  • isn't the power supply for these 110V ?

    • Anybody got one can comment on the 110v?

    • Something that I've always wondered about WD TV Live: Can I stream TV channels from the internet using it so I can display those channels on the TV?

For e.g., would I be able to stream these channels on this sites on my tv using WD TV Live?: http://www.wherever.tv/tv-channels/House-of-Parliament.jsf

      • +1

It can technically stream, but its very limited and you can't actually tell it you want to stream websites etc.

        • thanks

    • Different models.

    • +1

thats the old model doesn't have wifi like this one

    • That is not the wifi model, good deal op.

Just FYI for anyone researching this device. Keep in mind alternatives are $200+.

Its very good value for money for what you get, however it can be very slow and buggy at times.

Network shares can be glitchy requiring a device reset etc, media server appears to be very stable though.

The media downloader for artwork and info for your videos will slow the device to a crawl and make videos laggy, you have to wait the 10-100 minutes for it to finish before you can watch.

Apps such as ABC i-view are insanely slow and crashes often.

USB connectivity is insanely slow, 8-10 MB/s where a computer would give you 27 MB/s.

This makes backing up content on the WDTV impossible if you have a lot of data, I get 90-115 MB/s on my HTPC as I took the main hdd's out of the case and put them inside the case.

Basically I found the device not suitable for my needs and built a computer running XBMC and found it 100x better.

I'm a hardcore user who wants things running perfectly so keep in mind that many people will be happy with the WDTV Live. I have 8TB of data with that 8TB backed up via separate 2TB USB Hard drives.

(I've used three of these before so its not just my device that has problems)

built a computer running XBMC and found it 100x better.

depends what you use it for… for home, i still use my reliable popcorn hour, but when i travel, i always take the WDTV with me and a passport drive with all the kids movies on it…

    • Did you try Netflix by chance? I want a decent netflix player.

    • iview ?? really I didn't know this came with iview… or are you talking about the old version with hacked firmware?

      • It does, it came in an official firmware update. There have been two firmware updates since then without improving i-view so at the moment its slow and buggy but works if you are patient.

        • Thanks, I haven't run mine for ages (didn't like it renaming files on my network share - incorrectly also I might add) so I'll update it and check it out .. though it doesn't sound any better then the iview player in my Samsung TV which is painful to navigate (infrared remote is slow to input and search) and has a lot of buffer / restart issues.

Actually for those reading this I noticed yesterday the iOS app for iView was updated to run on iphone but form the reviews and my experience it also has a lot of buffering/restart issues… sigh maybe it's not the devices but iviews servers / software.

    • Good review. I particularly agree with your networking comment.
I also have a large server (12tb), so consider myself a power user. Here's why I prefer the WDTV Live,
      - tiny, ultra quiet, low power consumption
      - easy to use
      - b-rad firmware eliminates network glitch
      - plays everything
      - very easy to setup and maintain
      - cheap

Now XBMC is huge and bulky compared to a WDTV live, it's very noisy (unless you pay a premium for quiet components), it is not as easy to setup XBMC, XBMC is an electricity guzzler compared to the WDTV Live.

Note: I don't use my WDTV Live for backing up (it's a player), nor do I use USB.

      So I would say
XBMC is perfect for maximum flexibility
WDTV Live is perfect for electricity/space/noise/it just works conscious users

WTF??? You can even put XBMC on a $35 Raspberry Pi…I'd hardly call that paying a premium or guzzling power. Not to mention the Android XBMC port for smartphones & tablets…

      • +2

There is no b-rad firmware for this model

      • +2

Err, you clearly have no idea what your talking about.

        1. AMD E-350 Fusion for low power consumption if you don't need power like I do or raspberry Pi for even lower power consumption and noise as StewBalls said.

        2. XBMC is EASIER to use

        3. You can't put firmware on the WDTV Live steaming lol!

        4. WDTV Live does not play everything

        5. yes easy to setup

        6. Yes cheap.

If you buy the right hardware it will be very quiet, you obviously just don't know what your doing.

  • Ordered one.

    jv has kids!
    mind blown.

    • Maybe he likes watching kids movies?

  • oh no! i just got back from jb hifi with wdtv live for $84. What are the main differences? I see hdmi 1.3 vs 1.4. What difference would this make? Might have to return it tomorrow.

    • Your $84 one, only using Cable network to connect, This one can connect wirelessly

      • no I've got the same ,but I'm using a belkin wifi(got it from msy-5$)dongle.it works well, & yes, I can stream 1080p from my pc too

    • I'm pretty sure there are many differences, I haven't used the old wdtv so I couldn't tell you which ones.

      • User Interface is much nicer on the newer unit. Newer unit also has WIFI.
Not that bigger deal, they both work. Slightly better user experience on newer model :)

  • Btw they have WD My Book Live 2tb for $169 which i think is $30 cheaper than anywhere else plus another $5 off if you ask for a deal.

  • Excellent

  • Awesome price, made my first amazon order without a hitch.

    Thanks OP :-)

  • On the amazon website, it shows an image of the box contents with a 110v socket. Not an Australian plug.

In no way can i recommend WD Media players. My brother got 1 a years or so a go. Payed 150 for it and it really was not great. Could not stretch the screen, some codecs didn't work all the time. The file layout was awful.
Not sure if firmware updates have fixed problems, all i can tell you is how i experienced it my self.

I do recommend the ASTONE AP-110D V2 only problem is the player is,it can get hot.
But it does and plays ''everything'' and has user firmware updates. plus it's like $70

PS After my brother witnessed what my Media player could do. he went and bought my 1

I'm considering one of these or a Boxee Box.

