Looking to build a gravel/touring bike with drop bars, and after a bit of thought comparing to Shimano/SRAM the Advent X seems to be offering quite good value, given the prices from wiggle. The main appealing points for me is that the rear derailleur is a clutch RD and capable of supporting up to 48T. To get a similar offering (for drops + off road rear mech) its either GRX, Shimano road + hacks, or SRAM - with the brifters alone costing more than the full set.

Microshift cable pull ratios are not compatible with Shimano/SRAM so you will need to get the shifters & RD together.

Downsides? it is only 10 speed, and cable brakes only for brifters, but value for product wise I think its punching above its weight and has good reviews (https://www.bikeperfect.com/reviews/microshift-advent-x-drop…)

The component picks are:

microSHIFT Advent X M100A Dual Control Lever Set $96
microSHIFT Advent X RD-M6205 10 Speed Rear Derailleur $64
microSHIFT Advent X H104 10 Speed Cassette $27

Or the G104 cassette thats 100g lighter for $54

If you want to go flat bar shifters, it is only $19

  • nice bundle

    • TL;DR: where's the bargain?

      • +1

Well I actually pulled the trigger when the RD was $109, so now its down to $64.

Also other .au retailers (MTBDirect, etc) sell this set with the trigger shifter at closer to ~$300. Cyclestation sells the shifters alone at $249.

Wiggle has a 365 day change of mind return policy as well

I was thinking… Microsoft are selling what?

  • +2

what frame are you putting it on?

    • I've got 2 candidates - one is the Triban RC520 that I got around 2yrs back (and might sell the 105 shifter + RD that came with it for more $ than it cost to buy this). The other one is (experimentally) a 2010s 26inch Focus MTB with disc that I got off FB mkt for $50 - theory is it gives me the widest tyres I can get, and 26inch MTBs are totally forgotten by the world. But I will need to source cable-actuated disc brakes (maybe Avid BB7s)

  • If I put this (with trigger shifter) on an old MTB, would I need to lose the FD?

    • +2

Not sure - someone on reddit did ask this (https://www.reddit.com/r/bikewrench/comments/qwnaya/is_adven…)

But the main consideration of going 2x would be RD total teeth capacity, and having 2x up front takes up some of that quota. The groupset itself is designed as a 1X, and it would be fairly cheap to replace the front with a narrow-wide chainring for the front & 11-48T gives me quite enough range for my build.

  • did you compare with sensah options?

    • +1

Sensah is pretty trashy from my experience, I'd go Microshift, that way, you can always upgrade the levers to an every level Shimano and they're fully compatible

      • +1

Description says "Microshift cable pull ratios are not compatible with Shimano/SRAM"

    • I had a look at the Sensah road options, didn't know they have a gravel groupset (SRX). But a lack of reviews, and even aliexpress is selling the shifter + RD for $200+ , the microshift looks to be a better deal.
