I'm Surprising My Wife with a New Tesla Today. How Should I Reveal The Surprise?

Hi Everyone,

I've bought a Tesla Model 3 for my wife and pick it up today. She is working until 7pm and doesn't know about it. Just trying to figure out what the best way to give it to her is and need some ozbargain wisdom.

Any other ideas are welcome.

I hope your wife isn’t like mine who would give me divorce papers for showing up with a Tesla

    • +57

Mine would book in a lobotomy. And rightfully so.

      • +1

        And rightfully so.

        Why do you say that?

        • -5

Do you have a MAGA cap?

        • -5

Because Teslas are a scam car, produced with low quality qc, and shorter than advertised battery life than its competitors, directly compared by price to what you get; bmw and other manufacturers have more value for money.

Tesla is the camry of the electric car world, not horrible, but don't pretend its a bmw.

          • +2

            @geeteezy: Wow, just wow

          • +2

@geeteezy: I was in Pitt Street mall couple of years ago and they had a Model S on display at the entrance of Sydney tower Westfield.

I got in and saw the leather seats are all peeling off. It’s a car they are showing to public and allowing people to go in and sit. How would they even consider showing off that car? At least lock the doors and hope we don’t see it right?

That really got me thinking they’re upholstery quality vs Mercedes and BMW.

            • +1

@goraygo: It is genuine fake luxury. Also, the manufacturer claims their battery life can reach X distance on 1 full charge, but people testing those numbers never get to the number displayed, essentially they are lying or inflating their battery capacity. Their battery marketing is 100% a scam.

              • +1

@geeteezy: Traditional manufacturers do/did the same. Nothing new.

      • +2

Again? How many lobotomies can one man have?

    • +66

      Or spending/financing $$,$$$ without discussion.

      • +45

We had discussed and she was keen to buy one but I said I wasn't sure (so I could surprise her)

        • +33

Hopefully it is the exact one that she wants, or else…

Most importantly is it the right colour.

Your decision parameters are very likely to be completely different from your wife’s.

Keep us posted okay ? ;)

          • +29

@SF3: only if he lives to tell the tale I guess

            • +5

@Tomcruise: There are more than two colours, and more than zero options.

            • @Tomcruise: Hmmm,
My Model 3 LR is fine. Different but fine. Definately not a 💩 car. Choice of colours = 5, not unlike Polestar and BMW i4, which I cross shopped.
Quality of build is good, changing UI every month is "interesting", a bit like driving a phone.
(for reference: immediately previous car Jaguar, before that BMW)

          • @SF3:

Most importantly is it the right colour.

According to my wife, this is the only parameter that matters in ANY car. A long time ago we had a shit car in a beautiful blue colour, which was a "good car" as my wife recalls it (leaky power steering pressure hose, engine burnt oil, excessive fuel consumption, failed airbag clock spring, engine mount broke, etc.). Then we had a wonderful car that had NO issues whatsoever in the time we owned it, but that car was "just OK" as per my wife as it was just a silver colour one.

        • +18

"discussed" and "keen" are one thing, to actually go through with it is a whole different thing…

We surprised our 6 year old, but I would never even dream of trying to surprise my partner on a spend that big, even after "discussing" and being "keen".. best of luck.

BUT, in saying that I have two options for you - One thought is to leave it in her parking spot, the other is to leave a contact number for yourself on this page, just so that one of us can try to call you tonight to make sure you are OK

          • @mikkaat: You bought your 6 year old a Tesla?

        • +5

I'm also keen to go for a run after work, doesn't mean I want to join a 5K club.

        • +3

Had the same discussion, but after test driving one, she disliked it. Only think she liked about is been roomy and regenerative breaking.

        • Mate, let us know how it goes (whether you get in trouble or not)!

    • Why's that? Due to the cost?

    • Good to know there are others in the same boat as me.

    • Aint about you!

      • Nor is it about you. Keep quiet

    • Thank your wife for good taste.

      • In cars? Yes.

In men? It’s debatable, I’d lean towards arguably not

  • +23

Send a bunch of flowers to her workplace today wrapped up in a Tesla charge cable.

    • +9

Afterwards, this could go in a whole new direction…

      • +5

        Used as a plug?

    • Any Baseus deals, pickup?

  • +41

Drive in nakey into the driveway

    • +1

      Shame it isn't a convertible

    • Pop that Tesla's cherry

      • +1

        Ew, David.

      • +2

        No exhaust pipe.

        • +1

          Or gear shifter

    • Why is the white leather driver's seat all stained and sweaty?

  • +7

Bit of background info… is the tesla a present to make up for something? If so, the less fanfare the better. And if so, c'mon… tell us what you did!

    • +30

if you're buying a Telsa to make up for something, no point in even attempting.. relationship is gone

      • +7

OP might be looking to literally charge up their life, considering he is an accountant. He wants to create an electric moment.

        • Op could see a positive outcome here.

    • +32

No, far less interesting than that. I'm an accountant and the new FBT legislation makes it financially attractive to purchase an electric vehicle. I mentioned to her that it would be a good deal and she was keen to try one but then I just said I have to re-check the numbers before deciding but in reality have gone and bought one.

