Yeah, PS5 pro will be out before I think it's worth upgrading the storage in my PS5 😅

      • I found quite a few people online, reporting crashes in PS5 games, with NVME - particularly with GT7.

Some of the drives WERE correct rating too (!) so I am hoping, it's a cooling issue or they need even faster spec than Sony has advised.
        https://www.tweaktown.com/news/71340/understanding-the-ps5s-…

The internal SSD from Sony I believe is 5500, however, the internal SSD also supports some kind of fancy compression that NVME doesn't.
Initial speculation before NVMe mode was added, that 3'rd party may need to max out full 7000 to keep up with the internal.

So I dunno, I want a drive but I want to be sure it's reliable (and not $550 for 2TB either)

        • +3

likely a cooling issue or fault. so far no games I am aware of come close to needing the speed.

        • +3

No, it's easy to get mixed up. Heat is an issue normally with heavy writes. Just reads generally don't have heat related issue for PCIe Gen 4 SSDs.

Hardware decompression is done on GPU or CPU. With that, compressed data is loaded from SSD either to RAM or VRAM.

PS5's internal SSD has a fair bit of marketing hype (it has SN530 type of NAND but a custom controller that is kind of like PCIe gen 4 x4). While it has 6 priority levels, GT7 is unlikely to use that feature (it is a cross gen title). The main issue is SSD latency is still too high. Game developers are unwilling to use that over RAM. If current SSDs are so amazing, why don't we get 4GB RAM machines and use SSD as RAM replacement?

        • An ssd wouldn't overheat from just gaming and even if it did it wouldn't be causing crashes from thermal throttling itself. Games being buggy has been the norm for awhile.

          • @JerraJones: Multiple users confirming this issue, advised that once the games were copied back to regular ssd internal, no more crashes

            • @hamwhisperer: It's 99% more likely to be an issue specific to that game, 'multiple users' also doesn't mean much considering even 'wide spread' self reported stuff like rtx 4xxx series cables melting were affecting less than 0.05% of people. It'd be a software issue not hardware issue, DigitalFoundry even ran tests on ssds that didn't meet the 'requirements' posed by Sony.

        • Cooling/incorrect fitment of 3rd party heatsinks.

      PCIe3 drive I believe

Better off going 980 pro for $30 more for double the performance.

People in that thread are saying that the WD850X is a better deal?

      • +5

They are both good drives, just make sure 980 pro firmware is up to date if you purchase.

    • +1

      Thank you

This is correct. This drive should and if I recall correctly has been cheaper. It’s pcie 3.0, 2 gens old

      • +2

Bit of a stretch to call it 2 gens old before any pcie 5.0 drives are on shelves.

        • -3

Its obviously 2 gens old, the speed of the pcie bus has nothing to do with generations.

there is 980 pro and 990 pro.

This drive should and if I recall correctly has been cheaper.

The cheapest price registed on OzB is $241.57 before this post.

thsnks OP, but anyone knows if samsung australia honors the stocks like this in terms of warranty?

    • +1

They do not. They'll only honor it if its purchased from a retailer here in AU.

      • good to know and thanks Devastator0

can't believe I paid 350 for 1TB, how time flies

  • -1

I'd avoid Samsung SSDs, especially the 970 EVO. See horror stories here:

A mate and I got (profanity) by silent failures (reporting ok in CrystalDiskInfo) with our Samsung SSDs recently.

    • my 2tb 970 Evo plus is going fine so far for the system I built in December

      • +2

        It's been 3 months….

        • -1

Almost like I said "so far" and I was aware of when I built the system.

          • +2

@Willy Beamish: I think blighst's point is that you're experience is so short it's meaningless, but some users will see that comment and use it to disregard idonotknowwhy's comment showing a larger sample of users having major issues.

Yes, you did highlight that it was built in December, but if you acknowledge that your experience is so short, why comment at all? It's like saying you should invest in crypto because you bought yesterday and it went up, ignoring the history or the impending doom of the SEC.

      • +1

Ours were still fine after 3 months as well ;)

    • i've been running a 970evo since july 2020 without any dramas

they're on countless "best SSDs" lists and are solid performers. just because you, your mate and a few others online have had them fail - doesn't mean they're bad, just means they have a failure rate like every other SSD.

if you dont recommend samsung, where do you go?

      • Yeah have had this SSD for over a year and I haven't had any problems.

    • Can anyone authenticate this guy's comments? I've got like five 970 Evo drives, do I need a firmware update?

  • +4

Bought the 2TB evo plus in 2019 - still going well. Didn't feel a need to upgrade from that.

    • same.

  • +1

    i almost spent 400 on this when it came out ;_;

  • +2

This is cheap. I bought a slightly used one from another OzBargainer recently for only $20 less and to me that was a great price.

I don’t get the warnings and complaints. I Dont think it’s as widespread as people online make it seem.

I thought this was meant to be a decent nvme. You could do much worse right?
