Got these in December for $389 brand new from the good guys commercial

    • Do I need to own a business to get access to good guy commercial?

      • +1

No, but you need to be a part of an organization that has access, eg customer of Rest superannuation.

          Great, thanks!

Can confirm also picked up 2 pairs at end of last year @ $389 ea brand new via tggc.

Apparently there is a loophole where you elect to pay at store and can then pay with further discounted gift cards for extra saving.
If you pay via the payment portal you can't use gc's.

    • tree fiddy when JB had a pricing error

So many refurbs must be a ton of warranty returns

    • +1

yeah a bit weird that this new model is already being returned by customers :/

      • +1

I had xm3 and xm4, both returned, the xm4 lasted a month and getting a refund was like extracting teeth.

Heaps selling on marketplace too, tested one in JB not that solid build.

      • Heaps selling on marketplace too

prob a bunch of them from ozbargainers who jumped on the $350 deal last year from FOMO

must be a ton of warranty returns

You make it sound like they are faulty returns. But with Sony that's unlikely.

Most likely the reason for return and refund of XM5 is the fact the earpads are shallower in depth and also smaller in overall internal size compared to XM4's making them either "stuffy" for normal to larger sized ears or just plain uncomfortable because they squish/put pressure on the users ears.

The problem I have with these headphones are that Sony doesn't sell OEM ear pads. So when the ones this comes with inevitable fall apart, you have to either send it to Sony to get them replaced for a lot of money or resort to 3rd party ones and DIY which will ruin noise cancelling. I have a pair of XM3s that I bought 3 years ago and I'm going through this issue right now.

Just thought anyone purchasing this would want to know this before buying a pair.

    • In the same boat with my now-approaching 4-year old XM3's - any ideas on what to do?

  • According to DHRME Soundcore Space Q45 (on sale for 1 more day at $164.99 $̶2̶1̶9̶.̶9̶9̶) beat this with EQ

  • Picked these up in the last deal. I also own the in-ear XM4s. I gotta say that the XM4s are much more comfortable (with silicone tips, as I couldn't handle the foam tips) and have comparable sound quality. So if you listen to a range of things i.e. not just music, and don't need large headphones or higher level noise cancelling, then consider XM4s.

Agreed. I have the over-ear WH-XM4 and I couldn't stand the heat in summer, even on an air conditioned bus. The in-ear WF-XM4 is much more practical. I use the headphone only at home now.

I have bought the WH-XB910N from FB marketplace, got so impressed with it that I bought another last week. So 2 XB910N for $125 each in near new condition.

The bass is amazing in it!

      in it!

innit. "The bass is amazing innit!".

HODL. This price should be for new headphones, not refurbed.

Just a question? Do you guys think it's successful design?
As for me: old design was much better. and looks like I will stay with my WH-1000XM4 for a long time…

    • Backwards design I think.

    • +1

      old design was much better.

They are for different markets. XM5 is an "upmarket" design for competing and bridging the gap between XM4 and premium headphones such as Airpods Max/Beoplay etc.
If you look at overall performance and tech XM5 is not much different from the XM4 other than appearance/design, they just made the XM5 "less plasticky" with stylish thin metallic headband that connects the earcups etc.

The only "new" feature I know the XM5 has is the "ANC calibration" (which is also on XM4) is done automatically every time you turn the headphones on, so they will adjust ANC strength based on surroundings which means they are more ideal for multiple environments such as in your home/walking outdoors/at work/bus/train/plane. This suggests XM5 is also more of a "lifestyle" product. While the XM4 was more designed for commuting comfort and ANC (XM4 is the gold standard of aeroplane travel ANC headphones).
There are also physical differences too that hint towards these differences. XM4 has larger and deeper earpads for better comfort in the long term and to fit more ear sizes. The XM4 also folds twice into a compact form to fit inside it's compact carry case, ideal for travellers.

The confusing thing Sony decided was to name them the XM5's. IMO something like ZM5 would have been a more suitable name.