Users will be my 60 yo Mum and Dad.

I'll load movies onto a HDD or USB to give to them.

I have a Boxee. Although with some of the latest updates the UI isn't as snappy as it first was, it's still great.

Ease of use is the priorty, good remote, nice UI. I'm about to go Google this new WD Live UI.

    $90 vs $190.

What do you think would be the best choice?

    • I got this one for my parents last christmas. If you are willing to put the series/movies onto the device it's really straightforward. My dad is really bad a technology and he figured it out after a while.

I also have the older model for myself, with network cable + usb only.

The UI on the new model is much nicer, and it has a much better remote. Other than that they are pretty similar. For $90 its a good deal I think your parents will like it.

As a heads up this type of deal was on OzB back a few months and everyone was pricematching to officeworks (with various amounts of fussing about depending on the staff).

As a reference, I just happened to get another one from Officeworks yesterday by getting them to pricematch amazon again. They pricematched for 95 bucks.

  • This is probably the wrong place to ask this but what's the difference between this and a built in wireless blu ray player such as the sony BDP S-590 which can stream similar content..?

    • At the most casual of glances, the sony is approx 200, while the WD is 100.

    • +2

I think the Sony BDP S590 may have Cinavia copy protection. That means that a lot of the movies you download may not play in the future…

Anyway, JB Hi-Fi have the Sony BD S590 for $158, so if you need a Blu-Ray player then it might be worth considering.

      • Thanks..! but dang bought that Sony 3 weeks ago for $180 after much negotiating

  • +2

imo the old one with brads firmware is more useful.

  • Bought one of these a few weeks ago to test out.
Very disappointed. Streaming any file of 800mb wireless was impossible, Buffering constantly.
Channels are very limited but ok.

If you want a device to stream wirelessly from you pc dont get this one as I had major buffering issues.

I bought an A.C Ryan one as well and that worked flawlessly.

BTW bought WD from Office works for $110

Saying that though been the US model Id be interested to see if Hulu and netflix will work.
As the Australian model does not support these US channels

    • You need a VPN for Netflix/Hulu

    • australian model don't have the DRM capable processor like the US ones

    • We run two of these off our wireless to the media server, our largest files would be 4Gb+ and they work no problems…

  • … plus a US address and US credit card for Hulu Plus, but there are ways around that.

    • Yeah ive already got Hulu plus and netflix. All working on my Roku and PC

  • Not sure it's a great deal tbh. There have been deals in the past where you can buy Australian stock for a little bit more. That way, if it breaks, you can take it back… and you won't need to buy an adapter plug for it either (assuming it doesn't come with one).

Not a neg because that doesn't meet the guidelines for a neg vote. But not a positive either

    • +1

Yeah WOW did these for $98 in their catalogue last Chrismas. Yes the new one, not the non-wifi old model!

  • *deleted

  • Hey, does anyone know if this has dual band wireless or only 2.4ghz?

  • Would officeworks pricematch this? I know its not australian stock but it seems like people have pricematched the same product from amazon with OW in previous posts.

    • See my first post above.

      • +1

Your post would be more helpful if you provided, store location and/or copy of a receipt.

        • Location was the Mosman NSW store. From what I recall of when this deal came up a few months ago, people's luck was pretty hit and miss depending on which store they went to.

As for a receipt, their store policy is not to take scanned or photocopied receipts so that part won't help. If I can find the original deal however, there were a few people who uploaded their receipts.

  • Just went to the officeworks in Fairy Meadow & refused to price match as amazon isnt an australian store :(

Also the price on amazon is now $100 including delivery to Aus

    • Price on Amazon, incl delivery to Melbourne: AUD 89.84,

  • Oliver, it would greatly help us if you could upload the receipt so we can try to get a pricematch

    • +3

Hi guys check out these older threads. I believe people uploaded their receipts but as I said, officeworks policy is to not accept scanned or photocopied receipts.

If you're having trouble, do what I did and ring up in advance, ask to speak to the manager and get them to price match over the phone.

Please note that for people who come up against the "we won't pricematch amazon because it's not australian" can refer them to their own price match guarantee. It doesn't state anything about being limited to australian stores. It even includes online stores as long as you take delivery into account.

"What items are excluded from the LPG?

Non identical products and services (inclusive of non identical warranties)
Package deals i.e. printer and computer bundles
      Cash back offers
      Resellers
      Customer special orders
      Contract Pricing

      What about online stores?

Identical products are price matched against online stores but as with any other kind of store, the item must be currently in stock. When price matching online stores we also take into account the added cost of delivery. If the identical product can be purchased and delivered via an online store for a total price lower than the one we are offering, we will beat that total price by 5%."

      http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/content/Lowest-price-gu…

For links to the older threads about this deal please see these two links. I recall them containing peoples uploaded receipts:

  • Does the Aus version allow you to load netflix and hulu apps on it or do you simply get what ever is preloaded?

    • Only what is preloaded, although perhaps netflix/hulu magically pop up if you connect from a US ip?

  • WD is not offering warranty for AUS buyers from AMAZON (when I registered the product the status was OUT OF REGION)

Also the need of an adaptor for the plug

  • Could someone tell me how this is better than just simply streaming videos from Windows Media Player to Blu Ray via dlna?

  • Got mine today. Quick delivery

  • Managed to get OW to price match. WIN!
I did have a receipt from another OW price match tho, obtained from WP.