      • +4

An accountant - so we should assume you haven't paid cash to "buy" it?

        • +4

If you read what he said 'the new FBT legislation' requires a novated lease. It is less cash over the lease term than buying outright.

      • +26

        I'm an accountant

        Then…

Pick her up in the Tesla and take her for dinner

The dinner would be written off as a business expense?

      • +4

Can you expand(with some numbers) on why it is such a good deal?

        • +11

          Salary sacrifice?

          EDIT:
"You do not pay FBT if you provide private use of an electric car that meets all the following conditions"

          • +2

@lunchbox99: At what point is it worth while to upgrsde to a new car?

I have a 10-15k 4x4, is it worth whike buying an 80k telsa model y on finance for FBT benefits?

            • +3

@hothed: Depends what you earn, depends if you were planning to buy a car. Obviously not buying a new car costs less money, irrespective of FBT.

            • @hothed: I've run numbers, a $60k tesla is probably cost comparative with an efficient $40k petrol car based on an approx $70-80k income. Sadly, most novated funders wont lend 60k to someone on 80k

            • @hothed: no. Unless you wanted an EV anyway. There are other cheaper models than $80k. $52k BYD Atto 3 comes to mind.

      • +4

You can ask your wife to go out to dinner, as a date. And say it's a good day, let's not hassle with finding parking. So you'll order an Uber. Someone comes to pick you guys up and you pretend its the Uber. Your wife makes some comments about the car. The driver pulls over and say Please, have a look. And while your wife/yourself is driving the car, you let it slip that this is actually your car.

edit: realised you're from Toowoomba, I don't think there's really a Parking problem there. Not like Sydney or Melbourne.

        • +3

You could just park it a couple of doors down, say the uber is a tesla and they went to the wrong house. Then walk and couple of doors down to find the driverless car and be like, where has the driver gone, and its unlocked via the proximity key and all that bizzo.

          • @sillyhead: Actually that would be funny.
Hey honey, I think its a robo-cab, it came here to pick us up without a driver. Lets check it out. How about we drive it there, and resume command back to Elon afterwards?

      • Can you share the benefits of the FBT break and a novated lease of buying & owning vs. (as a business owner) As a non-accountant I found it difficult to see the advantages?

        • +4

As an accountant I have to start by saying each persons situation is different and you should seek personalised financial advice that takes into account your individual circumstances and the following is general in nature. With that out of the way…

If you own a business you may be able to purchase an electric vehicle and claim an immediate deduction as well as claim the GST on the purchase and any running costs. If this vehicle is used for personal use then no FBT is payable so you effectively get to pay for a vehicle out of pre-tax income. Assuming a marginal tax rate of 30% it effectively brings down the after tax cost of the car to around $43k and running costs are also reduced by your marginal rate.

As an employee if your employer offers novated leases you could obtain an electric vehicle and have all running costs paid out of your pre-tax income and again no FBT is payable. The savings over a similar priced petrol vehicle are going to be significant (FBT on a $68k car is $9k per year).

Of course if your main goal is to save money then your probably best to just buy an older small petrol car but if you want a new car I think the FBT legislation makes going electric a great option at the moment.

      • You can purchase one for my wife too please, it will be doubly financially attractive to purchase two electric vehicles.

    Weird flex, but ok

    • +14

If aren't an under 30 earning $250k+ professional you need to reassess your life mate.

      • -3

Was actually in this position < 30; earning $250k+, then family came along; and I dropped down to $160k because I found myself stressing way too much about work; couldn't burn the candle both sides - family numero uno. 30 next week FML.
Taking the paycut is 110% worth it… (to date)… pending inflationary figures…
I'd also love me a tesla or other EV - but, will stick with the old car for now; because driving once a week (WFH) petrol isn't going to recoup the costs for quite some time! OP's wife is a lucky girl, and they're both doing better than us!
My wife would be on the "Why would you spend that much money?" side of the surprise - even I would be, if I were the recipient!

        • +35

Thanks for the blog update; is there any way to subscribe to more?

I'm surprised your wife can get a word in.

        • What were you doing at < 30 for that money?

And what did you change jobs to?

        • That's nothing I used to earn $10M while I was under 10. Then I settled for a lesser (undisclosed amount) as it was 10M% worth it.

    69 person flash mob

    • +23

To clarify… is that the number of people, or what the people are doing?

      • +11

Why not both? Old El Paso girl.gif

        • +12

          Why not both?

          Uneven numbers?

          • @Lord Fart Bucket: Hasn’t stopped anyone before

          • @Lord Fart Bucket:

            Why not both?

            Uneven numbers?

Well, one set would have to perform a "70"… which is a 69 as someone else watches…

          • @Lord Fart Bucket: It's 69 so 68 people can do it and one person records

          • @Lord Fart Bucket: Well if they are referring to “69” as the position the people are in, then we don’t really know how many people are there to perform the action. So how do we know there is an odd number of people?

            • @digitalbath: Because the question was literally "is it 69 people, or people doing a 69" and the answer was "why not both?"

@pwnd: That’s how OP should surprise the wife. Just hand her the obnoxious number plate and then wait for the penny to drop.
