Rex is a full service (checked luggage, carry on luggage, refreshments) airline, flying mostly 737-800NGs on these one way routes (Ex Virgin planes).

They're running a promo where their midweek fares are less, so I've gone through some 2023 dates to find the cheapest flights on all their routes. Hopefully it helps someone!

On some of the dates, Jetstar or Virgin may show up cheaper if applicable (eg $40 on way on some of the routes with Jetstar), but Rex does include checked luggage and refreshments, while Jetstar and usually Virgin now charge for checked luggage (on their Lite fares). All include carry-on luggage.

For a full hyperlinked list of routes, dates and prices, see the original post here

There are hotels on sale as well, don't forget to book yours.

Anyone know if Rex do biggie planes now?

  • +2

    Melbourne to Perth?

    • +2

Rex don't have any interstate routes to Perth

  • +8

Been flying rex exclusively between syd -> brisbane since late last year. twice a week

no complaints at all. and a far sharper price than virgin - maybe 30% cheaper or more / qantas - usually half or more cheaper

If all you want is a flight and dont care about status, points or lounge - then rex is for you

    • Its interesting - most of the dates I travel for work, when I book in advance (generally my work year is booked in Feb/Mar due to DSC) | Economy fares are cheaper with QF than on Rex

      • +2

I have been picking up fares between $89 and $110 most of the time.

  • No MEL/OOL?

  • -3

How do we know if these tickets are for planes with fan or normal engine like 787 !

Scare the hell out of me If they are running on normal fans engine!

    • +16

They use replicas of the Wright brothers plane. Byo goggles to deal with the bugs

    • +1

Just click on the flight and it'll expand and tell you the plane

      eg: https://imgur.com/a/nyZCFiS

    • They are called turboprops and jets

      • +3

If we want to be pedantic it's turboprop and turbofan.

        • Well yes you are right. But not what people commonly use. Turboprop and jet engine is what people commonly use to describe the two types of engines.

          • +1

            @Thatbargainhunter:

Turboprop and jet engine is what people commonly use to describe the two types of engines.

Still no. I've never heard any regular person use the word 'Turboprop'. For the man on the street it's 'propellers' or 'jets'.

            • -1

@1st-Amendment: Well you are wrong mate.

Go to a booking engine (ie. Webjet) and where it displays the aircraft type.

a Dash-8 or an ATR will be labelled as a Turbo/Prop

While a jet will be classified as a narrow body, (A320 series, 737) wide body (777/787) or jumbo (a380)

This infighting between Qantas and REX is having some great flow on effects.

Why is Crown Towers in Melbourne booked out all the time now? I'm looking to stay for a week on a bunch of dates and it's sold out on every one? It used to be easy to book in up until about 10 years ago when I stayed there all the time. Now it's impossible to find any rooms. Is there another site I should be using?

  • -1

So first it said Brisbane - Sydney $76.
I go to buy the ticket and it says ~$86. Ok… weird but whatever.
When I am paying it says your ticket price is now $92.59? What in the false advertising

    • +6

We're just an aggregator - the sites publish their prices, but also fluctuate rapidly, and we collect and display them. There might only be 1 at $76 on a certain day, and given the traffic, might have been sold since my post. Sites also cache prices for performance, and as a result it isn't always super-live/accurate. Do the best we can!

Ok thanks for explaining I wasn't aware.
Also not sure how to get rid of this neg

Head to the "votes" tab up top, it can be revoked from in there…

They add on 10 to 15 dollars when it comes to booking after checking prices for the tickets happened with both go to gate as well as 9ther sites. I booked anyway thanks OP

  • Why is the upgrade bid process oversea? I have been hit by international transaction charges?

  • Anyone know if Rex is planning to fly to Hobart?

  • Based on this post, found VA MEL>ADL flights @ $99 each way (Choice).
Sure, slightly more expensive than the Rex flights, but when you consider Virgin's service, lounge, frequent flyer program, and bigger choice of flights, it's worth the extra.

  • I think Rex has the best free on-board snacks. Some full-service airline doesn't give out a free snack and no in-flight magazine.

The 737 is the most crashed plane in aviation history.

On a recent rex flight from Melbourne to Adelaide during take off and landing the turbulence was so poorly handled that the plane almost flipped on it's side. It's a miracle that plane landed.

For some background, I'm a person who travels all over the world multiple times a year. I have never experienced anything like that flight.

    • -1

The most delivered commercial aircraft in the world has had the most accidents.

      I'm shocked I tell you.

Also it almost flipped on it's side during both the takeoff AND the landing. My god, are you ok? Did you contact the Herald Sun or Today Tonight?

      • -1

The A320 range is superior in every regard and is fast overtaking the 737.

I dont care for your sarcasm. This was a serious incident of incompetent piloting.

        • Yes yes because pilots can see turbulence coming and react to that. Not that, perhaps, the turbulence and winds were causing the death defying circus tricks you experienced.

A fun stat also - The hull loss rates (per million flight hours) of the 737NG (-600, -700. -800, -900) is lower than the A320. Sure when you add in all the classics it gets worse, but that's what happens when things are continually getting safer.

          • -1

@deva5610: The pilot attempted a steep 180 degree turn in the middle of harsh turbulence at low altitude immediately after take off. It was negligence at best.

In regard to your stat that's only because the a320 gets crashed frequently by meth smoking Indonesian pilots who have the safety training of an ape.

It's not about seeing the turbulence. It's about reacting to it correctly.

            • -1

@ben5000: Wow. Well you're so incredibly wrong, racist and ill informed it's not funny.

You sit back in the cheap seats and let the professionals stick to what they're good at, hey?

Pro tip - Nothing wrong with making a turn during some bumps.

              • -1

@deva5610: There couldn't be a worse time to make a turn. My dad is a pilot.

This particular pilot wasn't a professional, I'd say he was a trainee. I'm speaking from the position of authority here, with thousands of flying hours. You on the other hand are a broke, uneducated fool who is arguing for the sake of it to shield your fragile ego.

You've lost the argument in a dismal failure and embarrassment. Take what little dignity you have left and try to make something of your pathetic life.

                • @ben5000: You can speak with as much authority as you want from the economy cabin.

The fact is - you're wrong.

  • Family booking (4 people, inc 2 kids)
Based on https://www.rex.com.au/FlightInfo/BaggageAllowance.aspx can anyone with family confirm if I read this well based on their previous experience?

    Checked Baggage
We'll pay for 4 seats (kids >2yo), we therefore have 4 checked-ing luggage:
    1. We'll be able to check-in two car seats, one foldable pram, + one big luggage (4 items). Extra checked-in luggage would be charged, right?

    Carry-On Baggage
    2. Has anyone previously taken onboard a foldable Yoyo with Rex? (Big airlines Qantas, Qatar, Singapore Airlines, Jetstar have no issues with his but not sure about Rex)

    Thank you!

    • Once I flew REX from to Sydney to Byron with fully disassembled bikes as checked-in luggage. They arrived in one piece — and we rail-rode them from Byron to Caboolture! — but not without rolling eyes and "I don't know; we'll see if it fits" from staff.

  • @beatthatflight, would Sunshine Coast be profitable enough a market to include in your posts, in addition to the Gold Coast?

    • +1

On some posts, sure! However, in this post for example, Rex doesn't fly to/from the Sunshine Coast, as far as I'm aware?
