ever spent. Even at 199 I'd still say get it.

    • +2

how can it be that cheap, makes you wonder what the profit margin is

  • +2

A dumb question, no doubt, but I assume the rear camera can't be mounted on the exterior of the vehicle?

    • No it can't because it needs connecting to the front camera via a wire.

      • Getting a wire in isn't a problem. I was more thinking about dust and water. I assume it's not IP rated.

        • +1

That's what I meant when I mentioned the wire. The camera angle was also not designed to be placed outside, not to mention water, more damage and theft risk. That's not a good idea.

    • +1

      Correct

    • -1

Sure it can! Just be prepared for some rando teenager/young adult to walk away from it and the water in the rain to interfere with vision. Great idea 👏👏👏

  • +1

What are these like to install with the wiring etc?

    • Same question.

    • +7

Have installed two of these into sedans. Pretty straight-forward.
If you want to enable parking mode etc. you need to purchase the separate hard wiring kit that goes into your fuse box. I haven't done this on my installs. I have just gone to the 12V 'cigarette' socket in the cabin.
Running the cable through the top of the windscreen trim, down the passenger side A pillar, down behind passenger side dashboard (I was able to go behind the glove-box on one install as well). If you pull the trim to run the cable behind the clips on the A pillar, remember to run the cable behind the airbag, not in front of it.
For the rear camera cable, keep pulling the trim along roof-line for the passenger side and run it to the rear.
Takes me about 2 hours for a car. Youtube is also your friend.

      • +1

Can I do this kind of stuff If I'm terrible with electric tools and know nothing about cars? Or, could I take the whole camera kit to my mechanic to do it?

        • +4

It really isn't difficult, watch a couple of YouTube videos and purchase a couple of basic tools.

Fuse stops (there are 3 different sizes so check your cars compatibility)
          Fuse tester
          Some pliers
          Tape

As stated above, you will want to get the hardwire kit for parking mode. I would also get the lens filter to reduce glare.

If you run into trouble, you can pm me

          • @padgo: I'd be worried about interfering with the airbags when running cables along pillars etc.

        • +1

Yes, just might take you a bit longer. Eg a professional could probably do it within 1 hour, first go will probably take you 4 hours or more if you count having to go buy the tools etc (ie that's how long it took me 😂)

Probably not a mechanic, either an auto electrician or Airtasker.

    • I have these hardwired for parking

    • +1

Hardwired this version by myself on my previous car (toyota). Took fair bit of time ti route wires through trims or so.

tried to do similar on new car (vw) but getting out the A Pillar was very difficult. So took to an installer. $150 for whole installation.

  • +2

We need more notthecheapest posts! Cheers op

  • Wow, this is cheap.

  • This the version with the non working parking mode?

    • +1

Yeh I think it's this one that can't do the 'buffering' parking mode. I think it can do the others though.

      Maybe another user can confirm.

      • Just need a Hardwire kit to make it work when the car is off

        • Ya for parking mode, same with the other versions, though this one I believe is the one that 'buffered' parking mode was removed as it was causing issues with the unit, so the manufacturer removed the feature. :(

Wondering though, those who have this particular unit, have you had any issues with your car parked and no video recording whereas you would have been ok if the unit had 'buffered' parking mode? Curious if buffered mode is a recommended feature or if other modes do the job well enough.

I've put this model to the side as buffered mode seems like a good feature to have, to catch the leadup to an event/damage rather than just recording when an impact is detected.

          • @Widget: I got one a year ago and although the picture quality is good, everything else is just terrible! It is just another cheap crap dashcam and I don't really understand all the hype around this. I got it for $177 and I think I paid too much for it!
I got this hardwired with the official hardwire kit and by a professional installer but could never get it's parking mode to work the way it should. Initially set it to event detection mode and it overheated so much that I felt like the dashcam itself is going to melt. At some point, the LCD stopped working because of the heat. I contacted their support but they started asking nonsense generic questions which had nothing to do with my issue and I just gave up and stopped following up.
I then switched to 1fps recording for parking mode which solved the overheating issue but now the parking video is useless.
I then tried to connect to wifi using their app and it never worked. I tried a few more times afterwards but after wasting 2 hours on it just gave up.
Finally I tried upgrading the firmware which didn't work as well.
To summarise, I'd suggest that only get it if you want good quality video and don't need the parking mode. But if you want parking mode or Wifi just spend more money and get a dashcam from a better brand.

