Pretty good price for 3TB version only. I got this for PC external HDD backup - I just did a quick format before using it, works fine as PC back-up drive.

    w/ game pass

FYI, it can't be used to extend an existing subscription. It's a 2 month trial for new members only.

    Eeep mechanical HDD

    • Do you seriously think its going to be a 3tb ssd for $99? What a silly comment

      • -1

        That's not what I said.

It sure does look fancy. But just alluding this is slow as and there are other options available.

  • Can I use it as a time machine drive for mac?

    • +1

It's just a basic external HDD, so it'll work fine once formatted yeah. There are better value options though.

    • If you just want a Time Machine backup, and you have 1TB or less in your Mac, the. I’d recommend one of the smaller external SSDs. They’re more expensive per TB (about $100 for a 1TB one), but are a lot smaller and faster, so you’re probably more inclined to use it.

  • Can I use it as a normal external hard drive for data? I am not a gamer!

    • +2

      Yes. There's a 5tb at Officeworks too…

  • +9

This is an awful deal - $33/Tb?

Since this is a 2.5" drive as well it'll inevitably suffer from slow speeds as well.

    • -1

How can you compare portable external to normal $/Tb?

      • +2

For reference a 3.5" external drive is usually $25/Tb RRP. Good deals are $23/Tb or less.

But deals like this one were under $27/Tb, if you really need a portable drive, and you're willing to risk data loss from moving a mechanical drive around, and the slow speeds.

I'd rather pay for better value per Tb, or better reliability/speeds for a portable SSD (even though they are more expensive/Tb). These 2.5" drives are the worst of both worlds.

        • +1

I agree, they aren't good value, but they serve a different purpose, not requiring a power point is a huge plus for some, let alone the size.

        • +1

These 2.5" drives are the worst of both worlds.

With the popularity of small form factor case, 2.5" is the go to drive for storage after using a m.2 for the OS.

          • @PuppieWayne: Not really. Even mini ITX boards commonly have 2x m.2 slots and any extra storage can be supplied by SATA 2.5" SSDs. There really isn't a point to 2.5" mechanical drives anymore and they're increasingly rare in the PC world. They're more portable sure, but more prone to breakdown when transported.

          • -2

@PuppieWayne: If you're using an SFF PC then you have a powerpoint available so an external 3.5" drive makes more sense.

Heck, even an Optiplex 9010 has an internal 3.5" bay

            • +2

@Switchblade88: Building a SFF PC only to plonk an externally powered drive next to it defeats the purpose of going SFF in my view.

              • @Lodan:

Building a SFF PC only to plonk an externally powered USB powered WD Black drive next to it defeats the purpose of going SFF

                FTFY

2.5" drives aren't necessarily slower, the old WD Raptors used to all be 2.5" drives because the smaller platter size means it can be faster (making a 10,000rpm 3.5" drive is hard).

Sadly though this drive is crap. WD Black used to mean premium drives, this is just a slow drive in a black case. Better off with the $99 4TB deals that pop up all the time, as you said.

      • They did have 15,000rpm 3.5” drives available but they needed a SCSI or SAS interface to reduce the high CPU usage that would happen through an IDE interface.
They were expensive, ran hotter than 7200rpm and mainly used in the corporate sector. They also no longer compete with SSD on price, performance or power consumption.

        • Those were actually 2.5" (well, 2.6") platters but due to all the other hardware requirements they were in a 3.5" body size. Again, it reduced seek time.

          • @freefall101: Hold on, not only did you make a factual mistake about Raptors being 2.5", but you also contradicted your own point afterwards? Impressive.

            • @Switchblade88: Way to not understand what's going on.

(Raptors were 2.5")[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Digital_Raptor]. There were 15,000rpm drives but those were Seagate cheetah's and they were only in the 3.5" format because it's a standardised size, but they technically weren't 3.5" drives (because they weren't 3.5" platters).

Your comment is still as wrong as you originally posted it, 2.5" drives aren't necessarily slower. They should be faster because the seek time is faster, thus why Raptors were generally 2.5" and generally the fastest consumer drive around.

              • @freefall101: So, in summary:

                • Raptors aren't portable drives, and cannot be powered via USB
                • Raptors aren't a drop-in 2.5" replacement, since they have to use the heatsink and are 15mm thick
                • Raptors averaged 120mb/s, which is not fast, and certainly not a bragging point nowadays
                • Raptors have not been made in 15 years
                • Raptors are not a comparable product to any other consumer-grade 2.5" drive. Including the listing above.

I'm sure they were good tech at the time, but by 2023 purchasing standards it's a pretty irrelevant datapoint. Any modern 3.5" drive will still be faster than any 2.5" drive, as per my original comment.

  • Fast enough to play modern PC games off given it's not an SSD?

    • No. No chance. If the USB 1.1 isn't a typo then it's not even fast enough to play XBOX One games off.

Typically, a low capacity sd card in a reader that reports the 16tb capacity.

Anything written beyond the sd card's size is gone forever.

      • There's YT videos on them.

Ars also did an article on it a couple of weeks ago. Seems Amazon is just Too Big to Care.

          • @Jabba the Hutt: Yeah, I think that's the case. There's a tonne of rubbish products on there which is why I never touch 3rd party sellers unless their clearly known elsewhere.

      • Even a real drive is at its base a box of sand.

Who was the mug who just posted the deal for these ffs

  • With game pass?

  • The Game Pass included is for new subscribers only.

  • USB 1.1?

That would have a transfer rate 3TB in about 1 week.

  • Other than the free game pass (new subscribers only) I don't see any value in this product, unless you're dead set on getting the Xbox branding. There are 3.5" external drives with much better pricing and noise profile, or 2.5" SATA SSD with an enclosure that you can actually play games off.

    • +2

or 2.5" SATA SSD with an enclosure that you can actually play games off

Any games the SSD will run will also run off this drive. You’ll just have slower read times which in most cases outside of loading shouldn’t be highly problematic given the drives going to be equivalent performance to what a Xbox One or PS 4 console would have internally anyhow, if we’re talking about use with a console.

The only games this won’t run are PS5 and Series X native titles, but those also aren’t supported on any external SSD either.

  • I got the 4tb version a few months ago, works well for its purpose (media playback drive).

    • Tempted to get this to upgrade my ps4 to 3TB
