Just also saw Umart with the Kingston 2TB NV2 M.2 NVMe SSD for $185 as well!

  • Would this work in this: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/749066 ?

    • No, no nvme in the description

    • unfortunately it won't

    • You would want to find a SATA m.2 not NVMe

      • Or for secondary storage you can use a usb 3.1 -> M.2 NVME enclosure.

        • That too, if you wanted to hang it outside the system.

        • Thank you. Didn't even think of that - I have one lying around actually.

      • Thanks.

  • which would be better for game storage this or nv2?

    • +3

doesnt matter for game drive, you won't be able to tell a difference

    • +1

      NV2 2TB: QLC, 640TBW durability, 3 year warranty
      CS2140 2TB: TLC, 1200TBW durability, 5 year warranty

No idea about the sustained write speed of CS2140, but the NV2 2 TB sustained write is awful

      • +7

None of this matters for game storage.

On the NV2 you have to write over 88GB at full speed to run into the sustained write limit - which means even if you had a gigantic 120GB game update, the dramatically slower speed of your internet connection would allow plenty of time for the drive to keep up and even with this large theoretical 120GB sustained write, you still wouldn't hit the slowdown limit.

What's more, there's enough durability there to do this 120GB game update every single day for over 14 years (640000GB / 120GB = 5333 days of 120GB writes.)

For "normal use" the durability and sustained write speeds aren't important. I don't know why they get mentioned so often 🤷‍♂️

        • +2

For NV2, It looks like the entire cache is dynamic cache, so as you fill up the drive with games, your sustained write limit gets lower and lower.

I think the warranty itself is probably worth the extra $10.

        • I don't know why they get mentioned so often 🤷‍♂️

For the enormous thud your epeen makes when dropped on the bench or in forums!

        • +1

If you copy data from another drive, it may be painfully slow. Even when you have to do it once, it's worth an extra $10 for a better drive.

It's also possible the durability is not absolute, and the QLC drive would have a slightly higher chance to fail even well before reaching the stated durability figures (due to 2x higher density of the charge levels, the cells are less reliable compared to TLC and have to rely more on errors correction).

        • Read speed for me is much more important. Anything to reduce time wasted while Photoshop loads, computer games saves load, new levels/areas load. There is considerable variation in synthetic benchmark read speeds, but I suspect there isn't much difference in real world loading waiting times.

Edit: I just found this article about game load speeds: https://www.techspot.com/review/2116-storage-speed-game-load…
Basically, SSDs are 50% faster than fast mechanical HDDs. M2 SSDs are 5% faster than SATA SSDs. There is very little difference between M2 SSDs on game loading speed (Firecuda and WD Black tended to be at the top of each test).

"PCIe 4.0 vs 3.0 provides essentially no benefit in most cases, especially compared to a top-end PCIe 3.0 drive. QLC memory is not slower than TLC for reading game files. Having a DRAM cache is also not important for game loading. The only specification that has some influence is whether the SSD is SATA or PCIe, with SATA being slightly slower, but beyond that, other specs are rather meaningless for gaming."

      • WOW that chart, didn't realise so many nvme drives couldn't hack it.

        • Copying 100GB plus, all in one go, from another fast SSD in the same machine, is pretty niche for "normal users" - I've got lots of SSDs in lots of different computers, doing all sorts of things, and it's not a limitation I run into.

100GB is a lot of data - even when you're dealing with large 4K movie downloads, you can happily move them between SSDs with no issue because the files are usually under 30GB. As per post above, even the biggest game updates rarely get up to the 100GB range, and their speed is already dramatically limited by your internet connection.

In short, unless you have some gigantic write heavy workloads, it's just not something you need to worry about 👌

        • Huh. Makes more sense given 1TB is 400TBW - No idea why some of the review sites are higher. That is relatively poor for a TLC drive then.

Team Group MP33 2TB, DRAM-less but does not matter for game drive

  • Is this for desktops or laptops, sorry new to this~!

Any which supports M2 SSD. This is universal format.

  • Compatible with an x570-E mobo?

    • Almost certainly… but check your mobo user guide (or the m.2 options in your bios) to be sure. Want to see something like m.2 2280 PCIe 3.0 or 4.0 support.

I am looking to add storage to PS5. Any one purchase this Ssd? If not what would you recommend?

      Google is your friend 🙂

Wanted personal experience’s from members here. Lots of different prices for brand and capacity. Also use full to know at what price point.

        • -3

Personal experience is subjective, biased, and personal opinion based. If you want to feel satisfied with your own purchase, you should spend time doing your own research first and find out options before asking which is best. Not everyone here has memorised and will quote you read write speeds, etc. Factors vary depending on budget.

          • +7

@thousandsuns: With all respect…..i dont have to tell you if i have done my research. I am here to ask if anyone has experience to share. If you cannot really help dont comment. Im not here to look for a teacher even on budget. Im on this forum to be part of a community and if anyone has their experience that i can consider from.

Just buy the cheapest compatible drive that you can. You won't notice any difference between the fastest and slowest Gen4 drives in a PS5 👍

  • I think its gen 3 because gen 4s don't go under 5000mbps.

    • Nope, just the limitation of the controller

    • Actually no, someone here posted that some Gen4s are even slower than this and weirdly enough the PS5 accepts them because it sees Gen4.

So basically the chips are "too slow" for the PCIe level. They could wack much faster chips on.

  • cheap but why gen 4 slower than gen 3?

  • anyone know how this compares to the p3 plus for a boot drive?

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Crucial-CT2000P3SSD8-PCIe-NAND-350…

Looks liek faster speeds, similarish price? any downside?

  • How come a gen4 drive has gen3 speeds?

    • Memory speed. Controller capable, memory can't

  • I paid 350$ for this over a year ago. Defs a bargain at this price.

  • this compared to samsung 970 evo plus?

  • Back in Stock - just ordered