            • +1

@FreeFrag: Although I haven't encountered the overheating issues, I can second your experience with the WiFi.
The app is a pain in the ass and I can't watch any of the footage streaming via the app. It just never loads and seems like the wifi is running at 0.1 mbps. The only way I can view the footage is to take the microSD card out and plug it into my computer.

  • Only 23 on offer?

  • Random question: Those who have a dash cam and have been in an accident. How important was it for the camera to read the rego plate (particularly in low light) vs just capturing the incident on camera?
Were you ever denied an insurance claim / not at fault or gotten in trouble with the coppers because the number of the other car(s) couldn't be read (too blurry, over-exposaed) ?

    • +1

The insurance company only wants atleast a rego and better the driver detail, which pulls up their car make, colour and model. If you have those details, then no need for it to be clear in the footage.

Dashcam is to prove what happened, in case the other party denies fault.

The only reason you want it to be clear is when it's a hit and run, just so you can review the footage and provide the rego number to enforcement/insurance

    • +1

Have an A119, hit and run at night on the motorway. Video wasn't good enough to get the plate so I was at fault :(

      • Wow :(. I would have thought video footage showing the other guy at fault would been enough :/.

        • Yea it's pretty shit. I also had a witness as well.

          • +1

@atymic: Sounds like a shit insurance company. Mind sharing which one?

  • +1

    100% claimed.

  • Anyone had issues with having it run through the hardwire kit and powering the dashcam directly suddenly not working after several months? Finally got it to work by plugging the power through the GPS mount but not quite sure how that makes it work as opposed to plugging directly into the cam.

    • Probably just the usb port in your camera has died or something?

      • +1

If I take it out of the car and plug it in to the wall through the same port it works. I'm stumped…

        • Then chances are your HW kit is defective

          • @aphexx: But it works in the GPS port they said. 🤷🏻‍♂️

          • @aphexx: Except the HW kit powers fine when routed through the GPS mount shrugs

            • -1

@niyiaw: Then you already eliminated the fault, it's gotta be the USB cable. That can be ordered via Amazon. If all fails you can easily return the cable 😁

  • Perhaps a naïve question, but is it possible to remove a hard-wired dash cam and then re-use it in a different car? I'll be buying a new car in 1.5 years, not sure whether it's a good investment to buy this then have to buy a new one in future for the next car…

    • +1

Don't see why not, unless it is soldered into place.

    • +1

Yes, you absolutely can. Been there and done that. However, after 4 years my viofo isn’t working anymore. It says to “format memory card”- formatted and then tried with a new card, ‘resetted’ - nothing has worked. Perhaps it’s dead lol

      • +1

        Try to update/change firmware

    • +1

It's $200. You'd prob sell the car for more with an installed dash cam and just spend another $200 for the new car.

  • Tbh, I don't have this unit but an earlier version. Had another brand dash cam etc however they don't last long. Maybe it's my bad experience is that these are only designed to last you a couple of years. You rely on it just in case but when I did a random investigation if it is working. It's sporadic. Has anyone had these issues?

    • I have the same issue with the older version. Wife recently had an accident and when I checked the files, they were 2 years old even though it says recording each time we start the car.

      • Obviously it didn't serve its purpose! I spent like $350 on a unit from Dash Cams Australia and after a year, it was stuck in a boot loop with it sparklingly working. Is it worth spending more than $100 on a unit that will eventually die or just update like mobile phones? Tbh, to safeguard, just to buy a new camera every 18 months for like $100 and reuse the TF card.

    • I've had one of these for about 3 years now and it works perfectly. I literally just pulled footage off of the SD card a few days ago.

      • Looks like I got a bad batch.

    • Mine does after 2 years (won't power up, tried all possible ways) Parking mode never worked properly and randomly it wouldn't record. Contemplating replacing the same unit when cheap because wiring is already there.

      • Like many electronics, they've become throw away after warranty.

  • OOS

  • +2

Big fan of Viofo customer service. The rear camera was not working and they sent me a new camera and wire, just paid postage. Had the cameras for 2 years now, with no further issues.

  • Dunno how the waitlist works; was on waitlist, got notified cant place the order. Silly process!

  • +2

Have the original Viofo A129 duo and 2.5 years on and it's still running perfectly. Great units.

  • Bought one of these not too long ago. GPS module was DoA. Customer service were quick to send out another one which was good. But now I have an issue with the rear cam which stops recording (double beep and I lose picture-in-picture on the main unit). Randomly it only ever happens when the car is stopped (such as at traffic lights etc). A few posts on the internet about it, but no solid fix so far. Firmware update did nothing.
I have another Viofo and that's been fine. But seemed to get a dud with my A129 Plus Duo.
