I have these from last year and can confirm they're more than capable for around the house, and decent build quality. I was happy with the price point.

    • +5

I bought these years ago after someone here said that they were good quality, nope, snapped the terminal scredriver almost straight away.

      • +1

mine have been fine - year old

      • Yeah I was going to say… bought these last year and they are rubbish. YMMV I guess

      • +3

They will bend and snap, that's a fact.
If they bend or snap even a cheap driver, you are over torquing the fastener. Also a fact.
If you are terminating copper wire, and bending or snapping the tip of your driver, you will be reducing the longevity of the termination by crushing the conductor strands.

Less likely with solid, single strand cables but it's going to cause a weak point and the conductor will either break or not carry the rated current

Once you've fitted the electrical component after terminating the connection, it's been bent.
This mens heat fatigue, broken conductors and eventually arcing under load, fire and doing the job again.
There's a few ways around this but a compromised strand of copper wire is a ticking time bomb over time .

So basically if you buy this your whole family will die in a fiery inferno? Thought so;)

        • +2

This, and stop trying to use a terminal driver on screws that need a 6mm+ flatty.

      • you probably don't know how to use tools properly

        • Perhaps they don't, but that experience sounds similar to mine. About 1mm of each corner of one of the flat blade screwdrivers sheared off when removing a stiff screw. They're very brittle. I swapped to another OzBargain/Bunnings favourite of the resin handled B&D screwdrivers. Even with a spanner on the handle for the required extra torque, the cheapy B&D had no problem.

          • @banana365: Not sure if you are joking. very dry humor.

            • @ripprind: Serious. The "spanner on the screwdriver" trick is an old one and pretty commonly used before impact drivers became widespread.

              • @banana365: Yes , I'm aware of that trick, some spanners even have a special design to accommodate that.
But electrical 🪛 are not designed for the work that these heavy duty ones are for.
I think thats what the above comment about not using the tools right meant.

Its like if you bend your chefs knife doing carpentry and blame it on poor quality of the former.

yeah, but they were selling for $12.99 in aug 2022

  • +1

nice! i hope they are selling the vde pliers/cutter as well like in previous years

    • Potentially a typo in the ad as the second picture shows the insulated pliers

      • yeah, previously the vde side cutters and pliers were $9.99 each

        • +1

          Mmm sous vide cutlets

    • Judging by the pictures they are as well

When it comes to Aldi, VDE stands for Very Dodgy Equipment.

I'll stick with what Richmond Tigers wrote

          • @R4: I’ve never seen them used on site in my profession. But I can say personally that they are often mentioned. If you’re going to destroy a tool, anything is landfill… The VDE rating is proven and never has any relationship to with the qualities of the material it surrounds.

If you want a knock through screwdriver, chisel or are applying excessive torque on terminals, you shouldn’t be working anywhere near live circuits, let alone encroaching safe approach distances as an untrained, unsupervised individual.

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/craftright-6-piece-insulated-vde…

Save yourself $3 and get this set from Bunnings.

You will never use the Voltage tester and this 6 pack of drivers is what I use as a professional. No need for anything more.

    • +1

Heaps of sparkies I know use these. Not much to worry about if you lose one or someone nicks one.

    • Can recommend this set

    • +1

Huh I remember returning a set of Craftright spanners to Bunnings when one of them broke in half after one use. The person really did not want to refund me because it's Craftright, saying 'A tradie should know what Craftright is for.' I was definitely not a tradie, but a very confused DIYer. Luckily I didn't have to go back to that Bunnings, never bought anything Craftright since either.

      • +2

        Should be renamed - Craftwrong.

        • Or Craftwong.

      • +1

Im not a tradie but I know what craftright is for… landfill

Im not a garbologist but I know what your comments are for

I think a sub 70 IQ is now a requirement for employment at Bunnings. Recently one of the red-shirted morons tried to tell me that returning a battery would void the warranty on the other items on the invoice (some associated to the battery, others not). When I pointed out the flagrant & egregious breach of consumer law they were attempting I received a blank look as if to ask "what's ACL?".

        • I just work here.

Oh wow I thought it's only a regional thing where there isn't enough people to hire so everything goes.

I had been told by someone at my local Bunnings that they do not accept complaints some time ago, I then had to call the headquarters to clarify about making complaints. They called back, apologised and all… Not sure what happened to the person at the checkout.

To be fair, unless you frequent Whirlpool or this site, ACL isn't as commonly known irl. For me it's really because of random failing gadgets that had led me to ACL (and ACCC). Those who purchase random gadgets are probably already tech-savvy and have access to instant collaboration online so it skews the curve even further. Having access to the internet is not the same as having access to a community.

          • @frugalftw: I would have thought that in the retail trade, in a setting that sees a lot of refunds, they would be at least informed that in certain cases, despite what the box says, the customer is entitled to a refund. Anyway, it doesn't happen a lot but it really opened my eyes as to how ignorant so many of their staff are. They usually know nothing of the location of products, let alone which is the right one for the job, so DYOR & don't rely on indifferent minimum wage milennials or Gen Z.

    • Real deal is in the comments. Will be as good as (probably same factory) as the Aldi ones, available year round.

    • Came to recommend same set, have given to industrial electricians without complaint.

Note electrical screwdrivers not so good for general use, in that the prying is not recommended.

  • do electricians wear orange or yellow shirts?

    • Yes.

  • Would like to buy this but have lost count at the number of screwdriver sets have bought in the last year.

    • +1

I bought 4 sets of these about 6 years ago. Insulation is still intact, handles, tips and all. Why? Because my brother in law needs to borrow a screwdriver so often and destroys tools and fasteners. I say, ‘buy cheap, buy twice’ but a pair of my work socks cost more than this set
