  • also $10 at woolies i brought a bag last night. good value

  • packed in nitrogen, to minimise oxidisation ……

damn I wonder how old these beans are

  • Is this better than Lazio beans from Aldi? They went up in price and I can't find 500g bags anymore.

Lazio beans used to be roasted in Melbourne (what I heard), it still says it's roasted in Australia, which makes those beans travel less than Lavazza's, right?

Or perhaps it doesn't even matter, because both are stale as anyway?

    • +1

yes, it;s usually a quick trip from roaster in Australia to shelf, Vittoria is less than 2 weeks from roast to supermarket shelf, I rang and asked, would imagine Aldi similar as neither roaster or Aldi wants to store stuff, costs money and uses space. The Lavazza beans are packed in nitrogen to minimise oxidisation as they are imported from Italy.

      • +1

but Lazzio from Aldi is $14.99 per kg, this is 500g.

        • +2

Aldi is cheaper for dark, medium is a bit more, and Brazil is a bit more still. I think Brazil is best.

          • +1

@AustriaBargain: I’m drinking Brazil from Aldi but some said Dark was the best!

            • @wtfnodeal: I found dark was too dark. But it didn't taste any different to the popular supermarket brand of dark beans.

            • @wtfnodeal: I always buy dark after sampling all 3 at Aldi. I recommend buying all to try and see which you prefer

          • @AustriaBargain: Yep, the Brazil one from Aldi is my pick and better value than this given it:s 1KG.
I actually prefer the Brazil one over Lavazza, but that's just my view (not based on price but flavour).
The Aldi one is roasted in Melbourne and doesn't sit in the stores for too long either.

Coles has 1kg bags tomorrow for $19

    • link?

    • Thanks mate! Will visit coles tomorrow and save $1.

      • It would have been cheaper through Amazon rather than Coles with S&S ($18)

        • Crap, returning them back to coles to buy via Amazon

  • +2

How long ago were these roasted?

    • +8

      Country of Origin: Italy

That's a minimum 20 hrs flight, so not yesterday.

    • And I've just received my 500 grams.

      The expiry date is 30/5/24.

In the first sentence on the back Lavazza say they've been on the market since 1895, but in the last it's 1956 (really, wtf), so I wouldn't even bother to ask them when they roasted those beans.

  • I find depth of roast a big influencer of flavour, have tried lavazza, Vittoria, local roaster, haven't tried aldi, all taste different with depth of roast being the big influencer, so it's not just lavazza, it's which one of their roasts, same with Vittoria, which one do you preffer.

  • ETA March - better to go to Coles tomorrow

    • Mine says Thursday

      • +2 for Thursday 9th

      • I'm in Perth. Thursday must be east coast

    • Ordered after you and it’s coming tomorrow.

  • I will try them, if I don't like it I'll give to my friend

  • Is this instant coffee?

  • +2

Meh. Imported from Italy… Stale on arrival. Large carbon footprint. Italian roast.

Just buy Australian roasted. Worth it for the freshness, even the cheapest supermarket beans.

Imported Italian roasted beans are never any good. Just too old once they've got through the supply chain. It's not a bargain if it tastes bad.

With all due respect, you sound quite pompous.

You also make some assumptions as if they were fact. For example, I can assure you that this coffee does not taste bad.

      • +6

He's right about the roasting date though… and he is EspressoDan

      • +1

Old coffee tastes bad. That's fact.

      • I can assure you that this coffee does not taste bad.

        That's an opinion.

        • -3

Indeed it is. Just like your opinion.

    • Can you recommend some Australian roasted brands / suppliers?

      • There's a few regulars on ozbargain. Just use the search and U will see them

      • I have ordered from pretty much all the roasters on Ozb but ended up sticking with Sacred grounds breezy blend from WWorths ($14 per 500g when on special). It has a roasting date (averaging 3 weeks) and has the least acidity out of any coffee that I have tried.

      • Espressology :) (NSW) - Not associated

  • +1

Well I guess since Aldi has nothing on the shelf I'll give Oro a go..

  • I've tried these before on sale from woolies. Definitely a bit stale but they are fairly strong (3.5 or greater out of 5) in taste so its not a big deal. They are perfect if you just need coffee to add into food like tiramisu.

  • Personally, can't go beat fresh beans, I have been going to Brown Bag Coffee (very affordable in my opinion).
Aldi is my go to, when I have ran out of beans and awaiting a delivery.

I don't think this is that great of a deal, given Aldi is around $15 a kg, and this is only for 500g,

  • On a side note, if anyone is in the campbelltown nsw area and wants a free bag of Aldi dark roast beans feel free to pick them up. Too dark tasting for me
